@danamlewis @woodtrevor thanks for your answers. I have one pump for Edison with onboard c1110 and one pump for RPi with CareLink. RPi sometimes errors stick.py or cmd.py and never stops getting errors until reboot. Edison has its own error with the installation command sudo npm install -g oref0 saying port is not open. RPi usually works, Edison never. So I ordered a new explorer as mine is an old used one that may have been damaged. And the first explorer I bought new won't even power the edison after wrong polarity power up.

@Aaybob you should reach out to the company that sells the Explorer boards about the one that won't boot up. they might want to change the design to prevent the reversed polarity thing from frying the entire board, and might want you to ship back the dead one so they can see where it failed.

@scottleibrand two protection diodes? I bought a car and deep in the manual it said only use known good usb memory sticks because a faulty stick may destroy the bluetooth capabilities of the car. you'd think if it was that easy to destroy the car's bluetooth they would leave of the feature of being able to see pictures on the screen from a usb memory stick. But no, i destroyed the cars bluetooth.

diabeticgonewild
@diabeticgonewild
Jan 05 2017 01:48
IDK. It's all complicated by severe gastroparesis (not D related) which means that glucose doesn't get absorbed at all for several hours, leading to extended lows. Usually I ingest about 75 grams of carbs for lows—and can end up low for an hour or more. It sucks.
Yeah, I finally decided to test. Time on my meter isn't right though...
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Jan 05 2017 01:54
How exactly does delayed stomach emptying prevent glucose being absorbed directly through the stomach wall?
If you treat lows with something that doesn't require amylase to begin the breakdown process, it doesn't need to get past your stomach
diabeticgonewild
@diabeticgonewild
Jan 05 2017 01:57
Only like ethanol can be absorbed through the stomach wall. Glucose especially is a huge nutrient, and can only be absorbed when the stomach is emptied and is the food is absorbed in the small intestines, primarily.
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Jan 05 2017 01:58
err, that's wrong
diabeticgonewild
@diabeticgonewild
Jan 05 2017 01:58
Other minerals, for example, are absorbed in the small intestines.
Like in that "pink panther book" on diabetes, they even dispute the absorption of glucose on a PURELY oral basis.
But don't be freaked out, the gastroparesis that I have (and other autonomic nervous system problems) are caused by a rare disease—not diabetes.
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Jan 05 2017 02:00
You have said several hundred times that it is not diabetes related, including 10 minutes ago
diabeticgonewild
@diabeticgonewild
Jan 05 2017 02:00
@cjo20 Thanks, my blood sugar is low.
It's not wrong that generally glucose is absorbed in the small intestines. Just look at blogs about severe lows incurred by Symlin. @cjo20

@cjo20 You can dispute this all you want, but a search of "glucose AND digestion" will yield results like this: http://www.biology-innovation.co.uk/pages/human-biology/the-digestive-system/ which state that glucose is primarily absorbed in the small intestine. Go ahead and debate it all you want. Your choice.

Jan 05 2017 02:45
@Aaybob I'd guess it's looking for a module called "node-uuid", when it's been renamed to "uuid". It's a Warning, not an error though. WARNING generally means "Something isn't quite right, but I can still carry on", so it's worth just carrying on anyway and seeing if it works regardless

@cjo20 In the book Insulin-Dependent Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Adults by Ragnar Hanas, M.D. On page 64, the book states that "Sugar must reach the Intestine to be able to be absorbed into the bloodstream so that it can raise the blood glucose level. Glucose cannot be absorbed through the lining of the mouth (oral mucosa) or from the stomach."
diabeticgonewild
@diabeticgonewild
Jan 05 2017 02:49
I have tried oral glucose, desperate several times to raise my blood glucose, have severe gastroparesis. It simply does not work. I have lived with severe gastroparesis and T1D for well over 10 years.
Your arrogance is unbelievable. I cannot believe that you are trying to contest firsthand experience with something that is very difficult to live with--that I have obviously tried to alleviate as soon as possible--with medial conditions that are very difficult to manage in the first place.

I'm not sure how quoting a study where sublingual glucose was effective as a treatment for hypoglycemia is arrogant.
diabeticgonewild
@diabeticgonewild
Jan 05 2017 02:52
@cjo20 If you read that study, they used 2.5 grams of glucose you have got to be kidding me if that would be very effective at raising blood glucose quickly at sub-50 mg/dL blood glucose levels.

@Aaybob I've not used oref0-setup much myself, does it need to be run as root?

Similar issues. Every now and then my explorer/edison gets into the mode where it apparently never can identify the pump. It eventually, usually clears, but I had a 1 hour period where it stayed in that state and at 20 minutes after a reboot is still in that mode. Pump and explorer are about a foot apart.

I've got an early morning commute and it is snowing, so I need to leave pretty early. I will investigate further tomorrow afternoon and run without openaps for the morning. Unless someone has other ideas, my troubleshooting attempts will be 1: rerun oref0.sh, 2: try a different edison (running oref0.sh on it. 3: not sure about this one but thought perhaps I could connect the Ti Stick off of the Raspberry Pi and hook it USB using the same firmware and setting up a symlink to /dev/mmeowlink as in the Raspberry Pi docs - and see if that works (if it does, I presume somehow the Ti chip on the explorer must have gone belly up).
Of course, step 3 there relies on the flaky OTG USB working.

@PieterGit In the original batch of explorer boards there was a problem with one of the ICs that made the board keep rebooting when plugged in to USB. If you cut a specific trace on the board, it stopped the rebooting, but it means that you can't use the board without a battery connected.

To be clear.... If I have 0.0 cob, my iob is showing negative (example -0.7), and my BG is low, that would indicate that I have too much insulin correct? So, if I use the bolus wizard in NS, that negative iob should take away from a bolus amount needed if I'm going to eat?
Dana Lewis

if you’ve been low temped a while, you’ll probably actually need more insulin if you eat

If you have -0.7U of IOB (and your basals were correct) then a 0.7U bolus would neutralize that eventually. But given the timing, your meal spike might be higher than normal.
If your ISF is 40, -0.7U would eventually bring you up 28 mg/dL without food. So if your target is 110 and you're below 82 and flat, you have too much insulin on board still, but above 82 you have too little.

On a completely different note, there was some commentary about the explorer board and WiFi swapping - did a good way of handling that get established?

@tim2000s We are using a method as described here https://github.com/TC2013/edison_wifi to manage WiFi swapping on our Edison/Explorer rigs (all of our Edison rigs actually) and it works well. I know @jasoncalabrese was doing something similar as well. Don't really know if it's necessary because we've never tried without. Switches seamlessly in our experience.

Quick question, got to the part in the walkthrough about pancreabble, if I plan to have a setup running in offline mode(cell phone doesnt have tethering) I will need a pebble watch to view what it is up to, but not to have it work? It would still work but I just wont be able to view it? Is that correct thinking
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 05 2017 19:09
If you have an offline way to get CGM data to the rig, correct.
ejoe132
@ejoe132

@scottleibrand Yes, plan is to just plug cgm into pi.

@scottleibrand does the pebble get info on openaps as follows then when offline: pi-> phone(Btooth)->pebble(Btooth)?

Our loop appears to be working, but the Nightscout OpenAPS pill keeps switching between showing an error/unknown and showing appropriate information. Even when it is showing an error, it shows the information when I mouse over it. The pump pill is showing similar behavior. Does this indicate a problem and, if so, is there any known solution?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 05 2017 20:07
@ejoe132 with Pancreabble? No. That goes direct Pi to Pebble I believe.
If you pair the Pebble with the Pi you can't pair it with the phone.

Jan 05 2017 20:30
@scottleibrand ok, altimately what I want is to be able to monitor the system and be able to turn it to eating soon, or activate temp targets while out as Im not in wifi often nor does the phone tether. So a pebble sounds like my best option, unless I can do such things on the iphone
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 05 2017 20:31
Sounds like you're in development land at this point.
Some folks are working on similar efforts, to run NS on the rig, for example.
Or, you might want to try Bluetooth tethering instead of wifi.

@ejoe132 You need to look at a unix operating system primer. LS is ls is a command to list the contents of the operand. The single user keyboard, some have problems with different characters being coded to the keys. But you can search the keyboard with key strokes and find most special characters.
Aaron Michelson
@Aaybob
Jan 05 2017 20:41
@scottleibrand to test off the internet CGM connection turn off iphone, ssh edison, plug usb micro to micro from/to edison and receiver. Then what?
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 05 2017 20:42
@scottleibrand dont know if iphone does btooth tethering, i just know its offered but sprint wants $30 a month and thats just not in my budget right now. sounds like best would be to get a pebble then
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 05 2017 20:44
@ejoe132 there are much cheaper tethering options than that. Maybe get a cheap android phone with a prepaid data-only plan?
Aaron Michelson
@Aaybob
Jan 05 2017 20:44
sprint is my carrier too. the hotspot is free, use that, its less desirable because it drains phone and edison batteries more quickly, but its a great feature.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 05 2017 20:44
@Aaybob make sure the CGM shows up (no name) in lsusb
Then just watch logs for new data, or run the commands manually.

@Aaybob
Jan 05 2017 20:48
@scottleibrand will do. I have the cable. Still scared to do anything with the edison that just started running. I haven't yet even moved the pump more than an inch away from Eddys'son.
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 05 2017 20:49
@scottleibrand ill have to look into that, but if i can do a pebble from amazon for $60 shipped then not pay anything after that I may do that
@Aaybob I think maybe hotspot is included in yours? I go into settings in mine and dont see anything on hotspot, at the top just has airplane mode, wifi, bluetooth, cellular, then jumps to notifications

@danamlewis @scottleibrand re: the (-)IOB - comments make sense and are helpful - thanks - would the best strategy then be to use eating soon to get addt'l IOB for the meal, bolus as usual and let the pancreas figure out any extra? Alternatively, if insufficient time for eating now to provide much benefit, at least a short pre-bolus to try to hit your Dia-COB timing better?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 05 2017 20:53
@ejoe132 you probably won't be able to enter modes carbs etc. with that solution (just carbs through bolus wizard)

@ejoe132 I will soon need an off internet solution. Is it the understanding that [settings, cellular, (third line- personal hotspot <on,off>)]
but that's not an off line, out of cellular solution. For out of cellular range pebble connect to edison and edison hard wired to cgm receiver.
Aaron Michelson
@Aaybob
Jan 05 2017 21:04
I ran RPi out of cellular range so the hotspot stopped working and data was not recorded from the cgm but the RPi responded and stored its history for to fill in the blanks when later in cellular range, if I remember correctly, my cables were problems though.

@ejoe132

call sprint and see if they have something to offer
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 05 2017 21:13
@ejoe132 the Pebble would still let you see what the loop has been up to, though. So I would recommend doing either that or some form of tethering whenever you can.
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 05 2017 21:14
@Aaybob Ill try that, stopped at store but they told me cheapest was like 3 gigs for $30, which I feel this would use a lot less than 3 gig a month
@scottleibrand ok makes sense. And the setup when in wifi will still report to nightscout?
Aaron Michelson
@Aaybob
Jan 05 2017 21:15
I'm starting a service chat with sprint to ask about tethering but I think that won't help me out of cellular range.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 05 2017 21:16
@ejoe132 Yeah, that's a typical setup. Loop offline when you have to, and upload and download everything when you get online.
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 05 2017 21:17
@scottleibrand so it can upload "old data" to nightscout? say get home from work, get wifi hop on NS and it would potentially be able to show what it was up to from 8-5?
Geoff Aumaugher
@geoffro10
Jan 05 2017 21:27

@Aaybob - oh, okay. I am just going to go ahead and re-run oref0-setup.sh and see what happens, because when I got home and fired up my edison/explorer it was still in the non transmitting mode. and reset_spi_serial.py did not fix it.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 05 2017 22:09
@ejoe132 it will upload old treatments at least. Maybe not old devicestatus. So the regular NS view will be filled in, but you might not be able to scroll back to see all the purple lines and reasons.

Re running oref0-setup.sh did not fix it. I did not enable cron; edited cron to remove previous lines; rebooted; ran openaps use pump mmtune and got the same failure. Tried reset_spi_serial.py and re ran openaps use pump mmtune -- and still no success. Going to try step 2 setting up and running oref0-setup.sh with another edison

That's awesome @fiberfan! My last a1c was also 6.5, just before I started actively looping. I'm really anxious to see what the impact is at my next endo visit in a few months. Even if it didn't go down I'm already certain that my std. dev. will be much lower - way fewer peaks and valleys and a lot more green in NS.

bluetooth tethering
is there a guide for setting that up?
fiberfan
@fiberfan

@woodtrevor Nightscout says I spent 72% of my time between 70 and 150 and estimates an a1c of 6.1. The best part is only 3% of the time below 70.

I'm getting a new error today from the cron log file: raise AckError("ACK is 0 bytes:\n%s" % lib.hexdump(raw))
decocare.errors.AckError: ACK is 0 bytes:
