I may have yet another stupid question... If I were to instantiate a Comm object from a Kernel (not from a Widget), and open the connection, how do I connect some Javascript on the notebook client side to that Comm channel?
Essentially I want to create a communication between kernel and browser, global to the kernel, and acting on DOM objects in the browser, without using a widget.

You would need to register a callback for a comm target
For widgets, this is ipython.widget, I believe.
You register a constructor for a particular string, which gets called when comm_open arrives.
