server is temporarily down - I requested complete deletion of existing Chapters & Title entities, which unfortunately exceeded the daily write operations quota

@NamPNQ test :D
pytaku now has a "go to top" button when viewed on non-mobile devices

(should be back tomorrow afternoon, where the daily quota is reset)

Batoto.net changed their domain to bato.to
I figured this is a good time to upgrade the "stable" pytaku.appspot.com

Page-fit view would be nice
Bùi Thành Nhân
@nhanb
That would require some proper component redesign. Sounds nice though, I'll add it to my to-do list :D

@nhanb
Pytaku v0.4.0 released with vastly improved chapter load speed (especially on the slow batoto) and page-by-page loading.

I think it would be better if you could separate concerns for data objects in SessionStore. I mean make it local variables instead of assigning every datum you have to your store, which could be accessible through the store object.

@nhanb
Not sure with you mean. Could you give an example?

HIhi, this is awesome!! But the past few days I've been encountering "Unexpected server error. Administrators have been notified."
Bùi Thành Nhân
@nhanb
Hi @Jxxxxx , I'm sorry for the late reply. This room's pretty much dead lately so I haven't been checking it regularly.
there are some issues with manga from batoto (server rejects us when too many requests are sent consecutively) and probably mangafox too
I'm currently busy trying to get the hang of my new job, so pytaku improvements have been put on the backseat lately
in the meantime, maybe check if your manga is available on Kissmanga?
I myself use pytaku to read kissmanga daily so it should work smoothly

Hey, just came across pytaku a couple days ago - amazing work, wish you'd made it years ago ;) So easy to get running on appspot...
Assuming that you're still working on Son Of Pytaku, I had a couple of UX thoughts, not even criticism really, just nice-to-have:

  • Side scroll (as opposed to regular old vertical web scroll).
  • "Sticky pages" i.e. swipe to go to the next page, and it stops when it gets there instead of coasting. I'm sure you've used manga reading apps before, so I figure you'll probably know what I mean.
  • Update chapter lists in the "My Series" view to reflect how far a series has been read. If a series has 100 chapters, and you're on chapter 50, it's kind of a bummer to keep seeing chaps 1-6 in the series view.
  • A sort option for individual series view, by chapter number, ascending/descending (currently defaults to descending).

OK, I lied, I have one UX complaint:

  • In the "My Series" view, the "Remove" button is uncomfortably close to the thumbnail for the series. Yes, I've hit it accidentally :D Maybe a confirmation dialog at least?
Bùi Thành Nhân
@nhanb
Whoa I didn't know people still actually used this chat room
@tildebyte Sorry for the way overdue answers, but here they are nonetheless:
Yes I'm still working on Pytaku Jr., thanks for the interest! It's just that I've been pretty distracted lately.
  • Side scroll and sticky pages would definitely be a nice option for certain mobile users, but I plan to implement core features with good old vertical scrolling and decent bookmarking first before getting on with that.
Bùi Thành Nhân
@nhanb
  • It currently behaves exactly how you want (and this is one of the main reasons I wrote Pytaku in the first place :) ). Say when you visit chapter 50, you'll notice that after a few seconds the "Unread" button will turn into "Reading", and scrolling all the way down to the bottom will make it "Read". Now if you go to "My Series" you'll see only chapters starting from either a) the latest "Reading" chapter, or b) one chapter after the latest "Read" chapter. I admit that there's currently a caching bug so you might want to open "My Series" in a new tab to make sure it gets the latest data. This bug won't be in Pytaku Jr. (man I kinda like this name)
  • Sorting should be trivial to implement, but I'm quite surprised that someone actually wants an ascending chapter list to be honest. Sure, I'll add that.
Bùi Thành Nhân
@nhanb
  • "Remove" confirmation dialog? Consider it done!
Also, the new UI will eliminate the "remove" button on "my series" completely, so to remove it you'll need to go to the series' page where there's no reason to mistap the button:

(that's just the mobile mockup btw)

@tildebyte
ooo, handsome.
Having used it for a while, and seeing how chapters update, chapter sort isn't an issue any more since the "short list" on the series bookmarks page updates properly; I guess I wasn't scrolling all the way to the bottom, or I was hitting the caching issue.
Hey, if you have a need for desktop testers, lemme know; I'm hth. I might even be persuaded to do some testing on Safari/iOS ;)
tildebyte
@tildebyte
I suppose I should have mentioned that I managed to spin up an instance of Pytaku for myself, so I can host test builds if needed. It's on a public-facing IP via Bluehost (probably horribly insecure, and which I had to self-sign, as Bluehost charges for SSL certs).
Bùi Thành Nhân
@nhanb
Hmm that's surprising. How did you manage to host a Google App Engine app on a generic VPS such as Bluehost? Also are you sure you don't want to spin up your own Google App Engine instance (as in your-name.appspot.com) for it? I mean it's free with https included and everything.
And of course I'll publish the new app as soon as I've put together something usable so everyone can check it out. The more the merrier! (I personally don't have any iDevice so Safari beta users are especially welcomed :P )
tildebyte
@tildebyte
Yeah, I had trouble phrasing that. It is running on appspot, but the hostname belongs to Bluehost. I set it up using the Custom domains settings of the Developer Console.
...and then the self-signed cert goes into the SSL Certificates section.
Bùi Thành Nhân
@nhanb
Oh I see haha. Glad to see someone actually building their own instance :D

No news, sorry. I've been busy with my day job. I'm reconsidering the technical approach too, but in short, no ETA for now.

@tildebyte
Don't know if you're still monitoring here, but I've opened nhanb/pytaku#9 - I'm having an issue with password reset.
Bùi Thành Nhân
@nhanb
Answered. Do tell me how it goes!
Don't worry about me not seeing Github Issues though. I do have email notifications turned on
Bùi Thành Nhân
@nhanb
At this point http://beta.mangadex.org/ has a very good reader and one of the most comprehensive catalogs out there and has a progress tracker so I guess pytaku isn't as necessary as it was to me. This and the fact that I'm wrestling with life responsibilities means the project is effectively dead.
