@tharnach for me it typically takes 1-2 minutes on a Raspberry Pi 3. Which model of Raspberry Pi are you using?

I was using the RaspPi Zero W
I finally got it all installed after several attempts.
I followed the instructions that also had you update gcc and g++, and install serialport and wiringpi separately, but even then it still took a very long time once it installed successfully.
I upgraded to a newer version of NPM during the process too, so maybe that had something to do with it. The CPU was pegged at 100% the whole time.

Ah yes, npm 5 improves install times dramatically on the Raspberry Pi
And on the RPi Zero W, I would expect it to take 3-5 minutes.

Does the raspi have any built in underclocking when it gets too hot?
is that even a thing for other processors?
Because it got super hot. It's not super important just kind of a thought I had while going through the installation.
Just did a quick google search, apparently that's not a thing :D

That's a good question actually. It's totally a thing, I know both Intel and AMD CPUs have been underclocking when overheating for a long time. I'm not sure if the RPi CPU does that though.
