@scottleibrand Im getting this message when running ifu wlan0 root@edisonone:~# ifup wlan0
wpa_supplicant: /sbin/wpa_supplicant daemon failed to start
run-parts: /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/wpasupplicant exited with return code 1

Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 00:02
that usually means you have a syntax error in your wpa_supplicant.conf
want to paste it here with the password changed? or PM it to me...
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 00:04
@scottleibrand I have no problem pasting it here, you want to see the wpa_supplicant.conf page?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 00:05
yeah
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 00:06
@scottleibrand Ok heres what I have

interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto usb0
iface usb0 inet static
address 192.168.2.15
netmask 255.255.255.0

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

# For WEP
#wireless-essid Emutex
#wireless-mode Managed
#wireless-key s:password

And the following 4 lines are for when using hostapd...

auto wlan0

iface wlan0 inet static

address 192.168.42.1

netmask 255.255.255.0

"/etc/network/interfaces" 23L, 501C 1,0-1

Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 00:06
that's your /etc/network/interfaces file
the problem is probably the /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf one
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 00:07
@scottleibrand Thats the input I want entered under "auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp"
?right?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 00:08
there are two files you need to edit. I'm talking about the output of cat /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
(which you created by doing vi /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf)
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 00:10
@scottleibrand The second string there is the one I entered to get into the screen to insert my wifi info? Is that the page you want me to show?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 00:10
sure. or just cat /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf now to see it without editing
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 00:12
@scottleibrand root@edisonone:~# cat /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
network={
ssid=RR_Wireless
psk=123RRLocal321
}}
Thats what I have
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 00:13
you have an extra }
remove that and it might work.
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 00:15
@scottleibrand Ok Ill give it a shot
@scottleibrand Still giving me the same error, Im sure its the correct network name and password, Ive tried logging in that way with my cell phone and works
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 00:24
Maybe put " around the network name and password (immediately after the = on each line)
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 00:29
@scottleibrand Alright Ill try that

Feb 11 2017 00:35
@scottleibrand Awesome thank you so much. Haha got to I can ssh it now but now says my password is wrong, looks like Ill have to serial back in and re set up password
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 00:41
Make sure you do both of them, per he directions, or someone on your wifi can log in with the default password and cause mischief.
Dunno why I always miss the t in "the"
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 00:45
@scottleibrand I think I got it, just settingup for office wifi right now and plan on tethering dexcom. Once I get it going think im gonna try to buy wifi tethering for phone so I can have it work everywhere
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 00:55
@scottleibrand Edit (with nano or vi) /etc/logrotate.conf and set the log rotation to daily from weekly and enable log compression by removing the hash on the #compress line, to reduce the probability of running out of disk space
so im at this point, is it saying to just type "nano" to get into this?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 00:56
add the file name after nano, like you did with vi and cat earlier.
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 00:57
@scottleibrand so "nano/etc/logrotate.conf"? just dont wanna mess anything up, farthest ive gotten on edison, had a rpi going a few weeks ago and messed something up but its battery only would go 2 hours so been trying to gget this going
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 00:58
Put a space between them, like you did before
You might also want to do a quick Linux tutorial so you understand what you're doing here.

Hi y'all trying to flash a new edison using these instructions ./flashall.sh didn't complete properly. Now we can't get the edison command prompt to come up. Any ideas?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 01:02
Get your console (UART) connection working (black screen maybe) and then hold down the little black power button to turn the Edison off and back on. You should see it boot up.
@ELUTE improve it how?
Kate Farnsworth
@ELUTE

Are you using Bluetooth tethering or just wifi hotspot?
chookchook1
@chookchook1

Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 01:06
@ELUTE that is odd. We should probably do a test and then look at /var/log/openaps/network.log to see what it's doing.
You can use less to see the whole file, and scroll up/down to find the time of interest.
chookchook1

@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 01:36
@danamlewis so it asked me to hit enter to reboot, I hit enter then putty said software aborted connection, does this mean im ready to watch the logs?
@ejoe132 and ive just done everything tonight so i should be all up to date
chookchook1
@chookchook1
Feb 11 2017 01:38
thanks @danamlewis we've been following the troubleshooting guide - it finally seems to be working now :smile: I couldn't run flashall.sh as sudo because of a homebrew error. Didn't need sudo in the end anyway.
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 01:41
so ive been able to watch the log, unfortunately pump is home and im at work :/ but trying to finish all I can here then go home and observe for the night, but will it mess anything up if I go and add a wifi connection now? also do I just leave the password area blank if there is no password?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 01:45
no you have to do something different for no password
network={
        ssid="ARIN MEETING"
        key_mgmt=NONE
}
or if you want it to connect to any open wifi:
network={
        key_mgmt=NONE
        priority=-999
}
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 01:49
@scottleibrand ok so second one should jump on any open networks?
Thats what i need for school
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 01:51
yes. some people don't like that because it can get "stuck" on captive portal wifi that isn't fully open (requires a click-through)
if you set up bluetooth tethering, it has an ability to turn off wifi if that happens until you shut off bluetooth again
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 01:51
@scottleibrand oh ok, maybe ill just enter it then
@scottleibrand any idea why im getting root@al1:~# preferences.json
-bash: preferences.json: command not found
when trying to set my settings for maxiob, basal . etc
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 02:02
because you're trying to execute a data file
the first thing you type is always an executable command. usually the second thing is a data file or some sort of input to that command
so in this case, the command would need to be something like nano, followed by the file you're trying to edit with nano
this is the kind of thing you'd learn (much more comprehensively) from a Linux tutorial
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 02:05
@scottleibrand ok, so this has different commands than on my rpi? on that i just did preferences.json but on edison(lynux?) i need nano preferences.json?
@scottleibrand it opened a file like it should but there is nothing there? perhaps I missed something
ejoe132
@ejoe132

@ELUTE, I've found the iPhone wifi and BT connections to be horribly inconsistent. I've an older Android handset that I use for xDrip+ that manages bt/wifi switches much better. I think the issue is on the Apple side.

Hi guys. How does CSF in Autotune relate to Carb Activity in the Profile for Nightscout? Or are they not related at all, and this is an extra parameter we are tracking? Autotune calculated a 5.72 mg/dL CSF for me, my calculated CSF from my pump profile is 4.33 mg/dL and my Carb Activity in my Nightscout Profile is 24 g/hr. Thanks
Terri Lyman
@tatigger
Feb 11 2017 02:43
Also, what syntax would I use to run autotune on specific days, say 2/3, 2/4, 2/5 and 2/7. That way I could eliminate a day I know not to track - like I was sick all day, whatever. I know how to do through today, and I know how to do a continuous range. Thanks

@scottleibrand @ceben80 A powertop --auto-tune brings my Edison down from ~60mA to 15-35 depending on what happens on WiFi
Dropping WiFi leaves it in the 10-20mA range with the Intel breakout board

@RedCyclist1 do you have a way to see what is connected to your internet? Like INet on iPhone?
Matthias Granberry
@mgranberry
Feb 11 2017 02:54
The downside is that WiFi packets only get serviced fairly irregularly so jitter is terrible. I had to install mosh so I could SSH into the device without going insane, which also required configuring a UTF-8 locale. No Yaks left unshaved.
Terri Lyman
@tatigger
Feb 11 2017 02:55
LOL, @mgranberry
@RedCyclist1 I use INet to figure out which "thing" is my Edison, and log in like this ssh root@192.168.1.104
Where 192.168.1.104 is the IP address of my Edison
ssh root@192.168.1.104

@RedCyclist1 I never could get SSH to work any other way. I just don't understand it. But I can understand looking up the IP address, LOL. More than one way to skin a cat....or a network

@tatigger
Feb 11 2017 03:06
@RedCyclist1 You can also use it on your wifi hotspot - I log the IPhone into the hotspot and then use INet to find the IP of the Pi or Edison I am using. There is probably an easier way, but....well.
@ejoe132 try restarting the Edison. I have had that happen before.
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 03:07
@tatigger just an unplug from the battery?
RedCyclist1
@RedCyclist1
Feb 11 2017 03:08
@tatigger which password goes that we set above goes in?? Sorry we are not techie at all and we tried our wifi and edision password.. neither are working
Terri Lyman
@tatigger
Feb 11 2017 03:08
@ejoe132 you can log in and restart from a terminal screen. You can also hold down the little tiny button on the edison - it is next to where the battery plugs in. Hold it down for 10 seconds. To turn it on, hold down for 3 secs. Plug it in to a power source too, when you restart.
Probably just superstition but it seems to find the pump easier with the battery charging/fully charged. Also check your pump battery if this doesn't work. When that gets low it shuts down comms before anything else
@RedCyclist1 you set up 2 passwords with your Edison. Hang on while I grab my notebook. I'm not techie either, I just wrote it all down.
So when I set up my Edison I gave it a password for Root, which is how you are signing in if you are doing it like this:
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 03:13
@tatigger ok, thank you very much, tried and it didnt wanna putty in, gonna let it chill for a few, is feeling pretty hot. Battery will normally charge with just a micro usb into the explorer board while jst battery is in?
Terri Lyman
@tatigger
Feb 11 2017 03:13
ssh root@192.168.1.104
@RedCyclist1 if you logged in as <EdisonHostName>@ipaddress, then you use the password you set for the host. Any OpenAPS stuff you do requires you to be logged in as "root"
@ejoe132 Yes, that it is correct. If you are "in" enough to see your logs, then you are in enough to shutdown. Just
sudo shutdown
Matthias Granberry
@mgranberry
Feb 11 2017 03:15
@scottleibrand @ceben80 Adjusting one of the power states breaks the serial console on the Intel breakout board, but it might be interesting to try on your end to see if power savings are real: https://gist.github.com/mgranberryto/4215e3a424a10e05bbac7439ab1b6241

@tatigger ok found my edison is not connecting to wifi, gonna try and fix that
Terri Lyman
@tatigger
Feb 11 2017 03:33
@RedCyclist1 when you switch between different wifi and hotspots, the Edison can be assigned a different IP address. There is an error that sometimes happens when you try to ssh in to the IP address if it has been used before. The error is: WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED! I bookmarked this webpage and go back to it to fix the problem. Basically you are deleting the old connection with the IP so the new device can be SSH into. The is the link https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=91&t=7215
@ejoe132 That will do it! Glad you at least have a direction to work on

@tatigger also i think my preferences may still be set to zero just realized, now on my rpi it was preferences.json to get into settings, how do I do that on a edison? "nano preferences.json"?
RedCyclist1
@RedCyclist1
Feb 11 2017 03:44
@tatigger what does it mean to edit with Nana or vi?
Terri Lyman
@tatigger
Feb 11 2017 03:44
Yes, same way you would on the Pi. @ejoe132 . Vi is another editing method. Stick with Nano, you already recognize it
"nano" is a command that opens editing for the preferences.json file
And @RedCyclist1
ejoe132
@ejoe132
Feb 11 2017 03:47
@tatigger when i open nano preferences.json it comes up as blank, and says new file at bottom. did i miss something?
Terri Lyman
@tatigger
Feb 11 2017 03:49
When you are in the Nano editor, you navigate with your arrow keys to the line you want to edit. Make the change then hit ctrl+X to exit, and I think it is ctrl+Y to save changes, then enter...if I remember correctly, to get back out to the terminal. @ejoe132 hang on, you might be in the wrong file.

if you have a non-Carelink rig, you should shut off your Carelink one IMO

Feb 11 2017 04:23
LOL....Usually the way I roll. I only use the Carelink/Pi when I need the wifi to switch automatically. I haven't worked that out on the Edison yet. I have to manually switch it to my Hotspot when I am on the go, and manually switch it back to the house wifi when I get home.

We finally have our edison looping! We are a little concerned that openaps is showing COB = 0, even though there are recent carb entries in Nightscout (entered through Loop). Our understanding was that oref0 will pull in any carb treatments from NS. Is that right?

correct. I think it times out after like 4-6 hours or something.

@chookchook1 NS carbs requires the rig to be online
chookchook1

so we just earlier entered 7 g through the pump - will that cause openaps to ignore all earlier carb entries in NS?

Bolus from pump. OpenAPS only sets temp basals.

Feb 11 2017 07:27
are there any disadvantages to using heroku (compared with azure)?
chookchook1
@chookchook1
Feb 11 2017 07:27
Ok, here's a pretty dumb question! We are testing loop and openaps side by side for today and I am wondering if the usual procedure for bolusing with openaps is bolus wizard-> enter BG-> enter carbs, or whether to skip the enter bg step. I was assuming that skipping the bg was usual , but decided I better check!
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Feb 11 2017 07:28
@andyhandy not that I know of. Heroku is definitely cheaper on first paid tier but many get away on free tier
chookchook1
@chookchook1
Feb 11 2017 07:29
@andyhandy we have found heroku to be better all round. However, they do seem to chop and change pricing a fair bit. So far the free dyno has been fine for us though.
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Feb 11 2017 07:30
@chookchook1 you can skip. The main issue with no BG is you can't see iob in bolus wizard...but pump based iob is wrong when looping anyway so doesn't matter. Key to note that some pump models though enter carbs even if you don't progress all the way to bolus, so might want to test and confirm if your pump does that
(Do with a 1g test or something - back out without bolusing and see if NS later logs that 1g or both
*or not)
chookchook1
@chookchook1
Feb 11 2017 07:31
Thanks @danamlewis that's great. Will definitely test that out.

Feb 11 2017 07:38
@danamlewis is there a part of the docs that talks about doing bolus with openaps for the first time that I missed? If not, would that be helpful to write up? I got confused as I was reading about parents who might want a school caregiver to use bolus wizard. That was in the context of "Override the high target with the low" though.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 07:39
I don't think we've ever documented how to bolus with the pump, because we assume people already know how to do that
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Feb 11 2017 07:39
You bolus with the bolus wizard. Or using the easy bolus button. OpenAPS will read the bolus along with anything else you do to it manually.
^
@chookchook1 please pr that in if you think it's helpful, plus any clarifications around the setting description if you find/found it confusing
chookchook1
@chookchook1
Feb 11 2017 07:43
Yes, you kind of hope we can all do a bolus! I think I just wanted to be sure what changes to make to our usual procedure :smile: (Before any kind of loop we would always enter BGL through bolus wizard).
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Feb 11 2017 07:43
You can keep doing that - won't hurt anything
But if you want to skip, that BG entered is not used for anything looping wise
chookchook1
@chookchook1
Feb 11 2017 07:45
Ok, but won't that mean that if BGL is high and openaps has already been high temping, that a second correction as a bolus will be given? Or am I missing something!?
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Feb 11 2017 07:46
No. Bolus wizard BG is not used by OpenAPS. Just CGM data.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Feb 11 2017 07:46
you should avoid doing pump correction boluses with the bolus wizard though
sounds like you're saying entering a BG will make the pump include that in the calculation?
to avoid that, you can either not enter the BG, or you can do the more complicated override high target with low thing
chookchook1
@chookchook1
Feb 11 2017 07:49
Yes, my understanding of bolus wizard is that I doesn't take temps into account when correcting. So, not entering a BG sounds like the best path to me when BGLs are above target. We may try the override target with low soon. Thanks for the clarification guys.

@ceben80 @scottleibrand the powertop --auto-tune command would need to run once per boot or the commands that I posted in the gist above would need to be run. I think it might break some things, though, because it corrupts the serial console. I need to keep investigating.

Feb 11 2017 19:37

We are trying to understand why oref0 is not increasing neutral temp basal, we suspect that it is probably because of snoozeBG.

"snoozeBG": 262,
      "recieved": true,
      "rate": 0.8,
      "reason": "COB: undefined, Dev: 52, BGI: -3.94, ISF: 3.0, Target: 5.6; Eventual BG 10.9 >= 6.7, basaliob 0.56 > max_iob 0; setting current basal of 0.8 as temp. Setting neutral temp basal of 0.8U/hr",

Is that why temp basal is only set to 0.8?

It's because maxiob is 0 (intentional safety setting). You probably want to read through phase 3 next.
Also the page before that in phase 3 will help you understand the output more easily

Hi everyone, i have successfully completed the first boot and config settings with my raspberry pi 2, the SD card image I am using is Rasbian Jessie Lite. I didn't realize until now that this version doesn't use a GUI, only command line. I would much rather use a GUI with my raspberry pi as I can understand it better. My question is, after unplugging my raspberry pi from the monitor, can I take out the SD card, reformat it, and load different version of Raspbian that does use a GUI and boot that with raspberry pi? Or since I have already connected it to raspberry pi and booted it (configured settings) with a different image will it corrupt the system or something?

Ok - so day 1 of vacation. Flights were a mess. Hubby is sick. DS just got out of the pool with his pump STILL on. - yes. Looping pump. He'd taken off the rest of the rig so I didn't think to say anything about the pump. It was clipped on his suit though not on his belt. Still running. Some water indications in screen. I took batt out and insulin cartridge out. What else? no water in bat cartridge. No moisture in insulin cartridge part. Pump currently laying in the sunshine. Total pool time for the pump - under 5 min. Total quiet heart attack time by me - don't know. Not yet finished...., Any other suggestions?

Thanks @danamlewis . @alternateal it could be beyond my coding skills too! But we will see.

Did you bring a backup pump? Might bear watching for a while regardless if it seems to work, it might fail at a later time, so if it looks ok I would still keep an eye on BGs in general for next day or two, but likely the pump would error out before you'd see a BG impact.

I have another looping pump with us at least. And a non looping pump too that has warranty. Hubby made fun of me for bringing 3....

And forgive the (possibly) silly question, but would it be possible to make a native edison xDrip app that picks up the bluetooth from the transmitter directly? As far as I can see all of the hardware required is already on the edison.

Emergency backups are key. So, yay, that's a relief - glad you won't be pump less and loop less. In that case I'd use looping pump backup and give this one more time to dry

@thebookins it isn't a silly question and yes the Edison does have all the hardware, suspect may run into amount of processor and memory, but that is a data-less view

@danamlewis Ok. Put with desiccant in a bag maybe?

No completey sunny unfortunately. Much nicer than Calgary tho. Wet pump makes me feel a bit sick tho. :(. Damn the "firsts".

@alternateal , @danamlewis cool. The iOS app seems much more tractable at the moment, so I'll look into that first. Has anyone made a start on the bluez app? Looks like there are Python and C APIs. Any pros/cons either way? I'm guessing we might be able to make a C program more efficient...

closest thing I know about is openxshareble, which works with the G4 Share. (if you wanted to daemonize that so it works reliably, you'd also make a lot of friends. :-) )
that's written in Python FWIW

semi back in business. got a new (third) edison board, because the previous two had problems with 4.10-kernels
now did a trace cut on the explorer board. still get lsusb -99 errors and no working dexcom g4. does that mean the trace cut is not deep enough and I should cut a bit more?

Bolused for 40 carbs through pump and entered a BG within range (though fake BG). NS shows 80 carbs. Any ideas?

BUT he just had seconds so I added that and bolused through Loop and the carbs show up in NS accurately. Only 20 for seconds. But the 80 carbs are still there from initial bolus.

@hilarykoch you probably should check the NS treatments report

Treatments show two entries at 6:03. Pump shows just one.
I can delete one, right?

And it showed double the insulin. So I just deleted it. Looks like if I bolus through open Loop in Phone it's fine, but not a long-term fix I suppose.
