running openvpn and setting it up to work on boot is reasonably easy

@scottleibrand Ok, I’ve read the entire page. (And I downloaded the app for the iPhone because that looks like it will be handy) but I still cannot access my Edison via computer. I found the IP address through if config, but not sure what to do with it. I’m guessing I’m missing the obvious…

@danamlewis If only I were surrounded by “native speakers” And I mean zero criticism. I just mean that if I had someone nearby, I feel like I’d get it faster. I struggle with even how to articulate where I’m having trouble…
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Feb 03 2017 01:10
@hilarykoch I'm not native, either. I think you're doing well - it helps to say what you're trying to do, what you think you did, what the error is, etc.
(And also - this is absolutely the hardest part. Once you get flashed, it's downhill.)

Paul Tinson

Feb 03 2017 01:26
@Kdisimone you dont need to trash the whole file, just the entry for that host.
you can also just type “> /path/to/your/.sshfile

Question about AMA. “If you enter carbs reliably…” I’m not sure I understand what enter reliably means. We always enter carbs. Does it mean accurately?

Don’t think I’m there yet, but… At what point in the setup should I turn off Loop? I guess at what point does OpenAPS become closed.
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Feb 03 2017 01:49
After you run the setup script and say yes to scheduling in cron
You could leave Loop running, or switch it to Open Loop, or turn it off depending on if you want to watch side by side for a while

@hilarykoch blue basal render too?
hilarykoch
@hilarykoch
Feb 03 2017 02:36
Yes.. I mean, there is a temp basal. It seems low given he’s running high. It IS higher than his regular basal. So sit tight and wait? Also, if I want to go between openAPS and Loop. How do I turn off/on OpenAPS?
@danamlewis
Matt Walker
@walker0
Feb 03 2017 02:40
@hilarykoch by shutting down the edison. Power button or sending a shutdown command both work. Also make sure everything in your preferences is the way you want if you aren't seeing the temps you expect.

Hi all, have used OpenAPS for two nights now, and seems to be doing what it should be :-) but I can't seem to get the sensor and actual BGL's to be anywhere close to each other, and wondered if anyone had had a similar issue. Ie Pump Sensor (and NS) will say about 9.6, and finger test will be 15 or 17.. and I test, correct, calibrate, but it still doesn't match up. But during the day, its seems to be ok.. (I know this isn't the right place to discuss, but really just curious about if anything in OpenAPS would be affecting this (or if anyone else has had it)..
hilarykoch
@hilarykoch
Feb 03 2017 02:41
@danamlewis Does it go by preferences in pump or NS?
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Feb 03 2017 02:41
@hilarykoch you can also comment out your cron
It goes by pump targets etc but also the preferences file
See phase 3

@coolestkidsever which CGM?
Sacha M
@coolestkidsever
Feb 03 2017 02:42
Medtronic/Enlite
which we've been using for a few years now, and I know it gets wonky, but it seems more so the last two nights running OpenAPS (weird, i know)
hilarykoch
@hilarykoch
Feb 03 2017 02:47
@danamlewis I was wrong. It isnt’ doing anything above regular basal.
I’m going to have to call it quits in a minute. But I’ll do some reading on troubleshooting and give it another go.
Read that before you quit ;)

@danamlewis I guess what I’m wondering, is nothing looks different. How do I know what directory I am in.
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Feb 03 2017 03:57
@hilarykoch you can ls to show what's in your directory, or look to the left of the prompt to know where you are
hilarykoch
@hilarykoch
Feb 03 2017 03:58
root@ubilinux:~# is what I see @danamlewis
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Feb 03 2017 03:59
Do ls then
And that should help you see where you want to cd next to
If you did cd <myopenaps> that means do your myopenaps directory name without the < > things
hilarykoch
@hilarykoch
Feb 03 2017 04:01
Ok. Think that’s the problem. And “myopenaps”… would I have changed that name?
“ls” ?
OK. it was the <> things! Goodness. I should throw in the towel!

"input"
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Feb 03 2017 04:10
Yes. Most people I'd say start at 0, but since you've already been looping, you might want to start with something like 2x basal or something until you read up on more about maxiob and the other safety settings.

You don't have to give a Dexcom serial. Just tell it G5

Feb 03 2017 05:53
Anyone have any ideas? My openaps has been working great (explorer/edison). Heroku for ns (moved over from azure a month ago), g5 sensor, hotspot when out. This morning, my openaps and pump pillbox are not working on nightscout. I haven’t changed anything. It’s all continuing to work though: basals are updating on ns, glucose info is there, pump carbs/dosages are all showing on ns etc. I’m able to connect on hotspot when I’m out too. There’s nothing in the openaps or pump pill box. Pump logs all look fine, glucose logs say AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute ‘iter_records’
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 05:56
you're not plugging in the G5 receiver to the rig, are you? if not, then AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute ‘iter_records’ is exactly what you'd expect, and isn't a problem: it will still loop off of BG from NS, so that part is unrelated to the pill problem
sefish99
@sefish99
Feb 03 2017 05:57
yeah no i’m pulling everything from ns
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 05:57
most likely the problem is due to some sort of bad record in your devicestatus collection. I would look at the nightscout admin page to see if there's anything obvious there, and if not, go take a closer look at the devicestatus API (https://yournightscout.herokuapp.com/api/v1/devicestatus.json) or at mLab to see if you can figure out what's up there

Are there any concerns with having multiple APS rigs active? Will they effectively stomp on each others' actions?
Matthias
@ceben80
Feb 03 2017 09:55
@jmcrawford multiple active rigs are running fine without any interferences, the oref0-setupis well designed for that :wink:
Matt Walker
@walker0
Feb 03 2017 09:55
@jmcrawford no they are make sure the other is done communicating with the pump before doing any Comms. You will end up with temps set more frequently but that is fine as long as you keep the rigs in line with each other in terms of settings.

Just trying to download xdrip+ app. Am I not able to have this as well as xdrip on my phone? It want to update existing app which I don't have on my phone!
Matthias
@ceben80
Feb 03 2017 12:21
@joannestevens no that' not feasible, but you're able to export the DB (xdrip) and import the DB on xdrip+, that should normally work
but same features are only available in the xdrip+ nightly but possibly not so stable, but anyway I am running always on nightly versions

@all - sorry for offtopic here in terms of xdrip+ :smile:

here the URL for nightly versions

edison stuck in a 'Have you got the right port/device ...' endless loop. Can't remember how to invoke mmtune from the CLI. I know to first do a 'killall -g openaps', but what is the correct verbiage for invoking mmtune
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Feb 03 2017 14:32
openaps use pump mmtune I think, or openaps report invoke /path/to/mmtune.json
glenrob1940
@glenrob1940
Feb 03 2017 14:34
Those get verbiage about parameters and/or first do an openaps init and then messages about parameters. I'll keep playing with this
It always gets well if I reboot
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Feb 03 2017 14:35
you're not in the right directory
glenrob1940
@glenrob1940
Feb 03 2017 14:42
Right. thanks forgot to change to ~/myopenaps. After invoking 'openaps use pump mmtune' I still got the /Have you got the right...' message. Not sure what is going on with my edison/explorer. I did a fresh oref0 setup yesterday and things ran fine for about 10 hours and then things got screwed up because of a low battery voltage on the pump. I replaced the pump battery and rebooted the edison. Everything worked okay for about 2 hours and then I got into the aforementioned loop. Physically the pump is less than 2 feet from the edison/explorer.
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Feb 03 2017 14:42
tried restarting the edison?
glenrob1940
@glenrob1940
Feb 03 2017 14:43
Yes, 'sudo /sbin/shutdown -r now' fixes things for about 20 minutes or so and then I get into the comms issue
Should I try reflashing the Ti chip
<whine mode on> this is frustrating. My rPi rig runs solid as a rock. <whine ode off>
glenrob1940
@glenrob1940
Feb 03 2017 14:51
This time after a reboot, it failed on the initial loop (according to the pump log) so I will try reflashing the Ti chip next
glenrob1940
@glenrob1940
Feb 03 2017 15:01
As a backup, I will solder in a TI chip on my Intel Edison Breakout Board and compare it to the Edison/Eplorer rig running the same oref0 setup stuff
glenrob1940
@glenrob1940
Feb 03 2017 15:10
Re comms issue, I fired up my rPi at approximately the same distance (3 feet) between the Pi and my 722 pump. The first pass in the log had the following for mmtune: 'mmtune: "916.660", 5, -54 Listening:'
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Feb 03 2017 15:12
are you running it as root on the edison?
glenrob1940
@glenrob1940
Feb 03 2017 15:13
Yes, I always ssh in as root. never as edison
glenrob1940
@glenrob1940
Feb 03 2017 15:19
@cjo20 Just in case, it is a problem with the Explorer board and/or the Ti chip on it. Would it be worth a try using a USB Ti chip and set it up instead of /dev/spidev5.1 and see how that works
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Feb 03 2017 15:19
You could give it a go if you want
glenrob1940
@glenrob1940
Feb 03 2017 15:20
ok I will try that later today
My guess is that I will need to cut the trace for OTG. Probably not a big deal because I can always flash the Edison if needed on my Intel breakout board.
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Feb 03 2017 15:24
I don't think the OTG trace should have anything to do with the C1110 on-board
glenrob1940
@glenrob1940
Feb 03 2017 15:45
I agree, I think I need to cut the trace if I want to try using a USB c1110 on the edison/explorer rig instead of the on-board C1110
On second thought, will cutting the trace disable re-flashing the on-board C1110
Chris Oattes
@cjo20
Feb 03 2017 15:55
I don't think you need to cut traces. give connecting via USB a go first.
glenrob1940
@glenrob1940
Feb 03 2017 15:57
Okay, I will try, OTG has been flaky on my board in the past - sometimes rock solid and other times inoperative - perhaps the tides in the Bay of Fundy will be in my favor today
Long term, perhaps I should order another explorer board - they are about the same price has the cc1111emk868-915 from Ti or Mouser and I could probably use the current edison/explorer for a NAS instead of openAPS. My guess is I have one of the flakier rev B boards for comms

FYI. I figured out why I had to reinstall oref0 once a week ago. Turns out that 10v charger works for awhile and then towards end of charge cycle it must cause a battery temp error that reboot won't solve (at least I saw a battery temp error roll by pretty fast during the reboot shutdown). Reboot didn't fix it. Reran script (thanks @danamlewis for that little new line) and problem gone.

I've only accidentally plugged it into that larger charger twice. Both times same results. Now to move them somewhere else so I don't do it on accident a third time.

It had kept cycling in the cron. Never made it to the rsgby parts...(or whatever the right spelling is)

Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 19:08
@Kdisimone any device that actually applies 10 volts to a USB connection is way out of spec and would trigger an immediate safety recall from the manufacturer. I don't know of any way for an external USB charger to dictate the amount of current the battery gets: that is controlled by the on-board charging circuit on the Explorer board.
@dramageek did you specify --btpan= or --btmac= ?
if you did the former, it wouldn't have recognized it and never would have installed bluetooth
so you'd need to re-run with the correct option
Andy Sharrow
@dramageek
Feb 03 2017 19:11
sorry, yeah it was btmac. It shows up correctly in the cron entry.
I did have the same version of bluez already installed from trying to tether a few weeks ago, so oref0-setup doesn't install it.
Still, with the cron entries I assume that that part is going correctly.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 19:13
@peterfulvi looks like your gather alias got a weird angled " mark instead of a normal one somehow.
@dramageek if you had previously tried to tether on this rig and it's not working with the new directions, I would try re-flashing. we had the same issue and never did figure out how to fix it short of a re-flash.
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Feb 03 2017 19:13
@scottleibrand sorry. Mistyped in my haze. It's the 12w (5.2v) iPad charging block specifically that I was referencing.
It's caused the failure twice.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 19:14
@dramageek but re-flashing worked reliably on all four rigs
@Kdisimone you can check the rig temperature by doing apt-get install lm-sensors and then sensors
I'm reluctant to blame the 12w charger, since the actual wattage drawn by the rig should be limited by the Explorer board, not the charger.
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Feb 03 2017 19:16
By the time I got to it, the rig was cold as ice and hadn't looped for over an hour.
Also noticed the "other" two lights on board were dimly lit.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 19:16
did they stay dimly lit after a reboot?
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Feb 03 2017 19:16
Maybe the board isn't limiting like it should?
Yes. After reboot still lit
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 19:17
ok, then you need to re-flash the cc1110 with ccprog
Andy Sharrow
@dramageek
Feb 03 2017 19:17
@scottleibrand K, I'll give that a shot later tonight. We're taking the kids to a show tonight, so was trying to get BT going rather than hotspotting the whole time.

Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 19:17
nevermind on the reflash then. maybe just needed to do an mmtune to reset_spi_serial
@dramageek yeah, it's really nice once you get it working. :)
Andy Sharrow
@dramageek
Feb 03 2017 19:18
@Kdisimone did you do a reboot, or a full halt? I've seen mine do that once or twice, and so far a halt will fix it when a reboot won't.
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Feb 03 2017 19:18
I think the first time I did a mmtune and it didn't work. So this time I jumped that stop.
Reboot. Didn't know about half.
Halt
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 19:19
re: not limiting like it should: the newer explorer boards are going to be limited to 250mA instead of 500mA, so it'll take about 8 hours to fully charge a dead 2000mAh battery
several people have reported their rigs getting too hot during charging with the 500mA limit
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Feb 03 2017 19:19
When this happens the upbatt pill disappears from NS.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 19:19
as a workaround, you can make sure that the Explorer is well ventilated during charging (maybe open the case)
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Feb 03 2017 19:20
After finally getting it working again, upbatt pill comes back and battery is fully charged
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 19:21
sounds like the Edison is completely shutting down to protect itself, while the charger circuit keeps cranking power into the battery
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Feb 03 2017 19:21
Super ventilated because I read those earlier posts about the temp issues. I did monitor charging temps for awhile ago and had no problems. It just seems to be that charger so far
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 19:21
next time you can run sensors when you start charging, and see if it gets hotter on that higher-wattage charger
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Feb 03 2017 19:21
Yes @scottleibrand that's exactly what seems to happen
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 19:21

katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Feb 03 2017 19:21
Yup.
We plugged it in at about 10pm, failed at about 4am. Was pretty drained when we started charging. (2500mah)
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 19:23
not sure if/how your lower-wattage charger could actually be the limiting factor... most chargers can do at least 1000mA at 5V, so that would be double the 500mA at 4V that the Explorer is using...

any idea where you got that line from?
somewhere in the docs probably?
fixed
peterfulvi
@peterfulvi
Feb 03 2017 20:10
So what shouldi do
It was when i turned off certain alias commands
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 20:11
you can just run the corrected line if you want
openaps alias add gather '! bash -c "(openaps monitor-pump || openaps monitor-pump) 2>/dev/null >/dev/null && echo refreshed pumphistory || (echo unable to refresh pumphistory; exit 1) 2>/dev/null"'
you're using a 512?

@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 20:36
no need to reboot
just run it and then confirm with openaps alias show gather that it changed
slight chance you might need to stop your cron or do it multiple times to get it to stick, if something else is updating the openaps.ini at the same time

I am currently sourcing my openAPS compatible pump (should be arriving this weekend), Edison, Explorer board, and battery. The production and dev documentation provides instruction for setting up the rig using a Pi, Windows, and Mac. Where would I find setup instructions for using my debian based linux laptop? I like to think I can follow directions pretty well, but...
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 21:05
that should be pretty similar to the Pi, but no guarantees: no one has actually tried that yet AFAIK
you might have enough RAM to skip the swap space stuff
hilarykoch
@hilarykoch
Feb 03 2017 21:20
I’m trying to setup Bluetooth. Following the directions here. Is the first step this (with the MAC address from my phone)?? cd && ~/src/oref0/bin/oref0-setup.sh --btmac=AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Feb 03 2017 21:20
yes, mac address of phone
hilarykoch
@hilarykoch
Feb 03 2017 21:20
If so, it looks like it is trying to take me through the interactive setup again...
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 21:20
it's best if you add that --btmac=AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF to the end of your existing command from the runagain
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Feb 03 2017 21:21
yes but it will ask you an additonal question about the MAC address this time
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 03 2017 21:21
(or from your bash history) to avoid interactive
history | grep oref0-setup should find the last run, so you can copy and paste and add the new one
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Feb 03 2017 21:25
@scottleibrand that reminds me…when i ran that bash runagain script this morning…I dont’ think it included the —btmac part. But when i ran bluetoothcntl, it still listed the iPhone as a paired device. So, just confirming…that rerun script does NOT need the —btmac if it was already run and paired once?
hilarykoch
@hilarykoch
Feb 03 2017 21:28
@scottleibrand @Kdisimone Still not getting it. Did you asked, but isn’t that line essentially what I had above? I’m missing something here… If I type it in, it looks like I’m going through the entire setup again, asking for pump SN
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Feb 03 2017 21:29
It should ask an additional question in there about whether you want to pair a device or phone through BLE
and then it will ask you for the MAC address of it
hilarykoch
@hilarykoch
Feb 03 2017 21:29
ok. hang on. DO I put ALL of this in one line? or are these two commands? cd && ~/src/oref0/bin/oref0-setup.sh --btmac=AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF

replace the AA:bb: stuff with your phone’s BT MAC
Andy Sharrow
@dramageek
Feb 03 2017 21:31
@Kdisimone @scottleibrand Yeah, I mentioned that earlier with my other BT problems. Even if you add it in manually to the oref0-runagain, it gets re-written and taken out when the setup completes. It doesn't mention it on the pre-install summary either.
hilarykoch
@hilarykoch
Feb 03 2017 21:31

katie disimone
@Kdisimone

Andy Sharrow
@dramageek
Feb 03 2017 21:33
@hilarykoch If you end up doing this multiple times, you can nano oref0-runagain.sh and add it to the end of the line, quit & save, then just bash oref0-runagain.sh. It won't re-ask you the questions then.

@Kdisimone We settled on me re-flashing later tonight. Probably something that got set when I was trying to tether a few weeks back that needs to be cleared out.
PRs welcome if there's a better place for this in the docs
(And/or pr a link/reference to this in BT page)

http://openaps.readthedocs.io/en/latest/docs/walkthrough/phase-2/troubleshoot-oref0-setup.html#re-run-the-script-again I have a question about this…”as long as you name IT something different” What IT is that? I don’t see where I name the script.

Ok. got it.
Thanks @danamlewis and @scottleibrand I’m really struggling with just getting it all setup. Not quite sure what to recommend in terms of PRs until I understand what it is I’m doing. In this case, I just didn’t expect the setup questions again, so I assumed I did something wrong.

@Kdisimone it = setup script
The run again file is created automatically by running the setup script

I guess I’m confused where the name is that I would need to change. Thus far I simply reran the script and didn’t change anything. it seems to have worked fine. That’s what has me confused.

@Kdisimone the name of your openaps folder, each one of those is essentially its own seperate instance of openaps. You can have multiple by naming them different things and commenting out what you don't want in cron

My rig just stopped connecting to the pump. I've rebooted twice. No go. Any ideas?

Getting the bits together for a portable rig - any advice on the low power vs standard edison (option 1 v option 2 in the docs)? Leaning towards the low power version but keen to know if there's a consensus among the group.

@danamlewis

we have no evidence that there’s any difference between different edison models

I bolused for dinner through Bolus Wizard. 40 carbs. NS COB shows 4. OpenAPS shows 0. I double checked bolus history and it does show 40 carbs. (I did not enter a BG)

hilarykoch
@hilarykoch
Feb 03 2017 23:18
NS says it is looping and it has enacted a basal a bit higher than his regular setting
Wait. IT isn’t looping. 14 minutes ago….

Question for newbie. I'm on step 1-3 on Katie's cheat sheet trying to flash brand new Edison board. I get this error " warning: gnu-geopt is a keg only and another version is linked to opt. "
Then when I try start Edison I get " cannot exec. Error

@kws1969 the gnu-geopt thing is a warning, not an error. you can ignore that I believe
we'll need more details on the other one. can you copy and paste exactly what it's saying?
