asyncio is only in Python 3, so it wouldn't be available in Python 2 even if the same version of ipykernel worked on Python 2

Well, there is trollius.
But I guess thats really out of your scope, beacuse your kernel already works in python 2

And the async/await syntax support that's new in the latest betas is really Python 3 syntax that doesn't work at all on Python 2, so it's not a feature that really makes sense on Python 2.

You can already use trollius, etc. just fine in a Python 2 kernel. But you have to use Python 2 syntax to do it.

I think that I will just reimplement the base kernel
every other avarage kernel does that anyway
