has anyone used dynamodb with node? if so, did you just use the aws-sdk or something more like dynamoose?

Used aws-sdk directly for DynamoDB before (back in 2012-14). The new generation ORM type interfaces are certainly a step up from the rather basic SDK methods. Having said that, is your code in AWS Lambda? Some of these ORMs might have dependency on Node 4/5x and Lambda only supports 0.10x currently
