@cjo20 yes i put the dfu-util in the jubilinux folder but I cant seem to get libusb to download with dfu-util? dont know where to get it so I dont know if thats th problem
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Jan 28 2017 00:02
libusb should be in the same package as dfu-util

@Kdisimone wpa_supplicant goes through the listed networks in order until it finds one that works. oref0-online forces that behaviour if it finds a network connnection is missing.

Jan 28 2017 00:03
@cjo20 There’s that troubleshooting section that deals with this (using a home wifi over hotspot/mifi) and I’m wondering if it will work. I’m coming from a parent perspective of kids being the holders of the devices at school. Anyone using that? Will it work well/not conflict with the supplicant list?
Wifi_Troubleshooting_—_OpenAPS_0_0_0_documentation.png
@tim2000s So it won’t let go of a connection unless it drops. correct?
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Jan 28 2017 00:04
Have the phone set to connect to your home wifi automatically. Then when you get home, the phone will connect to home wifi and if you forget to switch it back it doesn't cost data
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:04
we should get that 8-line one-liner converted to a proper script
@cjo20 I don't think that works with an iPhone
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Jan 28 2017 00:05
and also the mifi
The mifi has a bigger throw than her iphone and is proving useful when she runs track/sports
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Jan 28 2017 00:05
@scottleibrand I think it can use normal wifi as long as there isn't a device connected to the wifi hotspot
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Jan 28 2017 00:05
*sort of
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:06
@cjo20 yeah, but the problem is coming home and the rig still being connected to the hotspot, so the hotspot never turns off and the phone never switches to wifi. looks like that long one-liner tries to pre-empt that and switch if it detects your home wifi
Tim Street
@tim2000s
Jan 28 2017 00:08
@scottleibrand agree. I have to disable any hotspot when I get home if I want the rig to switch to home wifi.
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Jan 28 2017 00:08
That’s been our experience. we can’t shake the hotspot or mifi until it drops on it’s own or is turned off
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:09
@Kdisimone you can test that one-liner you screenshotted, and if it works, see about getting that added to oref0-online or something
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Jan 28 2017 00:10
Gladly. As a followup…is that code something I can use twice? As in look for the school wifi OR the home wifi.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:11
once it's converted over to a proper script, we should be able to make it do the right thing there. I'd rather not complexify further as long as it's a one-liner
Tim Street
@tim2000s
Jan 28 2017 00:12
@cjo20 I'd love the problem to be a wire, but the two batteries, with the same length and layout of wire fit in the case the same way, so there's no difference in physical layout between the two explorer boards. I'll do some manual testing tomorrow morning, but all the fingers are pointing at a Board issue at this point. The rig is now running fine and the only change was to put the other explorer on it. I've another one coming so I'll be able to do a further comparison with that.
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Jan 28 2017 00:12
so that’s a no, right? stick to one wifi network for now? @scottleibrand

first things first, get it working the simple way, and then look at extending it

Jan 28 2017 00:13
@cjo20 I think I may have gotten it, came up and asked to unplug edison, replugged in and it ran a bunch of stuff then said kernal system flash success, then said it had to reboot and not to unplug for 2 minutes, then I tried to use putty but nothing happens, just comes up as a black window, hit enter to wake it up and nothing. What should I try next
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Jan 28 2017 00:18
How long did you leave it?
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 00:21
Its been about ten minutes now...edison feels pretty hot, but not bad just like its on
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Jan 28 2017 00:23
hmm, try turning it off and on?
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 00:24
Just do an unplug and replug?
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Jan 28 2017 00:25
Actually, did you have something displaying in putty before you flashed it?
ejoe132
@ejoe132

No I didnt, opened putty after flashing

Looking for some help with BT Tethering. I've reflashed the Edison multiple times, installed OpenAPS and confirmed 0.1.5, installed the Dev of oref0. Everything progresses just fine until I get to the bluetooth stuff. I get "Can't change local name on hci0: Network is down (100)" Any ideas?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:26
try power on in bluetoothctl?
and make sure you have bluetoothd running
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Jan 28 2017 00:27
@ejoe132 You restart the edison by pressing and holding the power button for several seconds, then leaving it a second or two the, pressing the power button for a second or two
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 00:27
@cjo20 ok replugged in and it came up saying root@edison #. is it looking for "root" there?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:27
that's a regular prompt. you can start typing commands
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 00:28
@cjo20 I didnt even know it had a power button haha
@scottleibrand ok thank you, Ill keep trying to move through the walkthrough

@geoffro10
Jan 28 2017 00:28
Ran bluetoothctl and the power on command. Seemed to work. Quit that and typed bluetoothd. Gave the error "D-Bus setup failed: Name already in use"
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:29
bluetoothd was already running then
Geoff Aumaugher

Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:37
did you run sudo bt-pan client AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF ?
(with your MAC obviously)
Geoff Aumaugher
@geoffro10
Jan 28 2017 00:38
Yep... just went to another command prompt.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:38
that should start up tethering (blue bar on iOS)
ifconfig should show a bnep0 interface
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 00:38
ok im stuck again, got to the multiple wifi networks, input the first commend and brought up a bunch of sqiggle lines and at the bottom saysech/network/interfaces,, so I typed I and hit enter nothing happened hit i and enter again and nothing. any tips?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:39
follow the directions about how to get into insert mode etc.
attention to detail is crucial here. take it slow and make sure you're doing exactly what it says
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 00:40
@scottleibrand i copied in "vi /etc/network/interfaces" then hit i enter and didnt get anything, tried and again and nothing, not sure how to get out of this echo/network page now
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:41
:q! will get you out of vi so you can try again with the correct command
Russell Gardner
@RussGG
Jan 28 2017 00:42
@geoffro10 do you have your hotspot turned on?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:43
yeah, that tripped me up at first. you want to turn the hotspot on, but then quit out of it before anything connects over wifi...
Geoff Aumaugher
@geoffro10
Jan 28 2017 00:43
I'm connected. Shows I have an bnep0 interface.
Hotspot is off but bluetooth tethering is on and showing 1 connection. On my phone that is.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:44
and does bnep0 have an IP address?
iPhone or Android?
Geoff Aumaugher
@geoffro10
Jan 28 2017 00:44
Android and it does NOT have an IP address.
I'm guessing that may be my problem huh?
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 00:45
@scottleibrand got out and back in, so did the vi, then back to the sqiggle lines and at bottom echo/networks/interfaces, hit i once but nothing happened so I hit i again and enter then at bottom it says modified with a percent. but isnt opening a menu
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:48
why are you typing things instead of copying and pasting them?
copy and paste the commands in that you want to run, and copy and paste the output. it should be /etc/ not echo
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 00:52
@scottleibrand ive been copying not typing, ill try coping i and see if i can get it
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:54
ok, not sure where the breakdown is. this part of the docs is very explicit, so you just have to do exactly what it says.
when you get down to it, "uncomment" means "remove the # at the front of the line", and conversely for "comment out" - if that's not explicit enough, a PR might be worthwhile there.
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 00:55
@scottleibrand Maybe it isnt installed right cause i did the vi /etc/network/interfaces then copy "i" in, hit enter and nothing happens, it just hops down a line
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:55
that's correct. i puts you into insert mode, and then pasting / pressing enter adds a new line to the file
Russell Gardner
@RussGG
Jan 28 2017 00:56
@ejoe132 When you hit i nothing happens that just allows you to edit.
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 00:56
@scottleibrand the problem is i cant get to the point to uncomment, im stuck at the point just above that
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:56
did you try moving your cursor with the arrow keys?
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 00:57
yes, i cant move it but there isnt anything there to edit, just every line under my "i" has the sqiggle make then at bottom says I etc/network/interfaces (modified) 2/3 66%
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:58
it should say something starting with "/etc/network/interfaces" at the bottom
is yours missing the / before etc ?
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 00:59
I /etc/network/interfaces [Modified] 2/3 66%
thats all i get at the bottom
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 00:59
hmm, maybe you deleted yours somehow?
:q! to get out of vi and let's do ls -la /etc/network/interfaces to check
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 01:02
@scottleibrand couldnt use :q! to get out so restarted and going back into with putty
had to do normal startup and waiting now
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 01:03
sorry forgot to have you hit Esc first before :q!
Geoff Aumaugher
@geoffro10

Well, enough brain pounding with this bluetooth stuff.... again. LOL It's Friday night... :smile:
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 01:05
@ejoe132 I just updated https://openaps.readthedocs.io/en/latest/docs/walkthrough/phase-0/setup-edison.html#multiple-wifi-networks with an example of what your /etc/network/interfaces file should look like after you're done. if yours got deleted or blanked out somehow, you should be able to paste that in.
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 01:07
@scottleibrand I did the ls -la /etc/network/interfaces and it says root@edisonone:~# ls -la /etc/network/interfaces
ls: /etc/network/interfaces: No such file or directory
root@edisonone:~#
Ill take a look at what you updated
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 01:10
@ejoe132 ok, somehow you lost your /etc/network/interfaces file, so you can do the vi /etc/network/interfaces and paste in the example file I just added.
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 01:10

so is this what i should be looking like? though im getting "no such directory exists. "i"

@ejoe132 your edison has major issues if it's missing all of /etc/network/. I would re-flash it
before you do though, let's check one other thing:
uname -a
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 01:27
@scottleibrand root@edisonone:~# cat /etc/os-release
cat: can't open '/etc/os-release': No such file or directory
root@edisonone:~#
thats what i got running the cat...
ill do the uname -a now
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 01:27
I suspect you're still on yocto then. try uname -a
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Jan 28 2017 01:28
root@edisonone:~# uname -a
Linux edisonone 3.10.17-poky-edison+ #6 SMP PREEMPT Wed Mar 23 21:47:59 EDT 2016 i686 GNU/Linux

edisonone is what i named it
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 01:28
yep. 3.10.17-poky-edison is yocto
so you never actually flashed jubilinux onto this Edison

Question... has anyone noticed their explorer board rig gets... really hot? Is that normal?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 02:02
@apabari when does it get hottest? when charging?
apabari
@apabari
Jan 28 2017 02:03
I haven't really kept track of when it gets hottest... just felt my pocket getting really warm, so pulled it out (it's in a tic tac case right now). So it wasn't charging at that time. It's sitting on the desk next to me now, but still feels a little warmer than I would have expected
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 02:05
FWIW, @mogar just updated the Explorer board design to limit the charge current to 250mA instead of 500mA, which means it will charge a lot cooler, but will take a full 8 hours to charge a dead 2000mAh battery. he also made a few tweaks to try and improve heat dissipation, which might help a bit too. he just placed the order for the first batch with the new design, so those should hit the ERD store soon (I'm guessing a week or two).

but if it's too hot when not charging, I would look at making sure it's better ventilated.
or, if you're inclined to help, there are some things we know we can try to reduce the power consumption of openaps.
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Jan 28 2017 02:06
@apabari "warmer than I would have expected" based on what? What temperature is it? sudo apt-get install lm-sensors then sensors
apabari
@apabari
Jan 28 2017 02:10
maybe ventilation is the problem... I will try a 3D printed case

sooo I test BT on my phone and it was working. The rig is for my son and I just set up BT on his phone. I connected with bluetoothctl and edited cron. it is working but I noticed his phone wont connect to my wifi without dropping the BT connections. I didn’t notice if that was the case on my phone. Should the BT be able to use the phones wifi or will it only use data?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Jan 28 2017 02:20
most phones won't share (for example) your home wifi connection over BT, if that's what you're asking
you need the rig to connect to the home wifi directly, and then drop the BT. I think the scripts set up in the dev branch when you install BT might do that, but maybe not perfectly
Russell Gardner
@RussGG

I've been searching a bit unsuccessfully!

Otherwise one purple line if you have normal OpenAPS predictions enabled in NS

@apabari I think it may be built into the latest NS release. If you look at your NS page where it shows the different time frames for viewing (e.g., 3 hrs, 6 hrs, etc.) you will see this filled by three dots. Click on that and choose the check box for openaps visualization.

Hello! I am a little new to the OpenAPS community. I have run into a small question while trying to set up my edison. I don't exactly know how to change the hostname. The instructions that are found in the docs just seem to confuse me a little.

echo $myedisonhostname > /etc/hostname
sed -i"" "s/localhost$/localhost $myedisonhostname/" /etc/hosts

I assume that you need to change the text in this way

echo $HAL > /etc/hostname
sed -i"" "s/localhost$/localhost $HAL/" /etc/hosts

But that doesn't seem to work.

@Kdisimone wpa_supplicant is only for wifi, not for Bluetooth.
So if you want your rig to connect to a wifi network or hotspot, you add it to wpa_supplicant.conf.

Maybe retrying in a clean radio environment and repeating if it doesn't start right away, and knowing to tap on the iPhone screen. It seems "pair" has to transmit the codes back and forth correctly. After the "pair" there is less trouble. I'm still not sure about how I come back to home wifi. Seemed like this last time I had to reboot because when I just turned hotspot off like I usually do loop didn't update NS or change temp basals.
Dana Lewis

@Kdisimone k. after we re-work through it, I think we might just want to have a long try-all-these-things-when-it-fails list…unless a clear “this specific process” emerges (doubtful)

I think once it just paired on the first try. But all directions state "you may have to try pair and trust several times".

it’s not just pair and trust several times, though - there’s something else that has to be done multiple times to make it work
Aaron Michelson
@Aaybob
Jan 28 2017 05:34
We may not need to delete "My Devices" but a clean environment is needed. Something like shutting off all the communicating devices in your vicinity. But after the "pairing" it can be noisy.

Aaron Michelson

Re-running the flash seems to work because the system stores a partial flash and is able to pick up where it left off. But the communication using bluetooth of 150 digit pairing codes are never repeated. The data transfer has to be complete because next time will be a new set of codes.

OK, last hurtle. The Edison/Explorer CGM loop is working and getting data, the pump loop is working and setting basals, and the Nightscout pills (IOB, COB, OpenAPS, Pump) are all updating, and the logs on the device all reflect that. I can see the CGM data on the device being updated from the Dexcom over USB and decisions are made using that data. I don't see any errors popping up. The only thing not getting shipped to Nightscout is CGM data. Where should I start looking?
I'm running the current OpenAPS/oref0 master branches, BTW
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Jan 28 2017 17:40
@geoffro10 heh, sometimes just takes a bit of time for a rig to get going IMO
@jaylagorio did you have NS setup before? Was it working before? What CGM are you on?
Geoff Aumaugher
@geoffro10
Jan 28 2017 17:42
@danamlewis Yeah, seems to be hanging on now. I am going to make a slight adjustment in my wpa_supplicant file though. I have a setting in there to connect to any open wifi. I think this is causing a problem when it connects to places that require you to click on something in a browser. It'll stay connected even though you can't reach the internet. So, now that bluetooth is running, I can just use that when I'm connected to a wifi system like that through my phone where I had confirmed their terms. Keeping fingers crossed!!!
jaylagorio
@jaylagorio
Jan 28 2017 17:42
Yeah, this is my existing NS setup that already has the CGM graph and the predicted activity via my Pi-based setup (which is off while I work on the Edison setup). It's a Dexcom G4 receiver connected by USB OTG with the trace cut and confirmed working.
When I turn the Edison stuff off and the Pi stuff back on all the graph data populates when that loop starts moving.

Yup, I got this far last night and turned it all off overnight. Same state as now, and I did try rebooting today.
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Jan 28 2017 17:46
If you unplug CGM, does it start uploading CGM again (is it a share)?
Or does it back upload CGM data?
jaylagorio
@jaylagorio
Jan 28 2017 17:47
Not sure I understand the question - the CGM is a Share, but it's not connected via BT. I'll unplug and let it run for a sec to see if CGM data goes up.
Dana Lewis

I think it’s trace related, but not sure what to test next. but NS is working since your OpenAPS pill is filled, rig is looping, etc.
jaylagorio
@jaylagorio
Jan 28 2017 17:53
I don't know that it's trace related. The CGM loop doesn't have errors and the CGM real and prediction data is showing up in the loop log. Since I cut the trace I haven't had an openaps use cgm command failure.

Back when I redid my NS server I noticed there were problems with my old rig getting new data in there until I manually uploaded some data, but that was with an empty Nighscout and a loop that had been running reliably.
What's the newest way to do a manual upload? I think the last time around I did something with the upload-recent-entries? Is there an oref0 script I can point at my server and the CGM JSON?

I've used both for serial connection on my windows box so they checkout.
I may just have to plug replug for a bit I guess

For those of you who've done the trace cut for USB OTG reliability: have any of you tried re-flashing the Edison since doing so? I'm not able to see the Edison over the trace-cut Explorer board's OTG port, and therefore can't get it to re-flash. Wondering if that's an inevitable side-effect of the trace cut, or something specific to my setup. If you'd like to test without re-flashing, you can plug the board in to your Mac using the OTG port, and then reboot or unplug it, and you should get the Disk Not Ejected Properly warning if OTG is working. If you've done the trace cut, can you give that a try for me?

I have not tried reflashing since doing that - if it was behaving as expected would I be able to see it as a disk when rebooting the Edison at an SSH session?

yes, if your USB cabled is plugged into OTG while doing so, it should show up as a disk and then complain when it's rebooted

Morgan explained the following to me: "The wrong part was used for the OTG power switch, so when you plug in OTG it turns power off and not on. Straightforward to fix, but a bit tough to implement a fix for everyone's current board. You could either replace the part or do the trace cut, and either would work." This leads me to believe that we've irreversibly made it so you can't flash it.
Since we've reversed the way the power works by cutting the trace
  1. Edison/Explorer with Lipo already powered on and logged into SSH, connecting OTG port to PC USB
  2. shutdown -r now over SSH
  3. Absolutely no movement of any kind in Device Management, not even a quick change

Morgan said he's gonna check the new boards with the correct part and see if they have the same issue. But sounds like we don't want to be encouraging anyone to do the trace cut unless they have a second Explorer board, base block, or breakout board available in case they need to re-flash the Edison.

@scottleibrand Yesterday you gave me hope with my Edison, which I am trying to flash for several nights. I guess I might have found the reason for my trouble:
I tried to use cygwin using the video offered by "Diabeticgonewild" on youtube.
Here the end of the "flash.log"-file and the next prompt line.
The problem is, that my windows user name has got a space in it. My windows user name is "local user" (with space). And the link end with "local". It seems to be cutted.

FINALLY!!!! I figured out why my bluetooth would not connect after rebooting. I had an entry in my wpa_supplicant.conf file that would connect to any open wifi. Well, there must have been one close to my house and every time it connected, even with no internet, it would kick off the bluetooth. As soon as I removed that entry, it picked up the bluetooth on my phone and is working great so far.

@danamlewis that's interesting, myself I just always write the parameters the same time I run oref0-setup.sh,
Luis Betancourt
@betluis
Jan 28 2017 23:03
1- Edison not connected to charger, SSH active
(edison not near the pump)
2.- connect the rig to a portable battery
katie disimone
@Kdisimone

@danamlewis did you just peek over my shoulder? I was just copying and pasting that line to save for later.
Luis Betancourt
@betluis
Jan 28 2017 23:04
3.- get the rig connected to the portable battery (as charger) then get closer to the pump. next SSH control goes off... in other words when charging the rig in proximity to the pump SSH goes off
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Jan 28 2017 23:05
@Kdisimone it was totally a 2am “I’m too tired to do anymore but tomorrow I need to fix the docs to remind people…” turned into a “huh, I bet we could automate that..” :) :D so I tried it! let me know how it goes

Luis Betancourt

Scott Leibrand

Jan 28 2017 23:10

away meaning for instance the pump is upstairs I am downstairs
Dana Lewis

yes I have tried that, charging from both, a battery or the wall. both result in SSH disconnected
but only when in proximity to the pump

Jan 28 2017 23:11
that sounds like very odd RF voodoo

have you tried hotspotting it to your phone vs. home wifi?

@danamlewis @scottleibrand SSH it is connected now and charging from a portable battery (not the wall) and using wifi... not sure what caused the change, I'll try to recognize what the issue is and if I do I'll let you know... I've been dealing with this for two days now
