I'm going to take that as a "no" even if you guys are sleeping, and go ahead.

Juste que je n'ai pas suivi ce qui s'est passé sur le repo dernièrement - donc pas la meilleure personne pour répondre.

Is there a clean way to test whether a package in running from a development installation?

Is there anything else anyone thinks we should do for a 4.1.1 bugfix release of IPython?

Don't think so. Hit it!
I think installation issues warrant immediate patch release, ~anything else can wait to be accumulated over a week or so.

When installing ipython dev branch with pip install -e, it ends with "Successfully installed ipython-4.0.3".
When uninstalling ipython with pip uninstall ipython, it ends with "Successfully uninstalled ipython-4.2.0.dev0"

That's a pip bug, doesn't have anything to do with us.
Do you use conda?

not for dev installs

I mean is it a conda Python that you are using with pip?

that is right

A story of distutils vs setuptools:

  • when setup.py uses setuptools.setup
    • pip install uses the MANIFEST.infile
    • but python setup.py install ignores it
  • when setup.py uses distutils.core.setup
    • both pip install and python setup.py install see the manifest file .

I thought MANIFEST.in was only used for sdists, not any install...

these files are headers for the distutils command install_headers. It is also possible that python setup.py installignores is while pip install does not. (when using setuptools)
