So here we are.
This does seem like way less friction for "casual" users who don't want to sign up for Slack and don't plan to chat a lot, and just want to see what's going on

I'm new to gitter as well to slack. At the first glance editing on gitter seems to be similar to github.

Yeah Slack is more mature as a chat client but seems designed around "teams at work" versus potentially-large open source communities

I think the primary benefit is that it's easier for casual folks to get into - rather than going through the weird "get email invite then create account" slack thing
