I will now introduce me proper: The name's Tony (nickname azureguy) and I've been working with modding tools in the past few years. I even finished something :P (http://tinyurl.com/z7wmcyp)
There also are a bunch of prototypes and other experiments I did, but never finished. I have plenty of practice, at the very least.
My main talents lie in game design and storywriting. With "game design" I mean more than just ideas btw. game mechanics, balancing, testing, occasionally even level design, writing everything down in an organized document (or Excel sheet for the numbers) etc.
And story... well, that's always subjective anyway :P. But I know how to do a organized story and character development, things like that.

Welcome, so I am Janek working in an IT company all the day, finished a few modules (see github) and 4-5 big project (websites/patforms in web) but now i want to get some practice in unity & co :)

I really enjoy storywriting and making concept art. I think i am in a different timezone then yall im Est. I have no previous game making experience but i would love to know what yall have in mind and im sure that i could help in some way if yall are interested in having me.

i will sum all ideas we get right now
Low-poly design
3d survival rpg
with skilltree and weapons
close combat as well as wide range and magic attacks
open world with dungeons in it
if somebody gets an better/additional idea just yell :)

Unity¿
?
So low polyskyrim
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 14:04
interesting...you know, I've worked on a game with the same keypoints (minus the open world aspect).
well, more like concept
anyway, let me see if I can find my old document somewhere on this HDD
it could help to establish a foundation at least, and we advance from there. As opposed to start from zero.
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:08
yeah unity
skyrim has no dungeons afaik
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 14:10
I think that concept is a pretty solid idea!
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 14:10
yeah, only 20+ copy-pasted caves :P
*I meant that as a response to the Skyrim dungeon thing
thank you!

Any chance yall are interested in making something thats compatible with the oculus rift?
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:11
but yeah, and i think it could work, cause a open world low poly can be VERY pretty and beautifull
we can include this feature :)
unity is supporting it
afaik

I'm down with first-person/VR as well.
unless VR also works with third-person
who am I kidding?
that's very... experimental.
but hey, we will see as we develop, right?
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 14:14
For sure! I also came across a Plugin for Autodesk Maya that afaik allows me to convert a environment or game i make into an instant VR play area
where you can simulate the VR and just walk around in it
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:15
we will see, first we should get started :)
Shaboo are u familiar with low poly? could a create a char in maya? :)
i'll setup a git soon
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 14:18
Yes! My profile pic is a character i've modeled, textured and rigged in maya.
While ive been sitting here i've been just messing around modeling some kinda half duck half rabbit creature
xD
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:20
maybe you can model something (quick and dirty) that we can use as main char for a while :)

azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 14:24
Me too. I only tried it out once before, but I think now it's time I do a crash course. That's what all the video tutorials are for, after all XD
btw, I think I can help with creating the maps.
would feel bad to only contrubite text, after all XD
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 14:24
Dude Text and storyboarding is everything! haha
If for whatever we all decide on you write a concept for like you did for the Underground game. It will make things sooooo much easier for Modeling and getting the general feel of what things should look like

i think we shouldnot cluster ourself, just do where you have fun with, its your freetime and we are all hobbiests
ofc are there some task nobody wants to do but then we have to do it together :D :)
maybe we can met up on teamspeak later :) i can provide everything, got my own server farm at work
with a bunch of servers :)

That sounds Great!
Janek Rahrt

Feb 18 2016 14:30
so im pretty good as netcode and all that stuff to, if we want to create a multiplayer game
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 14:30
I have Skype too, alternatively. But I can dig Teamspeak as well.
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:30
so sum up your ideas and lets create some concept :D
i hat skype sry
hate
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 14:31
I don't blame you. The latest interface design alone is reason enough to quit Skype. (I use an older version for that reason).
So Teamspeak it is then.
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:33
:D
i can also setup slack if needed, made vor devs :)
but i think we are fine with gitter and ts
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 14:35
yeah, gitter works just fine.
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 14:41
ok so i have an idea that i've already started modeling a Teaser trailer and possibly an Opening Menu Scene for. Its a 3d game that is similar to pokemon (in that you can capture and battle with totally unique creatures and monsters). The setting of the game is a junkyard on earth many years after a nuclear apocalypse. All life has ceased to exist...But when all hope is lost, a Barrel of toxic waste falls off of a heap of trash and into a puddle in the Junkyard. The
camera then pans outwards to show the name of the game "Trashmora". And then it starts zooming into the toxic spill...and further into it until we can see microscopic organisms start to form in the puddle
Then they begin to eat eachother and grow in size and the camera fades to black.
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:44
wow, that is what you already did?
ehm i think for a game
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 14:44
The next thing we see is from the eyes of our character in a microscopic world where anything is possible and houses are made up of trash from junkyard and just small items such as thumbtacks and whatnot.. because everything is microscopic
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:44
the post-apocaliptic scene is used too much..
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 14:45
i agree! but the thing is the post apocalipticness isnt shown
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:45
ahh ok :) i really like your "pokemon-like" idea
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 14:45
because the entire game takes place in this fantasy puddle where everyone is super small but they have no clue ! hahahah and thanks man
but yea i had already started working on this just for personal fun:)

but will leave the channel open
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:49
jesse would you like the idea of low-poly/voxel or you prefer the classic 3d realistic style ? :)
123p10
@123p10
Feb 18 2016 14:49
So are we starting fro. Scratch or using azureguys
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 14:49
I think that realistic is to time consuming
plus I do it all day long at work
123p10
@123p10
Feb 18 2016 14:49
Poly/voxel allows a better feel realistic would be too tough unless azure guy is that skilled
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 14:50
I am really fast at low poly stuff
and it is popular right now
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:50
i would prefer it too
..
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 14:50
i love the idea of voxel. But perhaps a bit stylized so it doesnt look just like minecraft
not that i mind haha minecraft is awesome
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 14:51
like Fez?
The reason people are making low poly style games is because it is quick to produce the art
and looks cool
and is nostalgic for 90's kids
but either way
the open world needs to go
123p10
@123p10
Feb 18 2016 14:52
So um if someone wants to make a basic first person scene by 3:40 est i can start scripting it
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 14:52
wait this is first person?
123p10
@123p10
Feb 18 2016 14:52
Oh nvm
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 14:52
it doesnt have to be haha.
123p10
@123p10
Feb 18 2016 14:53
Ok what view is it
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 14:53
it is hard to do a good looking low poly first person
because the nature of the camera allows you to get right up on top of things
123p10
@123p10
Feb 18 2016 14:53
So top down? Thirdperson
Either way if someone would like to design some sort of basic scene
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 14:54
normally these things are started using the primitives in unity
the art comes a little later
123p10
@123p10
Feb 18 2016 14:55
Also before i go
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:55
i mean this low poly style, and i dont think that it is ugly (like minecraft)
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 14:55
yeah
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:55
i think its ver beautyfull and artic
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 14:55
i can do that
no problem
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:56
an importenter fact is
can you teach it?
i think its REALLY nice, especially for games, and there is no "skyrim-like" game in low-poly out there
but it would be so beatyfull
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 14:57
Wow that does look really cool
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:58
jep, not that minecraft "shit"
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 14:58
I can try to replicate that
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 14:58
what? :o
ahh ok, sry my fault
we could create creaturs like this
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 15:01
Thats awesome
yeah i think so too, and i would love a game in that style :)
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 15:02
sorry guys i was talking to my boss
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:03
alright :D you dont have to be online
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 15:03

you could also team how to do it to shaboo
Shaboofalaboofin

Feb 18 2016 15:06
ok here are some things that I did quickly to see if this was easy

but these are like WIPs
not as good as i can do i think
(first two things on blog)
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:07
:+1:
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 15:07
what if the game was like low poly 3rd person skyrim with the camera pulled way out
kind of like the camera in Below
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 15:08
I love the whole voxel low poly skyrim idea but i feel like first person would be soooo much fun
and I wanna use my oculus with it when mine comes in:)
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 15:08
i dont think it will work
with this art style
like
low poly stuff just looks like a flat plane when you are close to it
team fortress 2 is a rare exception but they use lots and lots of textures
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:10
3rd person would be fine first, its not much work to programm a option for firstperson view as well later
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 15:11
yea i love the low poly try 1 scene you made. just imagine walking into that cave in first person. but yea 3rd is fine too
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:12
@JesseWalsh i think its possible, cause if you come closer the engine would render more details, irregularities, noise
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 15:12
hmmm
what details?
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:12
you know what i mean?
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 15:12
not really
like mip maps
different level of details at different distances?
i will try to show you an example of what i think the problem is
can i post pictures in this chat?
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:15
a wall dont have to be plain, from distance it looks fine when its flat too (low poly/low details) but if you come closer you could render more details, you could replace the one big flat poly with many, little polys, irregularities, a real cliff isnot flat aswell, from far it looks like, but if you come closer there are differences in ever 20 cm
no just upload on extern and post link
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 15:24
YEAH
caps sorry
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:24
np
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 15:24
more time consuming to create high detailed art assetts
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:24
yeah, tahts right
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 15:25
2 artists AND open world
might be tough
unless assets are low detail
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 15:26
couldnt we just make them in low detail and then just increase the subdivisions?
slightly?
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:27
ehm
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 15:27
or will that change the look:O
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:27
think it can be done in maya or unity full-automatic or?
if it change the look, we could improve easily
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 15:28
i can def do it in maya
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 15:29
i mean
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:29
jesse where did in design ur works?
ps?
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 15:29
just adding a smooth modifier
and hardening all the edges isnt going to do much
I do archviz
but studied game art in college
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:31
ouh wow :) isnt it possible to increase the subdivisions on ready assets?
nice :)
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 15:31
yes of course
but that isnt going to add detail
not really
im a little busy right now
i will try to show an example of what i mean in an hour or two
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:34
its alright man :)
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 15:34
nice chatting
later
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:37
ill settup git, so we can share assets/data
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 15:38

I have a question: Assuming we do create a big open-world, what do we fill it with? Aka what type of gameplay do we use to make good use of that giant space?

Or are we just gonna make an exploration game where we move around, and the gameplay is second nature?

I mean, this is going to be very work-intensive either way (low-poly or not), so it would help to realize what our focus should be early on.

Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:39
I really like the "skyrim-like" idea
maybe with a few "pokemon" features
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 15:40
maybe we could even have our creatures be companions that can deal damage to monsters
as well as players being able to battle them for fun
but lm really hyped for it to be skyrim like
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:41
me too
added u all to my git resp, its private
yeah i think a companion in low poly would be cute and cool :)
i can write artificial intelligence very well
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 15:47
Having all sorts of creatures to walk around does give a big area a purpose. So I'm on board with the Pokemon idea.
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:47
yeah, and may our open world has not to be big, it just has to be feature rich
single or multiplayer?
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 15:52
I'm fine with either one.
Depends on how good our network code can be to be honest.
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 15:55
ok my netcode knowlage is my biggest part of code knowlage, so i think its possible..
but is it needed?
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 16:00
Like I said, I'm fine with both options. I don't need an online/multiplayer option per se. I'll leave the choice to you and the other teammembers.
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 16:01
yeah, we can also see later
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 16:01
i think a online mutliplayer would be cool
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 16:02

Perhaps we can add a separate PvP mode (a coliseum) where the players fight each other. Or maybe even fight bosses together.

It would be optional, and separate from the singleplayer part which is open-world.

it certainly is easier to handle than an MMO setup with open-world and tons of players in the same area.
123p10
@123p10
Feb 18 2016 16:09
If we used unity search up quill18creates his fps tutorials shows good photon usage for easy multiplayer
Honestly we should focus on singleplayer for now
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 16:12
yeah, let us work on the core gameplay first, and see if it's multiplayer-worthy at all.
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 16:23
I think a lot of this is overly ambitious
lets focus in on the core of what the game is and work on that first
things like open world, multiplayer, etc should be worked in once a little cross section of gameplay is built
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 16:26
yea haha we havent even chosen a concept yet
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 16:26
also why i want to discourage first person
the farther away the camera is from the art the easier it is to make
if we say open world first person multiplayer rpg with monster catching elements is our goal
we will never finish with a handful of people working in their spare time
if we focus down we might be able to come up with something manageable
and then expand once we have a handle on the basics
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 16:34

in this case, my concept might be better to get started with.

Not to sound all self-advertising here (I actually like the Pokemon concept too), but what I had in mind was: very small areas, with a basic combat system.

You explore each area to find loot (which is random), while defending yourself from the monsters. Loot rewards money, and money is needed to buy better equipment, as well as some quest items to advance to the next area.

At the very least, we could test the waters with the combat engine, and we can always recycle the assets for the open-world areas later on. So basically, create a prototype on a small scale, and maybe go big afterwards if we're lucky.
*when I refer to "my concept" I mostly mean the story I had created, and the combat system for which I also have already created some numbers, skills etc. So we could use that verbatim and test it in the system - that's all what I mean. Everything can be changed later on of course.

Feb 18 2016 16:38
diablo like?
i like that idea
maybe like combine the gameplay aspects of diable but with a exploration element?

Spent like 3 days o this project uses royalty free assets but here u go unity with very basic. Combat https://drive.google.com/folder/d/0BziMDXdCQ35ScmJTRk03NnBuRWM/edit
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 16:41
firstly, yes it might be similar to Diablo what I had in mind. But I still have my own design philosophies in terms of combat mechanics.
secondly, perhaps we should approach this from a "step by step" approach.

Ok someone choose a name i will start a subreddit gitter is getting a little crowded

123p10
@123p10
Feb 18 2016 16:47
We need some place to post permanetly I feel gitter is good for quick IM but accessing previous posts is tough here

Feb 18 2016 16:48
@123p10 what assets do i need to pull for this banana game build?
the whole thing?
123p10
@123p10
Feb 18 2016 16:48
umm hold on let me check
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 16:48
can you just put the build folder and the exe in one spot by themselves?
123p10
@123p10
Feb 18 2016 16:48
sure
hold on
um I think all you need is the exe in the root folder
but I will export in one second
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 16:52
@123p10: regarding the "post permanently" thing, what do you have in mind? Personally I've only ever used an old-fashioned PHPbb forum for non-general discussions. Maybe there exist a modern forum alternative somewhere - but I doubt reddit works as a forum replacement.
123p10
@123p10
Feb 18 2016 16:54
check this out
this si what I had in mind
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 16:57
that would work
123p10
@123p10
Feb 18 2016 16:59

even just a random name for it

a real forum would be better

azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 17:18
Maybe Janek can set something up? I think he mentioned earlier that he wanted to setup a Teamspeak server as well. So I think he should have access to a server as well.

@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 17:29

hi
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 17:46
hey hows it goin
Jesse do you have any links on tutorials of how to replicate that style or low poly?
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 17:47
no....
I can explain though
depending on what software you use
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 17:48
sweet thank you im on autodesk maya 2015
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 17:48
ok
i used maya in school
max professionally
for the stuff like mountains and rocks and terrain
zbrush is the way to go
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 17:50
ahhh i dont have zbrush. i wish i did
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 17:50
ok
what is your skill level as a modeller?
in maya
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 17:51
i'd say pretty experienced. the issue with making the low poly stuff is that
ive never deliberately tried to make itxD
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 17:52
well to be honest I have only done a couple of things very recently
in that style
i usually try to find reference for what I am doing
and mimic the style
maybe for starting you can make the less organic type shapes
like bridges and buildings
and i will do the terrain and mountains and foliage
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 17:53
o ok i will deffinetly try that
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 17:53
you know smoothing groups?
or maybe they are called soft and hard edge in maya?
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 17:54
yes!
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 17:54
so basically you want almost everything to be hard edge
except for things that are like round
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 17:55
ooo ok i had soft edge on this particular tree
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 17:55
for a tree i would say ALL hard edges
that will create the faceted low poly look
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 17:56
sweeeet yea i just build the tree base
wow
i see how you did it now
thanks man
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 17:56
yeah
for a tree though think a little outside the box
like dont just use a cylinder for the trunk
move the verts around and give it a unique shape
silouhette is the MOST important thing
Shaboofalaboofin
@Shaboofalaboofin
Feb 18 2016 17:57
got it
yea i noticed your pentagon trees
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 17:58
yeah that tree is rough
but workable
trees is a good place to start
we will need a lot
dont worry about colors for now
we probably use a limited color palette
to make everything really pop
maybe with subtle old paper texture
the majority of our look and feel will come from the lighting
Janek Rahrt
@janek26
Feb 18 2016 18:22
i have zbrush setup, if u know what i mean
so everybody can with zbrush, until release, them Wochenende schould licence it

Feb 18 2016 18:25
Hey @janek26 , I'm very new to the gamedev thing. So I'm a bit out of the loop on things. Is there anywhere where I can read the status of the project/plan of the project? Also, do you need to see my work? What do you require me to do , etc.
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 18:27
@FKDesign: This is pretty much Day One, so we haven't established any team schedules yet. Give us some more time before we have everything settled, ok?

JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 18:33
I will mess with the mobile version of blog in a bit
azureguy
@azureguy
Feb 18 2016 18:34
Also, all it takes is for Blogspot to have a server issue and the forum is unavailable, or gone even. So having a backup forum, at the very least, would he good in the long run. So feel free to try something of your own Janek
JesseWalsh
@JesseWalsh
Feb 18 2016 18:35
What sort of flexibility?
