    Hello, nice to meet everybody!
    Alex Freeman
    @AlexFreeman_gitlab
    I've got a question for everyone on here (Steph suggested I ask Twitter as well, but you guys are my first port of call....!):
    My project is building a new publishing platform, using Open Source software and in such a way that it is easy for others to write modules to plug into it etc. I need some advice on the best technology stack to use for this. I have been asking how to go about choosing and have had two polar opposite pieces of advice! Would you recommend:
    1) Using some of my grant to get professional advice from a consultant with experience in Open Science and publishing projects who will therefore be unbiassed and give me 'the best advice'. or
    2) Finding a trusted software engineer (again with experience in Open Science and publishing projects) whom I am going to employ to actually write to code and let them choose the technology base they are are most comfortable using?
    (PS I'm past the 'quick and dirty prototype' stage as I already have templates from a UX design company - I'm looking for the right technology to build something more permanent)

    Hi everyone! I'm Lindsey Frost Dodson, your program officer for the rest of the award period. I look forward to meeting all of you soon!
    I also wanted to let you know that we're now accepting applications for additional Science Mini-Grants! Can you please share with your networks? https://medium.com/read-write-participate/seeking-projects-at-the-intersection-of-openness-and-science-3f2dd5a1fa00 Thank you!

    Hey @assomaidi_twitter !!! Great to see you here! @/all , Fabienne was one of our mini grant awardees from the last cohort. You can read a little bit about her project to build an open data community in Madagascar here: https://blog.mozilla.org/foundation-archive/mozilla-science/mingrants2ndcohort/

    Happy Monday @/all … hope things are progressing smoothly! Wanted to give you a heads up that we posted a new blogpost today about the experience of a past mini grant awardee and thought you all might like to read it: https://medium.com/read-write-participate/making-dna-sequencing-more-accessible-8b5624a98873

    Hi, and welcome @kipkurui
    Since it's been a bit quiet on here recently, I thought I'd start the conversation off by giving a round-up of where I am with my project, Octopus.
    It's been a very busy couple of months in which I have been following threads of 'you should talk to...' which have inevitably led to me talking to what feels like half the world. The conversations have been great! Nearly everyone has been enormously supportive - including some surprising people such as Cambridge University Press (even though the project I'm working on would undermine their current profit model).
    I've been invited to give talks in a few exciting places, and the first of those resulted in a large organisation signing up to be user-testers for me, and they're now approaching two other big laboratories on my behalf, which is amazing.
    All of this makes me nervous about the technical side! I have got a wonderful technical architect/project manager now who has volunteered to help. I have also pitched the project to a bunch of software engineering students who need to do a summer project. I was recommended that this was a particularly good course and that their work would be at a good level, so I'm now waiting to see whether any contact me! They have 2 weeks to choose their projects and we're now at the start of week 2... I'm nervous about not having heard anything yet!

    I was invited to write a blog for eLife, which I've now done, and I've got an interview coming up for the International Science Council.
    And that's about it. I'd love to hear where everyone else with their projects.
    Stephanie Wright
    @stephwright
    @AlexFreeman_gitlab !!! That’s amazing!!!! Such great progress! And I completely understand the feeling of talking to “half the world”. So many connections and you never know where they will lead. If you have the link for your blog for eLife I’ll happily tweet.
    As for the software engineering students, they may be a group that waits till the last day to finalize. For mini grants we typically see about 2/3 of our applications come in on the last day. You might want to nudge them though, just in case.
    Welcome @kipkurui !!! Great to see you here!

    And yesterday I met with a little team of software engineers from Imperial who did indeed contact me in the end. They are an impressive bunch, all with complementary interests and skills and have already worked together on 2 projects as a team, so I have some optimism! I have a technical architect who is the voice calm experience, and who is completely on top of things. And I've now registered Octopus Publishing as a non-profit business and am almost sorted setting up its separate finances. So today, all seems good. On 15th May I'm talking about it at the European Biomedical Transparency Summit in Paris, and then at the end of the month, over to Boston. I've also had some great chats with Daniela Sarderi of PreReview as we hope to work in complementary ways too.

    Hey, peeps! Can you help publicizing our SciComm training? We think we are not reaching the right groups, people are afraid to apply lol
    There are travel stipends available for professionals from North and Northeast regions of Brazil, but we are considering all requests, actually.
    There are some texts in Portuguese here, ready to copy and paste: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xsV2TtuyDvoNbwgXh0cD95DGiW6hz-fvsX0Dlpjm02s/edit?usp=sharing

    My team of software engineering students need to do their final presentation on Wednesday of the prototype they have been building of the basic functionality of my project, Octopus. It's skeletal, but really getting there now. If anyone on this list has time in the next 24hrs or so to have a quick look at it and send feedback (use the 'Send Feedback' button int he bottom right of the page) that would be hugely appreciated:
    I've just sent them a ton of tweaks, so hopefully it will be improving over the next couple of hours!
    Thank you!
    Stephanie Wright
    @stephwright
    I can send out to the Open Leaders and Fellows lists if you’d like!

    Oh - thank you, yes please
    With caveats that it is only a first early prototype with plenty of missing functionality!

    I will be sure to let them know. They’ve all been there. :)

    Hi everyone - it's nearly crunch time when we have to submit our reports - how is everyone getting on? I'm right up against it with the prototype due to be finished tomorrow (and user-testing to do between then and Sunday night!)
