For the functionality, it really depends on your workflow. I tend to use the MATLAB-like "cell mode" a lot. I split up a script using ## and pressing CTRL+Enter to execute the current cell is nice.
The GUI is indeed unfortunate, but console jupyter currently doesn't have decent support for output from other clients. Since it blocks on awaiting input, you have to press Enter to update the REPL to show output from other clients, plus it's not syntax highlighted. There's a PR to fix the blocking issue (jupyter/jupyter_console#133) but it appears not to have priority at the moment.

The only reason I use qtconsole is because of the better output from other clients functionality. If you don't use it, I don't think there's any reason not to use the console version.
