Canvas frame not working: http://i4.piimg.com/afd6a6e54a5c23a7.png
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
this issue will only get fixed when alphaplot move from qwt to qcustomplot .. this will take some time.. lot of work to do :smile:
bbbear2002
@bbbear2002
Could you make this a priority? The publication-ready output, i think, is essential for AlphaPlot. Thank you very much!
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
I started working on it but will take some time to switch.. will have to rewrite major parts of 2Dgraph related stuff which account for more than half of Alphaplot codebase.. so it wont be easy.. give me at-least 1 month +
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
@bbbear2002 I think it is better to use QChart, which is an Qt official module recently released under GPL.. So i will drop QCustomPlot & wait for the stable release (Qt 5.7).. you may have to wait longer for all graph related stuffs to get fixed.. until then i will port the code base of AlphaPlot from Qt4 to Qt5...
bbbear2002
@bbbear2002
Could you estimate the time for transferring?
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
not sure.. porting to qt5 may take around 2 to 3 weeks.. but i have some other commitments in the mean time to finish.. then integrating QtCharts may take even longer ..

Hi @narunlifescience , i saw that Alpha Plot 0.01 build 3 is released on 02/06/2016. Would there be a Mac Binary for this release? Thanks!
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
Hi.. I don't have access to a mac at this point.. there is no much changes except porting of the project explorer.. so you wont see any changes visually.. I suggest you stick with the previous build.. I will provide a mac binary for the next test build (next month)..
bbbear2002
@bbbear2002
Okay. Look forward to it.
bbbear2002
@bbbear2002
Hi @narunlifescience , is the AlphaPlot program abandoned?
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
no.. working on it.. I am just slowing down the development a little bit so that some critical decisions can be made on its development... also I am little busy on other things lately.. The project is very much active & not planning on abandoning it.. :smile:
bbbear2002
@bbbear2002
The newly released SciDAVis 1D14 seems to be the same with 1D9, as some of the issues (i.e. gap in the joint point of X and Y axes) are still not addressed. Would there then be a fix in the next AlphaPlot release?
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
That is an issue related with QWT library.. Hopefully the next release will that.. although I cant tell you precisely when the next release is going to be..
(* will fix that )
bbbear2002
@bbbear2002
Thank you
bbbear2002
@bbbear2002
More than three months has passed by, so... should we wait longer, or there may be a Mac release soon?
I wish i could contribute to this project to accelerate it a little bit, yet my coding ability is quite, quite limited
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
I cant release mac or for that matter any binary soon.. alphaplot is in middle of 2D graph library migration.. so may take a month or two..
if you would like to contribute you can start with small bug fixes.. (you may need some knoledge of c++ though). some simple things you can probably start with are 1) add more probability random distributions 2) enable project explorer drag and drop support etc...

@bbbear2002
Hi @narunlifescience, i have installed QtiPlot via MacPorts. It is great except some minor bugs (i.e. random position of icons, and slow speed when handling large amount of data). The export pdf bug in AlphaPlot and SciDAVis seems not affect QtiPlot, so i guess it is not a Qt4 bug
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
it looks like a QWT5 library bug
bbbear2002
@bbbear2002
The QtiPlot 0.9.8.9 seems export quite good pdf without "little gap" bug. But it supports Retina display not very good, as its icons are randomly positioned
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
any way I am dropping QWT library from alphaplot
bbbear2002
@bbbear2002
Maybe you can start up with the QtiPlot 0.9.8.9 source
I see QtiPlot more complex and comprehensive functional than SciDAVis
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
At this point I can not. There are many reasons for choosing Scidavis as a base fork instead of QtiPlot. In the core of SciDavis and QtiPlot, I think Scidavis is more organised.
bbbear2002
@bbbear2002
Okay, will there be a schedule for the next release?
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
yes there will be but I am dropping QWT library that is a monumental task so I cant tell you how much time it is going to take.
bbbear2002
@bbbear2002
Good for you, wish you get your PhD degree and find a good job
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
Thank you! let me check if I could squeeze in a release next month. If I get enough free time I will be working on Alphaplot.
bbbear2002
@bbbear2002
Good news. Best wishes

@Salamandar
Well I'm there :p
Where are you in the Qt5 port ?
I started it, and appart from the QPrinter part (PostScript support was dropped) (and I discovered the whole printing code is bloated in Qtiplot/Scidavis, that should be cleaned someday) and Qhttp, there's not much "difficult work" for the port
I also saw that Qwt5 does not support Qt5. So… Yeah, I'll finish the Qwt6 port I think ;)
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
well if you are ahead with QWT6 good enough :)
Salamandar
@Salamandar
well it compiles fine now
I just commented some boring thing to fix

Hi, AlphaPlot seems promising but is there any public statement somewhere about this project's relationship with SciDAVis ? No need for gory details, of course : a simple, diplomatic explanation on why the fork happened would help people figure what is going on...
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
recently an article was published in linux pratique edition no 98. Unfortunately that
article is not free
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
This is my answer to your question: First of all scidavis is really old so most of the code added to scidavis will be mostly bugs fixes or attempt to port it to new frameworks and so on. There is a huge community using scidavis so you cant make huge changes to such a software (remember huge changes always introduce bugs :smile: ). On the other hand alphaplot is a fork where I can implement huge changes and experiment just because there is no significant user base yet. I also needed a simple software(not like R or GNU plot) to produce publication quality graphs which scidavis is not very good at. Hope that answers your question :)
fmeynadier
@fmeynadier
Yes, thanks.
And good luck with that, this is quite a huge task !
Arun Narayanankutty
@narunlifescience
yes it is.. looking for some contributors now :)
