    hey folks! we are moving to discord because gitter has been pretty unsupported the last couple of years. it's one advantage is that it's easy to sign up via github (which is really nice!) but discord is also easy to sign up for (through other means) but it has lots of other nice features: much better mobile support, reactions to not clutter up the chat, and far less weird little bugs
    the core team has been talking about it for a while now, although that hasn't been visible. we went back and forth a few times on it and didn't want to involve the wider community in the indecision

    I am in some discords but never active there anymore. Most of the time I spend there is to talk to my brother and friends to play a game or two. Which never happen anymore since I got a kid.

    I am a bit anti slack and discord nowadays, been considering removing Discord for a while now. I would even think Telegram would be better than discord. Mostly because of Discord's privacy: https://archive.is/DG5KV and https://stallman.org/discord.html

    What makes me most anti are:

    Compiles aggregate data on user demographics, interests, and behavior. Discord reserves the right to share this with current/future partners and third parties, and at NO point communicates how long Discord, its partners, or these mystery third parties store all of this data.

    and:

    "Personalizes" advertising through tracking and advertising platforms may collect this data for use outside of Discord.
    Does not mention how long all of the data above is kept for, and again lazily refers you to the Privacy Policies of anyone they give your data to if you want to know what happens to it.

    and that they force people to add phone numbers in some situations.

    They might have changed this since that Reddit was written. But it won't change the attitude they have towards privacy.

    that's a really good point @confact
    our goal with this chatroom (or any chatroom) is building the community and supporting developers. it was becomming harder to do that on gitter, and we hope it will be better on discord. you're right to point out the privacy issues. We're going to at least try discord for now but that might change in the future!

    and so you know, I don't even disagree with you that those are bad privacy policies. I don't like that at all. I'm also looking at other tradeoffs of useability and practicality and discord is coming out ahead right now

    Lucky is configured to use sendgrid out of the box for emails. I tried signing up for a sendgrid account and they flagged my sign up request for a manual review and ended up denying me an account because "we've determined that you are not a good fit for our platform." Obviously this was incredibly annoying, but I'm not trying to complain about the service here.
    I was just wondering a) has anyone else had any problems signing up? If so maybe a different email service should be the default? And b) is there a ready made plugin for a different email service such as mailgun?

    @neutrinog I had that problem in the past, I had to create a new account and validate my domain, but you can use any shard for sending emails, I used one for sending emails with a gmail account

    meh, I'm gonna have to come back to this discord thing...I've lost access to my "mwlang" account somehow....haven't used Discord in a while, either. Seemed like last time I used it, it was attempting to track anything and everything I was doing. Little Snitch was not happy with Discord last go around.
    any chance to build a bot to bridge the gitter/discord divide?

    Why not using slack? I know it’s not free but I think it’s a little bit better than Discord and Gitter no?

    A bridge might work. they're generally not the nicest solution though
    @brunto I'm not sure about rocketchat or slack as far as data collection/privacy
    that's not to say that they are bad, but I wouldn't assume that they are

    it's a nice one, but IRC is pretty intimidating for lots of people. we wanted it to be easy to join

    RocketChat is a great open source solution, but does require standing up a server and hosting the community. I hosted a server for about 12 months and every other upgrade was breaking the system. I wonder if the Rocket Chat folks have stopped breaking their release cycle since.

    rocketchat is a really nice slack clone....not sure how close to feature parity it still is since Slack has been innovating rapidly lately.

    Yeah, good question. We felt that slack was a bit more difficult to join than discord. they also push their paid features like chat history or voice chat where discord doesn't. and threads weren't a priority for us.
    still too early to tell (it's been about 3 days :joy:) but we're enjoying it at the moment. there are some drawbacks for privacy minded folks you can read about above

    hey @asterite I just saw your message. Discord is getting threads. I know we had talked about using slack, but we ended up with discord (maybe @edwardloveall remembers). It's been really great so far. I'm enjoying it. Feel free to hop on and chat with us a bit to see how you like it.

    my recollection is that we were all sort of burnt out on slack and it was harder to join so we were looking for other options and found discord to be a fit (at least we hope)

    Yeah I think for me it was 1) not buggy 2) easy to join 3) free
    Slack had to have all kinds of weird workarounds or self-hosted stuff just to have public channels, and it always wanted you to upgrade. I also didn't want the expense hassle of setting up hosting. And it works! Gitter has so many weird bugs with mentiojning people, threads not working right, etc. It made it really hard to keep track of things
    Also some other communities I respect a lot have switched to Discord (Tailwind, Alpine, various other Laravel projects I'm following)
