I have a question: Assuming we do create a big open-world, what do we fill it with? Aka what type of gameplay do we use to make good use of that giant space?
Or are we just gonna make an exploration game where we move around, and the gameplay is second nature?
I mean, this is going to be very work-intensive either way (low-poly or not), so it would help to realize what our focus should be early on.
Perhaps we can add a separate PvP mode (a coliseum) where the players fight each other. Or maybe even fight bosses together.
It would be optional, and separate from the singleplayer part which is open-world.
in this case, my concept might be better to get started with.
Not to sound all self-advertising here (I actually like the Pokemon concept too), but what I had in mind was: very small areas, with a basic combat system.
You explore each area to find loot (which is random), while defending yourself from the monsters. Loot rewards money, and money is needed to buy better equipment, as well as some quest items to advance to the next area.
