Hey guys, a bit tangential to this board but I'm having some trouble uploading backpack firmware to a pro-mini using an FTDI232
definitely was working with these specific chips and boards in the past, any thoughts?
Sasha Sklar
@sashasklar
nm, counterfeit pro-mini, pins flipped
ajfisher
@ajfisher
Ahh that's no good @sashasklar - glad it got sorted though
Sasha Sklar
@sashasklar
I did find a quasi-bug in the keypad backpack firmware though, pin 8 is used for the i2c address and second column: https://github.com/rwaldron/johnny-five/blob/master/firmwares/keypad_3x4_i2c_nano_backpack.ino. You're deprecating that stuff in favor of interchange right?
Rick Waldron
@rwaldron
@sashasklar the firmware was written for nano, not mini :\
those are definitely different
Specifically, there is code that allows for setting the I2C address via hardware

You're deprecating that stuff in favor of interchange right?

Uh. I don’t know know anything about that.

Oh, that’s a bug there
The wrong pins are set for A0 and A1
will fix
one sec
@sashasklar fixed.

Planning on pushing an update over next day or so ahead of nodebots day - hopefully can have people do some testing. At the moment main focus is to bring all the packages back up to line with current upstreams and then deal with any bugs.
Would be awesome if there's any backpacks we want to knock over to get them integrated into interchange as well
to make it easy for peeps to install
ajfisher
@ajfisher
@/all If anyone has the available time to do a couple of quick tests with just straight up standard firmata install via interchange that would be much appreciated. I've just updated deps which forced a few little refactors but should be fine but eyeballs = great at this point.
Derek Wheelden
@frxnz
@ajfisher I can give it a go in an hour or so
ajfisher
@ajfisher
Awesomesauce :)
Derek Wheelden
@frxnz
Branch or master?
ajfisher
@ajfisher
I've pushed it back across to master
Derek Wheelden
@frxnz
Ok. I'll report back once I can get to a computer
ajfisher
@ajfisher
Sweet - thanks chief!
ajfisher
@ajfisher
@frxnz a change just went up so make sure you're using latest version on master at this point. I just added ability to install from a git branch (to help my updating all the other interchange related projects!!)
so you can now do this: interchange install git+https://github.com/ajfisher/interchange-firmata#depUpdates0.3 -a ... -p ... for example and it will pull the appropriate files from the branch you specify (will use master as per normal if you don't do anything)
by implication that statement means you can also try out latest StandardFirmata from my branch as well as I've now got that built too ;P
Jérôme Loï
@gorhgorh
i can test that later tonight (+4h from now on)
ajfisher
@ajfisher
That would be ace @gorhgorh - I'm heading to bed now but let me know if there's any issues and I'll knock them over tomorrow. Now Robotnik is in a good place I'm doing a bunch of updates across the interchange related stuff to make sure they are all up to date etc and ready for NBD and will then get onto NodePixel bits
Derek Wheelden
@frxnz
@ajfisher Ok I'm on a real computer now. Updating everything
Derek Wheelden
@frxnz
Everything seems to work great. StandardFirmata works perfectly. Tested backpack and firmata versions of HC-SR04 with no problems. Guessing you still have some work to do on the node-pixel side
ajfisher
@ajfisher
yeah node-pixel needs some proper work to bring it in effectively. Plan for the next few days is to get that trucking
ajfisher
@ajfisher
Just updated hc-sr04 firmata code to latest firmata and published that to master on http://github.com/ajfisher/nodebots-hcsr04/ so that can be installed now via direct load. Will publish to NPM soon as I'm upgrading the backpack to handle multiple HC-sr04 sensors on the one backpack as I'm finding this to be quite a common use case. See deets here for comment also: ajfisher/nodebots-hcsr04#5

@gorhgorh
@ajfisher my bad i totally forgot to test ! Is it still usefull ?
(if yes i'll have time this week end
ajfisher
@ajfisher
No worries @gorhgorh if you have some time then another person testing is always handy ahead of NodeBots day!
ajfisher
@ajfisher
Hoping to do another release tonight that should install from a local directory if it's available. Just need to figure out the right way to pass it in as a directive to tell interchange what to do. OUtocme will be it will just grab the local bin that's appropriate and jam it onto the arduino
Legendaire
@Legendaire
Since this is a robotics centered project I am going to try and ask here. I've been looking for a day now for a program which will stream video and add text. ffmpeg will add the text but I want the text to change. The text will have telemetry data from the sensors on my robot hense it needs to be dynamic. Think of it just like a heads up display. This would seem so common that there should be ready made stuff for it. Does anyone know where to look?
ajfisher
@ajfisher

Sorry I missed this - not sure why I don't get notifications for this room!

OpenCV is probably what you're after.

@Legendaire ^^^
What you do is bind your video stream to OpenCV, map a bunch of operations to it (eg transforms, corrections, image detection etc) and then you can draw to the output frame as well and then you can pass that onto a stream for eg serving.
This hasn't seen an update for a little bit (but it's mostly just bindings anyway) but this is usually considered the reference library for Node and is what I use.
Legendaire
@Legendaire
@ajfisher Thanks for the info. I am looking into this. Do you know if the Intel Edison SOC will have enough power for opencv?
ajfisher
@ajfisher
I've run it on an RPi1 so Edison should be okay - it really comes down to what is your acceptable frame rate for your application and what operations are you doing to each image and at what size - small image, not much in the way of manipulation or detection and I reckon you're pretty good.
ASadeghi
@cvb0rg
Hi AJ, is this project still maintained? We have a Pi based application running on it that decided to quit on us, might be the out of date dependencies here.
ajfisher
@ajfisher
@cvb0rg yes to the extent that is mostly works so doesn't need huge number of changes. Can you tell me what it did and how it failed and I can take a look
keaixx365
@keaixx365
@ajfisher for the issue #38, do you want more details?
@ajfisher when I flash https://github.com/ajfisher/node-pixel/tree/master/firmware/build/backpack directly from arduino IDE, it is successful, but when I flash using the nodebots-interchange, it runs into error:Sending 3020: receiveData timeout after 400ms.
keaixx365
@keaixx365
I've tried 3 nano board in different PC, it shows the same error...
