Would I get the same issue if the baudrate was too slow?
I started getting the error again at 10,000. I've tried 5,000 and 20,000 and both give me the error consistently

The only thing that was changed is how the Nano is being powered
Could drawing too much power from the Pi cause this?

Powering the Nano and 34 Neopixels at 5V
The Neopixels are drawing about 600-1500mA

Oh, that's a lot. What type of power supply is being used?
The pi itself needs up to 700mA

Using basically a USB phone charger, which I now realize is only supplying 0.85A (I thought it was 2A)
I have the Nano on it's own USB charger thing and it's working better, though I'm still getting the error occasionally

I'm not sure :) I might have had conflicting I2C calls happening too fast. I had some overlapping setIntervals
My really basic test script still works, but it wasn't doing much

@frxnz general rule of thumb: never power anything that draws more than 20mA from the Pi
It’s power supply is notoriously fickle. It’s gotten better with recent revisions, but it’s still not great
Try powering them with an external source and see if that helps

Yea powering the Nano separately and powering the pixels from that seems to be working much better
