Because it still does create a local calendar on the device, which other apps can read
So if there's another app which can sync a local calendar to a remote one, that should work (but most sync apps are the other way around -- syncing a remote calendar locally, which sounds like the same thing, but the difference is that they create a new local calendar that syncs, rather than an existing one)

hm hm
Would be nice feature to use existing calendar.

Not really possible
Because simpletask is todo.txt
When the todo.txt file changes remotely, you don't know which new tasks correspond with the old ones
So you've no choice but to delete and recreate everything
Well, actually I take it back, you could keep track of every calendar even ST has created and delete only those

hm yes but I get the point.
Well I am using taskwarrior and thinking about switching to todo.txt. I actually wanted to have some script on my server which woul create events based on some keyword in my task list. At least this should be a bit easier with todo.txt.

Lua scripting is approximately 100% of the reason why I use Simpletask, and ST is maybe 80% of the reason I use todo.txt (the other 20% is being able to do something reasonable with the file in a plain text editor)

Cool. I don't know lua. Well, I will try and see.

You can probably find some examples of things I've done if you search, both in this chat history and in the github issues (try the search, commenter:smichel17 lua)
It's a pretty simple language

Does anyone use Tasker with Simpletask?
mrey
@mrey:tchncs.de
[m]
Does simpletask also support adding a certain time to deadlines? So it's not "due tomorrow", but "due tomorrow, 12:34"
smichel17
@smichel17:matrix.org
[m]
No. It's been discussed and I think there's an open issue about it, though

I'll take a look, thanks!

smichel17: do you use Tasker with Simpletask?
smichel17
@smichel17:matrix.org
[m]
no, I don't use tasker.

@vojta:vojtapolasek.eu
[m]
ok I got it working.

Hello, how often are widgets refreshed?
smichel17
@smichel17:matrix.org

No idea. I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to figure out from the codeā€¦

Hi, anyone using Simpletask with Nextcloud?
How do you solve problem of conflicting files? e.g. you modify some file on the phone and some file on pc at roughly same time?

Although actually I mostly ended up treating the desktop version as read-only

There's that pesky J-word again

What do you mean?

smichel17
@smichel17:matrix.org
[m]
"just"
mrey
@mrey:tchncs.de
[m]
I see
vojta
@vojta:vojtapolasek.eu

That was a nice thing about Taskwarrior.
as it used kinda database for tracking changes in the task list.
smichel17

Most of the time, "just" is a value judgement about how much effort something is and is thus not a very useful word, because everyone has different standards for how much effort is a lot
I've been working to remove it from my vocabulary, except in cases where it actually adds something like, "I didn't mean XYZ, I just meant Z"
mpcjanssen

@mrey diffing the files is not the problem. Making the UI to let the user do something with it is. And that is far outside my definition of "just"

I wonder if it would make more sense to port ST to the browser rather than make a native Linux app.
vojta
@vojta:vojtapolasek.eu
[m]
There is already a different todo.txt app with gui
effitask
But not sure if features are comparable, I can't use it
smichel17
@smichel17:matrix.org
[m]
None that supports ST's lua scripts.
I can and do edit my todo.txt file as plain text, but when I switch to a gnu/linux phone, I am going to want ST or something like it.
It's less about editing the tasks and more about custom filters to display them in different ways, though.

How abou topydo?
I am using it on Linux, it is written in Python and it has several interfaces.

Haven't tried it

I actually use Topydo on Linux and Simpletask on Android.
Syncing with Nextcloud. It works.

@mpcjanssen
@smichel17:matrix.org implementing simpletask in the browser would be an interesting exercise.
