dr3s
@dr3s
mainly I want to configure jmx and metrics reporting. locp seems to be the most active puppet module for cassandra but wikimedia has one that has quite a bit more templates and stuff
yeah I hate messing with it but the docs say that cassandra-env.sh is what should be used
they don't even support /etc/defaults/cassandra anymore
I also want to set JVM options like G1GC
Joshua Knarr
@tibers
having personally messed with it, oh god don't. :)
dr3s
@dr3s
not sure why messing with the script is recommended by cassandra devs but I found docs that it is. Even if it was to just source another file put there by puppet, something has to be done.
JMX pretty much demands it
Joshua Knarr
@tibers
so just specifically to the JMX question, looking at one of my boxes here, I see where it would make sense to make it a toggle or something.
3rd paragraph
LOCAL_JMX=false is the start
but there are others
Joshua Knarr
@tibers
the Haunted Voice of Personal Experience is that tuning java memory by hand in cassandra or garbage collection options typically results in chasing the off heap storage balance to the ends of the earth.
dr3s
@dr3s
it's good to be wary but regardless there are real reasons to modify that file
Joshua Knarr
@tibers
sure. totally agree, esp if you want to really dig into the JMX bits
dr3s
@dr3s
need to in order to secure it. turning on remote jmx and not using ssl and auth is not a good idea
guess I'll do it the old fashioned way
Joshua Knarr
@tibers
you could be an awesome possum and submit a PR once you get it mapped out to your liking. ;)
Ben is pretty cool and open to suggestions.
dr3s
@dr3s
absolutely if it's not a total hack. can't say I'm proud of any of my puppet modules
Joshua Knarr
@tibers
hahah
I feel like we need to have a come-to-jesus meeting anyway with @dallinb over what the project wants to support. The datastax stuff is becoming more closed and drifting from the main project. My job wanted to know what the LoE was to cut over.
dr3s
@dr3s
I just realized it wasn't just opscenter that became closed. deprecating dsc means I will only use apache c* from now on
it's a bit concerning if it means datastax stops contributing there as well
Joshua Knarr
@tibers
yeah I am sort of waiting to see if the apache project wants to have a fight with them. ;)
Joshua Knarr
@tibers
ah ha. good catch. I've never used that. :)

@dallinb
Hi @dr3s and @tibers sorry I missed this conversation. Just changed contract and things are pretty hectic. Well done @dr3s for spotting cassandra::file that is indeed why it there. To give you a heads up, I am looking at the transition from DSC to Apache for the module but with the added complication that Apache Cassandra only seems to be being built by the project for Debian (which is not the best of news for @tibers if my memory serves me correctly). The Apache work is being looked at as part of #369 and I am working on improving documentation as part of #351.
Joshua Knarr
@tibers
yeah we're a centos shop and moving towards the AMI amazon provides for "amazon linux"

@dallinb
Wondering if the community may be better served by our offering RPM packages of the Apache Cassandra deployments?
Joshua Knarr
@tibers
you want to get into the RPM rolling business?
Ben Dalling
@dallinb
Nobody "wants" to get into that stuff ;-), but in the absence of anybody else doing it. Would it be useful?
Joshua Knarr
@tibers
I'm on the fence about that just having to roll rpms for the apache-storm project for work
I kinda say yes because I think it would be valuable to have another source of unmolested code but I'm just thinking that I don't want to be rolling sources for every distro under the sun
Joshua Knarr
@tibers
OK
I asked about this in the facebook group I run and they suggested the OpenSuSE build service: https://build.opensuse.org/
we might have a winnar

2.5.0 has been released. Please see https://forge.puppet.com/locp/cassandra/changelog for details.
Ben Dalling
@dallinb
Since late May 2015 when release 0.1.0 was uploaded to PuppetForge there have been 77 releases of this module and as of today there have been 549,577 downloads all together. However a change in client company (and another one around the corner) mean that my focus is not upon Cassandra as it once was and I am transferring ownership to Vox Pupuli (https://voxpupuli.org). At this time I would like to thank all those who have made contributions and suggestions over the past two years. I will make as much effort as possible to put pull requests into the new project when Cassandra 4 is released (whenever that happens).
FYI follow #394 for progress on the migration.
Joshua Knarr
@tibers
awwwww congrats though!
sit down, have a pint at the winchester, and wait for this to all blow over. ;)
you were a huge help with getting the tests written too, thanks for your work!

Hi Team
I got a trouble while connecting to JMX exporter
From Prometheus
Ben Dalling
@dallinb
@katikireddy622 this chat room was for the Puppet module to install Cassandra. That module is no longer supported by this team and your question seems more suited to a Cassandra support chat group. Sorry.
