General queries for anyone interested in GSoC 2019 MacPorts projects. IMPORTANT: We have moved to Zulip. Please find us at https://macports-gsoc.zulipchat.com.
I made a bunch of changes. Students' handles are all missing
There's no such setting as Permissions
Umesh Singla
@umeshksingla
If you click on the settings bar next to your profile picture, the dropdown will have options like "Add people to this room", "Share this chat room", ... "Settings", "Permissions", ..., "Leave this room".

@mojca
I only have "Add people to this room", "Share this chat room", "Notifications", "Archives", "Open in GitHub", "Leave this room"
Moreover, it seems that the repository is now linked to this particular channel, as the notifications are still arriving to this channel rather than the gsoc-2019-webapp

Hi all o/
I like the github activity on right side of the chat window :)
Umesh Singla
@umeshksingla
actually i removed the Github integration on may 26
and I haven't been able to integrate it with the new room after the repository changed
also, mojca, are we planning to use the macports-webapp room under MacPorts org? we have to switch to it some time..
Mojca Miklavec
@mojca
I like the github activity on the right as well, but it's in the wrong room :(
I think that Rainer tried to set up something, but I'm not sure if he did enough. You almost need to sell your soul to gitter to enable the integration automatically, else you need to do something which we probably didn't do correctly just yet, or which might be a bug in gitter (given that we moved the repository, this might have confused gitter). Another issue I have with gitter is buggy behaviour in Safari, and tons of issues with Android app (my phone decided to shut it down as it was causing so many issues).

@umeshksingla
I'm using Chrome and iOS, it is not better than fine and the behavior is buggy at times, I'd say. Not a great UX either. About the integration, yeah, it is kinda taking a lot of effort to set it up. It was just one click action when I set it up for the first time. Now it only gives me the options of my own repositories and macports-gsoc/upt-macports to choose from.
Another few points: I often see empty contents in channels. I use it on Windows/Chrome, Safari/macOS, Adroid. And the annoying part is that I wanted to follow one other channel (I kept occasionally following it for months already) with heavy traffic. I now set up some windows notifications to be able to see messages about gsoc faster, but I cannot shut the other channel down short of unsubscribing, which is another shortcoming of the system. And I really miss topics inside channels.
I would not be too much in favour in keeping gitter as a long-term solution for MacPorts. It should be ok for discussing this year's gsoc project, but I'm not super happy in general, for anything but super simple usage.

Even I noticed some irregularity with the UI. When I select another channel, it actually doesn't load the chat conversation, until I reload the page.
IIRC, there were some other medium of conversation also discussed ?
haven't checked them out and kept track of the mails either
I would like to read about the projects (summary, experience, reviews, milestones, etc) as a blog or even a trac page, if it's already out there
@arjunsalyan yes I have seen the trac page. But maybe I missed the link to the blog about student experience.
something like the mail Karan sent out summarizing the work done so far and upcoming tasks. I might have missed mails regarding gsoc in general though. Maybe add '[GSoC 2019]' at the beginning of the mail subject.

Okay! I am yet to draft my first email. Will do it by today. I am also working on a blog- maybe I will set it up by this weekend.
