@rtyler You can merge the PR #64 when you are happy with it.

@ysb33r in #64 the comment about the script being absolute
does that mean script will need to be an absolute path in the rake + Rakefile excample?
Schalk W. Cronjé
@ysb33r
Oct 08 2014 15:45
No
it can be relative to the working dir in which JRubyExec gets executed.
rtyler @rtyler nods

@ysb33r thanks to an intro from @mojavelinux I'll be sitting down with Gradle folks to talk about jruby more in depth the week of the 20th

That’s great. I’l also be in the US then.
I can give you my list of things to talk about :)

ah right, you had mentioned that to me befre
if you've got a list of questions/etc for me to discuss, please email them on over

  • Building a new repository type - currently too much work delving into internal classes
  • Ability to run a scripting container in-process with access to the Project object
  • Reflecting Rake tasks back into Gradle in a similar fashion that is possible with Ant
  • SourceSets for Ruby, so that it can be built ‘natively' from Gradle.

the first one I've already started a discussion about on gradle-dev
Schalk W. Cronjé
@ysb33r
Oct 08 2014 17:15
I’ve seen that :)
R. Tyler Croy
@rtyler
Oct 08 2014 17:22
what's stopping the second one?
Schalk W. Cronjé
@ysb33r
Oct 08 2014 17:25
I am experimenting with it
But having a chat with them about what we would want to do, does not hurt
Anyhow, my I don’t have much time for experiments atm, so anything someone else can get too first, is good by me
rtyler @rtyler nods

when are you going to be available for hire to hack on jruby-gradle full time :P
Schalk W. Cronjé
@ysb33r
Oct 08 2014 17:42
Haha
rtyler @rtyler is willing to ask for contractors to get this stuff more matured

If I hit a dry spell, I’ll let you know :)
R. Tyler Croy
@rtyler
Oct 08 2014 17:55
woot
@ysb33r can you email me rates and whatnot just in case? that way I can have something ready sooner if you hit a dry-spell
Schalk W. Cronjé
@ysb33r
Oct 08 2014 17:57
I’ll have to think on that as my normal rates will not be applicable. (And I might have to go learn some Ruby)
R. Tyler Croy

heh, okie doke
I'm more than willing to go get budget if it's going to make my day-to-day life easier at Lookout :P

I’ll let you know. Hectic weeks ahead, until at least the 19 Nov. Includes 6x long-haul flights

Is Lookup a typical west coast startup? Or is it a big company?
R. Tyler Croy
@rtyler
Oct 08 2014 18:12
depends on how you define either of those terms really
Schalk W. Cronjé
@ysb33r
Oct 08 2014 18:14
obvisouly it is not the size of a symantec or an Intel Security. I would just guess it is about the same size as Cylance Inc.
R. Tyler Croy
@rtyler
Oct 08 2014 18:14
we're ~250
Schalk W. Cronjé
@ysb33r

my team is ~7
Schalk W. Cronjé
@ysb33r
Oct 08 2014 18:17
And you all do Ruby webapps?
R. Tyler Croy
@rtyler
Oct 08 2014 18:17
my team is responbislbe for the tooling and whatnot to build and deploy webapps on the JVM
not necessarily Ruby-specifically but we're historically a ruby shop
Schalk W. Cronjé
@ysb33r
Oct 08 2014 18:19
I have an interesting question: For you JVM deployments, are you microservices or container-based (TomCat, JBoss etc.)
R. Tyler Croy
@rtyler
Oct 08 2014 18:22
both!
throwing services into Jetty
not multi-tenant Jetty though
haven't needed/wanted that yet
Schalk W. Cronjé
@ysb33r
Oct 08 2014 18:25
Yeah multi-tenant is the word I should have used. Jetty is pretty lightweight. A customer I am at the moment still uses WebSphere - I reckon it is causing them more harm than good.
R. Tyler Croy
@rtyler
Oct 08 2014 18:27
heh
we're not using in-JVM messaging or anything like that, stuff that must be messaged gets punted into Kafka
Schalk W. Cronjé
@ysb33r
Oct 08 2014 18:28
nice...
Did you bump into a guy at JavaOne, called Peter Pilgrim?
R. Tyler Croy
@rtyler
Oct 08 2014 18:33
probably
rtyler @rtyler isn't sure
R. Tyler Croy

Oct 08 2014 18:35
who knows
nobody wanted to talk to me, I'm a JRuby guy :P
Schalk W. Cronjé
@ysb33r
Oct 08 2014 18:37
LOL. At least JRuby is going places, unlike Jython
R. Tyler Croy
@rtyler
Oct 08 2014 18:44
Jython has still been holding on, somehow
they've had releases this year
rtyler @rtyler boggles
Schalk W. Cronjé
@ysb33r
Oct 08 2014 18:45
unfortunately they are still stuck at Python 2.7 language level instead of 3.x
rtyler @rtyler nods
R. Tyler Croy
@rtyler
Oct 08 2014 18:45
3.x sucks anyways :P
rtyler @rtyler is a reformed Python developer
Schalk W. Cronjé
@ysb33r
Oct 08 2014 18:46
there was some 3.x-based app that I wanted to run on the JVM, which I obviously could not do

@rtyler WRT jruby-gradle/jruby-gradle-jar-plugin#14, I wonder whether you are willing to try something as I am not sure how to reproduce it in a unit test. If you add annotate initScript with @Input in BootstrapClassExtension and then re-run your case with the SNAPSHOT jar, see if it still has the same behaviour.
