@rob-p
Which is why I have 3 students currently ;)
Rik
@blahah
ah I see
interesting system - in the UK the student is never employed by the supervisor (and rarely by anyone at all) - they get tax-free living allowance from their funders, usually a research council
Rob Patro
@rob-p
Especially since none of them exhibit the @blahah level of extreme academic independence! :)
Rik
@blahah
if I wanted to I could change supervisor and take my funding with me, as I brought it in
lol!
Rob Patro
@rob-p
Yes; quite a unique (and admirable) situation!
Rik
@blahah
not unique in the UK though - pretty normal
although having the guts to change supervisor is extremely rare
my other half, Steph, did - took her funding and moved to another lab after deciding she was ... ethically unaligned ... with her supervisor
it caused quite a scandal
Rob Patro
@rob-p
Really? Having your own funding as a student is very rare in the US
Unless you have a fellowship (NSF) or some such
Rik
@blahah
I think almost all UK science PhD students are funded by research council studentships
and some by charitable or philanthropic grant-making organisations
a relatively small number are funded directly on a project
Rob Patro
@rob-p
Wow, that's very interesting to me. I wonder how the experience differs in the UK vs. US based on that
Rik
@blahah
we also tend to finish in 3 years here, sometimes up to 4
and there is generally no taught component - it's entirely research
but secondary schooling and undergrad go deeper and less broad than the US system
Rob Patro
@rob-p
Yea I know about the course-req differences
Didn't know the timeframe was shorter though, but that makes sense with research being the sole focus

So @Blahah whats the word on the feeding manuscript? I feel our momentum has grinded to a hault - also, seems that some of the stuff we had planned on doing (merging assemblies from >1 assembler) is now a part of the main transrate manuscript, so I’m not really sure where we stand..
I’m happy to continue on as a solo effort if you are otherwise occupied.

Rik
@blahah
hey
momentum has stalled for me on everything the last few weeks, sorry
Steph has been pretty unwell so I have been looking after her most of the time
Matt MacManes
@macmanes
everything ok?
oh dude.. I’m really sorry to hear
Rik
@blahah
various things, but most seriously a kidney infection
seems to be clearing up now though, and baby is fine
just that she's in pain all the time
Matt MacManes
@macmanes
wow.. alright, lets save talking about manuscript for another time.
Rik
@blahah
we are actually leaving merging out of the transrate paper, because we're not sure it works as expected
Matt MacManes
@macmanes
katie was really sick for several of her pregnancies. It was terribly nerve wracking
Rik
@blahah
sorry to hear that
yeah it's stressful
evolution really screwed women with pregnancy
Matt MacManes
@macmanes
no shit..
its no wonder pregnancy relatd mortality was high pre modern medicine.
Rik
@blahah
yeah!
on the ms, I am very interested in doing it still
and with transrate so close to submission it will be a good time to do it
