hi im trying to compile monodevelop in ubuntu 14.04 but when i run make it gives me a bunch of "The type or namespace name `Gdk' could not be found. Are you missing an assembly reference?" along with other namespace errors etc.

very similar to this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/16485826/ubuntu-13-04-how-to-build-monodevelop-4-0-1

i tried their solution but comes up with the following:
sudo gacutil -i glib-sharp/2.12.0.035e10195dab3c99f/glib-sharp.dll
Failure adding assembly glib-sharp/2.12.0.0
35e10195dab3c99f/glib-sharp.dll to the cache: The system cannot find the file specified.

any help?

i also ran: sudo apt-get install mono-complete
not sure what im missing

did you: sudo apt-get install gtk-sharp2 gnome-sharp2

and I always use mono from the official mono-project.com repo: http://www.mono-project.com/docs/getting-started/install/linux/#debian-ubuntu-and-derivatives

yep, have done that
and the ./configure seems to run fine
i do get: aclocal: warning: autoconf input should be named 'configure.ac', not 'configure.in'
while running the ./configure though.. shows up a few times at the beginning
mono itself compiles fine
its monodevelop that wont :(

no it shouldn't, but you could try to open Main.sln in Monodevelop and to compile there
I just did the configure make dance on my Ubuntu 15.04 and it worked like a charm. An other thing you could try is to chackout some stable tag e.g. monodevelop-5.9.5.10
but I don't think that it would help. Looks like your mono installation is somehow broken

hmm yeah :( any recommendation on starting over? do i uninstall things or?
incidentally, could you let me know which commands you ran for the configure make dance you mentioned?

./configure && make
I'd try to purge all mono packages and reinstall them. Maybe use synaptic for that to be on the safe side not to purge some important system packages.

i thought the mono-complete was supposed to have installed all dependencies
how would one go about fixing a gac issue? (im very very new to all this as you can tell)

mono-complete + gtk-sharp2 + gnome-sharp2 should be enough

I've no idea about fixing the gac, I always use the packages. take a look at the gacutil manual pages.
