There are a few issues with gitter that are causing some people to want to move away. One is that the chat:repo mapping doesn't fit well for Jupyter's many-repo structure (this is addressable with dedicated rooms). Another is that chat is ephemeral, and we would like to encourage more discussion (especially help and dev decisions, where search-index discovery is valuable) to happen somewhere that Google searches, etc. will find.

Another is simply a software problem - that the gitter apps are proving unreliable (lost messages, messages delivered to the wrong room, etc.)

%%javascript
require.undef('hello');

define('hello', ["jupyter-js-widgets"], function(widgets) {

    var HelloView = widgets.DOMWidgetView.extend({

        render: function() {
            this.value_changed();
            this.model.on('change:value', this.value_changed, this);
        },

        value_changed: function() {
            this.$el.text(this.model.get('value'));
        },
    });

    return {
        HelloView : HelloView
    };
});
class HelloWidget(widgets.DOMWidget):
    _view_name = Unicode('HelloView').tag(sync=True)
    _view_module = Unicode('hello').tag(sync=True)
    value = Unicode('Hello World!').tag(sync=True)

@remram44 I've seen this on multiple users over the past couple of weeks. Not a user mistake - gitter says you are typing in one room, but sends messages to another.

We definitely don't blame gitter for users writing in the wrong room; That's always going to happen.

That was a very well timed failure illustrating @minrk 's point. :clap: gitter
