when I save a notebook to .ipynb in ipython, the file comes out a json in my local drive. How do I export .ipynb? I appreciate any pointers.

which version of IPython are you using? And which browser?
when I choose 'file -> download as -> IPython Notebook (.ipynb)' it opens a new tab and eventually my browser will start downloading an .ipynb file

I do it exactly the same way you described but it always exports a json instead.

the thing it, an .ipynb is in fact just a json file
but the file should have a '.ipynb' file extension
is Safari saving it as a '.json' file or something?

That’s right. Safari is saving a json. When I push to github, I get a json format and not the ipython notebook format

if you manually change the file extension to '.ipynb', does it work then? (just trying to home in on the bug)

Solved it. In the edit mode in github, simply get rid of the .json extension and you get a beautiful iPython interface.
Thanks a lot @wmvanvliet

it's still sort of a bug though. Maybe someone has an idea why Safari would append the .json suffix to the file

The server may be reporting the mimetype as json, and Safari
