Are you looking for nextflow clean? Or do you want something that only deletes the dirs generated by a specific process over multiple runs? In the latter case I don't think that's possible.
nextflow help clean
Clean up project cache and work directories
Usage: clean [options] 
  Options:
    -after
       Clean up runs executed after the specified one
    -before
       Clean up runs executed before the specified one
    -but
       Clean up all runs except the specified one
    -n, -dry-run
       Print names of file to be removed without deleting them
       Default: false
    -f, -force
       Force clean command
       Default: false
    -h, -help
       Print the command usage
       Default: false
    -q, -quiet
       Do not print names of files removed
       Default: false

Yes nextflow clean should work

from your experience, do you have a preferred cluster backend technology? if so, why?

Hi Paolo @pditommaso, are you familiar with dgsh? Seems like it might be a middle ground between bash scripts and a full nextflow pipeline.
