@jheinen can you run ENV["GKS_WSTYPE"] = "cairox11"; using GR; GR.scatter(rand(100),rand(100),alpha=0.2) and then lsof -p JULIAPID | awk '{print $9}' | grep '\.so', where JULIAPID is the process id of julia?
seems like something isn't getting loaded on my end
just to confirm... are you on 64-bit ubuntu?

@tbreloff : Please untar the following archive in your home directory: http://gr-framework.org/downloads/gr-for-tom.tgz
Our CI server is currently being maintained. I'll build a dedicated Ubuntu 16.04 GR archive on Monday. I have given up to deploy a common Debian/Ubuntu GR distribution. Those systems are too different (Xorg vs. Mir).
I played around with readelf and LD_DEBUG - but I did not manage to find a workaround. Standalone GR works; the Plots/GR combination does not.

@tbreloff : Happy to hear, that this version works.. On Monday we'll setup an Ubuntu 16.04 LTS build host and create a self-contained GR distribution. Pkg.build("GR") will then differ between Debian and Ubuntu. The version you are using now doesn't have MuPDF support ...
