@MelanieIStefan
Just a quick thought - can we use our time line data to get a sense of how far comp bio "lags behind" general bio?
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
Nice idea, but the data prior to ~2003 is pretty bad because of the low number of publications
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
Well, shit
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
Being a woman in comp bio with a female boss is basically like being a woman in regular bio :)
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
Yeah.
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
Need to think about this some more ...
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
Honestly, I can decide whether to be happy that female PI's make such a big difference, or to be depressed that men are such shit :-/
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
It might not all be men's fault. I think junior scientists might be drawn to mentors who are in some way similar, so a lab led by a woman will have more female students and postdocs.
Just like a lab with an Italian PI will have more Italian students than others, even if Italians are not discriminated against elsewhere.
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
But it's interesting in showing what a trickle-down effect hiring decisions can have. Or am I interpreting too much into this?
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
True...
Not sure about trickle-down - I think we'd have to do some sort of time-series analysis
I don't know if this data is up to the tast
task*
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
Lines are linear regressions… for the bio data set, R^2 = 0.06, and the slope is negative (P=0.0025), but not by much (95% confidence interval is [-0.004326 to -0.0009556])
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
@MelanieIStefan FYI - first pass of results section is done - could probably use some clean-up, but I think the gist is there
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
Github repo is all cleaned up, and submitted to zenodo. I also added figures to Figshare
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
Had a first crack at the intro - feel free to edit as appropriate
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
Ok, accepted changes and had a go at the abstract- I'm leaving it alone for now
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
Sounds good, thanks! I'll take a look and make additional suggestions.
would you have time for a quick check-in this weekend to make sure we're ready to go?
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
Sure. I'll be on a train for a few hours on Sunday afternoon, but could do Sunday night (after 6pm your time), or else any time on Saturday
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
That seems crazy late for you - let's plan for Saturday if we've had any comments from the CFs, otherwise maybe just a quick check-in on Monday?
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
Sounds good
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
FYI - tables are posted
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
Sorry I missed you on Monday. What's the situation? Should we have a quick chat in the next few days? Is there anything I can do?
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
That was my fault, sorry! I finally got some CFs to read, there are minor comments is like to address. but my plan is to get that done today and submit. One thing: do you have a citation for the notion that women tend to publish in lower impact journals?
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
That was somewhere in the stuff I read. Let me try and find it this afternoon
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
great! Thanks.
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
You are right, can't find anything about this. Just that men get cited more than women, but nothing about the types of journals they publish in. Should we change the sentence? "One possible explanation might be that women are less likely to publish in high-impact journals ..."
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
Yeah, I like that
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
FYI - Johanna said she's going to read/comment by tomorrow noon, so I kinda feel like we should wait for that
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
Absolutely! I really value Johanna's opinion.
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
OK, johanna's left her comments - I think I addressed all of them.
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
Can you make one last quick run-through before I submit to make sure I didn't mess anything up?
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
On it.
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
Ok, I had a readthrough and suggested a few small changes. After that, it looks good to me!
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
Great! I made a couple edits to that section you flagged.
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
Looks great! As far as I'm concerned it can go out.
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
Excellent! I've submitted it to BioArXiv, and preparing the Nat Comm submission - will probably do that by tomorrow morning
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
Awesome!
Melanie Stefan
@MelanieIStefan
Sorry for not getting back to your email earlier- PLoS Biology sounds good to me
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
No sweat - I've been working on the conversion
Kevin Bonham
@kescobo
@MelanieIStefan I just added paste of the google doc of the manuscript (kescobo/gender-comp-bio@06c59ec) and started playing a bit with formatting... doing a google crash course on table formatting
I'm going to start a branch to make my edits, I suggest you do the same and we'll deal with merge conflicts (if there are any) later
