it's up on lighting-exp on the repo if you guys want to check it out. basically each character is a light source and the entire map is otherwise dark

that's not actually fog
that's just the absence of light
each character itself is a light source, it has an invisible light source on top of its head

basically, i want to have a background DIV on the menu start
then we can put images / other stuff into that DIV
but then when the game starts, that DIV should be destroyed
