@scottleibrand @danamlewis @Kdisimone I've written : openaps as a value and enable as a key..I guess it's better ?
thank you so much
but..no it's wrong, I have to have only one var 'enabled' (careportal or pump or openaps)..sorry could you help me to do the right thing ?

@PopcornPam_twitter I don't know that the failed reading register is a problem: it probably just means you're using the Explorer board instead of Intel's breakout board. Most likely you just missed the Ctrl-D prompt on the initial boot. I would try following the instructions in the docs for getting out of rescue mode.

@Kdisimone @danamlewis unfortunately I cant get passed the rootfs. I get the following Starting File System Check on /dev/disk/by-partlabel/home...

thats what happens with ctrl-d

and there it sits. Been doing this all day for some reason. the cmd windows thinks its finished

And control D didn’t move it forward?
jcorbett80
@jcorbett80
Mar 21 2017 00:15
@Kdisimone no..it gave that sh-4.3#
I have flashed my rig a zillion times before without issue. but today for some reason it just wont play
I finally hit enter to get out and it finishes and goes to login but to late for the flash
katie disimone
@Kdisimone
Mar 21 2017 00:16
Well, I’ve seen others get that same message over the last several weeks. Just curious…did you see the control D prompt like the screen shots showed? On the mac, that control-D prompt came up nice and obvious on the bottom of the line. On the Windows, it was up on the top of an already scrolled by list…easy to miss.
I wonder if the control D goes unnoticed and then it goes into a rescue mode after a wait?
jcorbett80
@jcorbett80
Mar 21 2017 00:18

mine wasn't at the bottom. it had several lines after it. Now that I hit enter and it progressed here is what it gives Welcome to rescue mode! Type "systemctl default" or ^D to enter default mode.
Type "journalctl -xb" to view system logs. Type "systemctl reboot" to reboot.
Press Enter for maintenance(or press Control-D to continue):

I was getting confused between the different documents, and hadn't seen the troubleshooting rescue mode. After I edited the flash script it worked
I have read through all the docs a bunch while I was waiting for my parts to come in the mail, but since most of this is very new to me, they are a bit overwhelming and hard to keep track of where different info is. I think it might be helpful to have a link right in there to the troubleshooting doc for those of us getting super frustrated and not necessarily able to think calmly and rationally in the moment

Question, do people find that changing the password from edison is important, or not really? And is there any problem with keeping the hostname exactly as it is in the documents?
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Mar 21 2017 00:38
change your password for sure
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 00:58
if you don't change your rig's password, you're letting anyone on the same local network have full open access to log in and dose you insulin if they feel like it.
and if you're asking that question, you might want to do some reading on password security more generally: you may reuse passwords (you shouldn't) and have easy-to-guess ones on lots of sites, which puts you at a lot of risk of having your data, accounts, or money stolen. I recommend getting a password manager like 1Password and using it to generate unique random passwords for every site and service you use. it can also auto-fill them for you, so you don't have to remember and type the password for each and every site you ever visit.

OK, got through all the initial stuff, now moving trying to install the openaps dependancies, and it says bash: line 3: sudo: command not found, and bash: line 4: sudo: command not found
So i tried it without the line and bash at the end, and it says openaps --version
Is it ok to not have a version number listed?

Search through gitter for the bash: line 3. Someone had this the other day and had to backtrack a step or 2 to resolve
And now we have seen it 2x so probably worth adding the fix to troubleshooting section in docs.

@danamlewis @elodaille01 and I have been working to try troubleshoot her setup. I’ve seen her setup script, looks ok (no typos). Her crontab -l shows normal looking lines. She has NS getting info from OpenAPS like “NewTImeSet”. BGs are in NS. Her papertrail though just doesn’t show any loops going. Nada. She has done sudo service cron start. I don’t understand xdrip systems well…maybe it lies there? She is using xdrip and G4...

Step 0: Dependencies

You first need to install the base openaps toolkit and its dependencies.

Automated Installation Script

Running this code will install all of the dependencies for you automatically:

curl -s https://raw.githubusercontent.com/openaps/docs/master/scripts/quick-packages.sh | bash -

If the install was successful, the last line will say something like:

openaps 0.1.5 (although the version number may have been incremented)
If you do not see this or see error messages, try running it multiple times. It will not hurt to run this multiple times.

(Interested in the development repositories? See this shell script.)

Manual Installation

If you prefer to install the dependencies yourself, the following Debian/Ubuntu packages are required:

git python python-dev python-software-properties python-numpy python-pip nodejs-legacy npm watchdog
The following npm packages are required:

json oref0
Finally, these Python pip packages are required:

openaps openaps-contrib

@elodaille01 it's going to take a while for you to dig into the aliases and run things manually - so you may want to pause and get some sleep and take a fresh look at it again when you have more time

You keep showing the same error output. So you'll want to run things manually until you find out what's not working.

@Kdisimone I removed the /src and /myopenaps directories and attempted to start fresh. Now I'm running into problems with the quick-packages.sh install.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 03:32
@elodaille01 you were close in that last screenshot, but you need to replace <whatever> with the command you're trying to run
it looks like you managed to stop cron and kill off all the running openaps processes: now you just need to run the command that doesn't seem to be working
in this case that looks like the "Old settings refresh" command
to get there, we'll start with looking at what's being run in cron. if you do crontab -l one of the last lines is the ones that does openaps pump-loop
running that manually would get you what's in the pump-loop.log, so we want to drill down one level from there
if you run openaps alias show pump-loop, it will show you what that command does, so you can run individual components of it
@elodaille01 go ahead and run that, and let me know which piece you think your loop is getting stuck on
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 03:38
maybe also paste your output of openaps alias show pump-loop, as it's different for WorldWide pumps than for North American ones

without context, I can't say much, except: it looks like you might be using a bloated GUI image of raspbian. unless you plan to use the GUI (I wouldn't) you could re-flash with a headless CLI-only image and have a lot less bloated crap like x-windows to deal with. but that likely isn't going to stop you from making progress, so I'll need to see more of what's the problem there.
mawhit
@mawhit
Mar 21 2017 03:44
if i quit out of that and let it run to completion then it's installing openaps 0.2.0-dev
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 03:44
you might want to take a look at the quick-packages script or whatever it is you're running and run its components one by one to narrow down where the error is occurring, or where it's getting hung up and needing to be canceled
mawhit
@mawhit
Mar 21 2017 03:46
i've been running a perfectly stable version of openaps on the same rig since november. was just trying to add the advanced features to this rig since i was able to get a edison/explorer rig up and running earlier today.

I need to see copy-paste output of what you're running, what errors or other output you're getting, if any, and showing where it's getting stuck, or whatever the problem is. please also be very specific on what you're doing: for example, specifying if you're typing Ctrl-C to cancel out of something, or if you're doing something else to "quit out".

mawhit
@mawhit
Mar 21 2017 03:52
just attempted it again. why is it only installing the dev version? openaps installed openaps 0.2.0-dev
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 03:52
so what I was suggesting earlier is, if you go to that URL (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/openaps/docs/master/scripts/quick-packages.sh) in a browser, you'll see the script that you're running by pasting in that command...
so if you wanted to re-run just the command that actually installs openaps, you could paste in sudo pip install -U openaps from that script and see just that output
as you can see on the last two lines, it's just running openaps version to get that openaps 0.2.0-dev output. that indicates "you (now) have openaps 0.2.0-dev installed", but doesn't necessarily mean "we just installed openaps 0.2.0-dev"
which version were you wanting?
mawhit
@mawhit
Mar 21 2017 03:55
i just didn't expect to see 0.2.0-dev because i didn't see it earlier today
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 03:56
that's the up-to-date dev version of the underlying openaps toolkit. you probably got that because it's a dependency for some of the stuff in oref0, but I'm not sure which version(s) of oref0 you've installed today, so not sure
but in any event, openaps 0.2.0-dev is fine
there haven't been all that many changes in the underlying Python openaps toolkit recently: most of the action is in oref0 now
mawhit
@mawhit
Mar 21 2017 03:57
i'm moving on to the next step then. it all worked fine up to this point before, i just couldn't get the loop to work.
Scott Leibrand

Mar 21 2017 04:05
@scottleibrand alright. i think i have it up and running again. sorry for the freak out. this has been my most stable rig. my son uses it at night and it has been rock solid for about 5 months.
I do have a question about this in the log though cat: enact/enacted.json: No such file or directory
Why is no enacted.json file being created?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 04:10
that means it hasn't enacted a temp yet since you set it up
mawhit
@mawhit
Mar 21 2017 04:10
but it has
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 04:10

mawhit
@mawhit
Mar 21 2017 04:10
yes
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 04:11
check that file immediately after it enacts the next temp, and see if it's fixed
if you need to, you can set a temp that's different from what it's asking for (or cancel what it's doing) and it should set a new one
mawhit
@mawhit
Mar 21 2017 04:12
a new enacted.json just showed up

it looks like what you pasted was actually ifconfig output
Sacha M
@coolestkidsever
Mar 21 2017 04:55
it can't have two IP addresses can it? weirdly the rig ping is saying "from 192.168.2.15"

@Kdisimone looks like a dead otg port. my cable works in the other port but not in this one. I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers. I have added legacy ports just trying something. I have removed the usb root hub and it doesn't see it to reinstall it. It's simply no longer there. i guess it finally over heated 1 time to many. My board has been extremely hot from the start. I built a case that created a lot of air flow and that extended periods between getting very hot but still not enough. I am going to unplug the edison and replug just to see if that helps but I am not hopeful.

Getting started with openAPS. I plan to buy the Edison with explorer.

I have an iPhone 7 and a dexcom 4 with share. Do I need to buy anything else? (Am I better off with dexcom 5? If I don't need the receiver, why do I need this?)

I noticed some folks have multiple rigs. I presume this is for added ease of connectivity? What do I need to buy these? Thank you!

Thanks!!!
Gideon

@gkreiner you need a battery too like this : https://www.adafruit.com/products/2011

@gkreiner : Hardware information for Intel Edison-based setups
Note: The Edison/Explorer Board combination is the rig setup recommended by the community for size, range, and portability reasons. The high level parts list (see below for more details, and links):

Explorer Board
Edison (which you can now order pre-flashed with Jubilinux)
Nuts and Bolts to hold the Edison on to the Explorer Board
At least one Lithium battery
2 cables

@gkreiner have you completely read throught the documentation? There are sections for each type of set up and what you need for each. It is very helpful. Here is the link just in case you haven't. Choose the View Docs button. http://readthedocs.org/projects/openaps/downloads/

Thanks @elodaille01 and @jcorbett80 ! So here's a follow up question. The pre flashed version is sold out. Should I purchase this instead? Or do you know how often they restock?

https://enhanced-radio-devices.myshopify.com/products/900mhz-explorer-block-pre-order.

The Edison that was referenced in documentation is no longer in stock. (https://enhanced-radio-devices.myshopify.com/collections/900mhz-explorer-block/products/intel-edison-w-jubilinux)

@gkreiner or anyone else--I'll have two edisons flashed later this week if you are still looking then. (I have done a few extra this week in order to experiment on different platforms). at cost, so $40 plus shipping (which I'll use a small usps priority mail box so $7.15). Just drop me a message here on Gitter and let me know

For all the OpenAPS newcomers, here are some personal outcomes since my OpenAPS rig went live. I am still a newbie as well..only been looping for 3 full days. OpenAPS numbers (pre-OpenAPS numbers) are:
Average BG: 98mg/dl (108mg/dl)
eA1C: 5.0 (5.4)
In Target: 97% (79%)
High: 0% (11%)
Low: 2% (9%)
Pre-OpenAPS numbers were not too bad but it was an all day, every day effort and I still had wide swings. OpenAPS has, so far at least, reduced the burden and improved the numbers while virtually eliminating the swings. Just my experience so far...

Has anyone had problems with having to restart edison after moving into a different wifi network? If I leave one wifi network(have home,work, school and phone hotspot) it will connect to the next network I know cause my phone shows connection but it will not loop until I restart the unit. Any tips? Could it have to do with having the open wifi network connect put in? seems I heard something like this happening with that

@danimaniac I just got tethering working. I don't know if my problem applies to your situation but the issues I had had to do with not having a sim card with the right data plan. Also I read that some carriers block tethering so they can charge for it. There are some apps that work around that issue one is PDA net. It's not on play store, you can find it online. Maybe if you have not already make sure your carrier allows it. After pulling my hair out I realized that was my issue

@peterfulvi were you able to get the PGA net to allow bluetooth teather without installing a client on your rig? I side loaded the app to my phone but it would not bluetooth teather still. My phone saw my device but software wouldn't join. If you took notes they would be great.
peterfulvi
@peterfulvi
Mar 21 2017 14:53
it worked for a little bit then stopped for whatever reason. At that point i got a sim card and a data plan. There are definite ways around the client issue. there is an option called hide teher ussage. Like i said i only used it for a very short period before i threw my hands up, but i heard ways of fooling your phone into thinking there is a client. Im going to look further into this issue in the future

@Kdisimone - I'm interested. (Thank you!) Is this the most recent Edison? I can pay you via PayPal. Does that works for you? Just to confirm, I will also need to buy the 900MHZ EXPLORER BLOCK, one battery, Edison hardware pack, and a case. Right?
@Kdisimone Is there anything else advisable to purchase? (i.e. something to extend the range, or extend battery life, or ??). I'm having everything shipped to me in Israel. Just wanting to make sure I'm not leaving anything out.

Mar 21 2017 15:59
@gkreiner it is this exact edison. It is flashed with jubilinux (and I'll take it through the installation of ssh keys, etc in the docs). You will have to install your own openaps. Does not include the explorer board, you would have to buy that (and any other gear you'd need....cables, battery, screws) separately. The $7.15 was for USA shipping. If you want to ship to Israel, I'd have to get a quote for that.

@elodaille01 the spidev5.1 already in use error means you still have the pump-loop running from cron. you'll need to stop cron and killall -g openapsbefore re-running those commands
also, the exact commands you want to run depend on what you're seeing in the logs, and in the output of the previous commands. you'll need to take a look at that output, figure out which things is erroring out, find the command to run that thing manually, and drill down that way.

it’s your call - some people run it w/ no insulin/not attached for several days while they watch the pill/logs to see what it’s doing and why
once they’re comfortable, then they attach it w/ insulin.

@ellabellakaramella the first step is to get your terminals back up. try following the directions from the top of the page up until right before the point where it actually has you run the flash command
you should end up with a console window, where you can get logged into the Edison, if it's responding. if it's not responding, you can hold down the little black power button for 10s to turn the Edison off, then turn it back on and watch the boot sequence

@ellabellakaramella
Mar 21 2017 22:17
@scottleibrand It doesn't find it with the command "sudo screen /dev/tty.usbserial-* 115200" in terminal window. It says there is no such file
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 22:21
have you tried unplugging and re-plugging into the UART port with a known-good microUSB data cable?
Patrik Nilsson
@ellabellakaramella
Mar 21 2017 22:22
It is listed in devices in finder, I just can't connect to it in terminal
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 22:23
it shows up in Finder when you connect to the OTG port
try swapping that cable with the one in the UART port?
Patrik Nilsson
@ellabellakaramella
Mar 21 2017 22:23
Yes
But "sudo screen /dev/tty.usbserial-* 115200" does not work to connect to the Edison.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 22:25
if that doesn't work, it probably means you don't have a good microUSB connection to the UART port. you need to figure out why that is.
usually that involves swapping cables: they can be finicky sometimes
Patrik Nilsson
@ellabellakaramella
Mar 21 2017 22:26
Ok, thank you @scottleibrand
Martin Haeberli
@mhaeberli
Mar 21 2017 22:26
dumb question - sudo screen /dev/tty.usbserial-* 115200 isn’t it the case that usbserial-6, or some other concrete value, is what is actually shown?
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 22:26
the * means "find whichever one is plugged in"
if you had two edison UARTs both plugged in at the same time, then the wildcard wouldn't work, so don't do that. :)
Martin Haeberli
@mhaeberli
Mar 21 2017 22:27
@scottleibrand indeed, but if somehow there are / were multiple recognized, the Mac may have multiple ones; the * works IMHO only if the number is unique
so as a random suggestion, @ellabellakaramella - you MIGHT try rebooting your Mac...
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 22:28
yeah, but in that case you'd get a different error, not "no such file". yes, a reboot might be worthwhile

@mhaeberli So you did have a suggestion after all :-)
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 22:29
originally the directions had people look up the exact /dev/tty.usbserial- device name and use that, but that just confused people, and sudo screen /dev/tty.usbserial-* 115200 works just as well
scottleibrand @scottleibrand is really hoping everyone will go buy pre-flashed Edisons from now on. ;-)

Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 22:35
is this language too strong? openaps/docs#730
(I know most of the people asking for flashing help here didn't have the option to get one pre-flashed, so happy to keep helping until we've gotten y'all up and running.)
And then hopefully we can all be done with walking uphill both ways in the snow to school. ;-p
Martin Haeberli
@mhaeberli
Mar 21 2017 22:39
@scottleibrand language seems reasonable … frankly, as a “pro” flasher of random stuff - bricked phones, etc, etc, the Edison process is up there in complexity. And, BTW, IMHO, the official Intel documents for Mac require homebrew, which conflicts with DarwinPorts, which can get ugly...

so btw, how can I tell if a given Edison is, let’s say, EDI2.LPON or whatever?
Patrik Nilsson

Mar 21 2017 22:48
@scottleibrand @mhaeberli It worked with rebooting my Mac, back in the game again. Kids have been put to sleep, so no interferens.

@danamlewis you are here. I am thinking about switching to pi. Too many over heats with my edison. And now the OTG port is dead. I'm going to contact hamshield to see what they think. But it would be good to see a pi in action to help me decide.
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Mar 21 2017 23:43
It’s not very exciting to look at, fwiw. and mobile-wise, still vote edison/explorer as a mobile rig, but if you’re looking for a backup bedside rig, Pi/TI is good for that. +1 for contacting ERD.

Hi all, quick question please, does the Explorer board for Edison have any GPIO? Thanks
jcorbett80
@jcorbett80
Mar 21 2017 23:47
You said wifi and mobile wise you vote edison. I would set my up to be a closed system just like I did the rig. So if phone connection to pi is good I would be ok. As far as size I carry a should/backpack bag all the time anyway do to other illnesses. So not an issue there

@Bal00 Like https://www.sparkfun.com/products/13038, but be warned: it makes your rig twice as long.
I used that as a battery block spacer with an old pre-Explorer Edison, because it came with the starter kit.
@mhaeberli ok, remind me in the evening sometime.

@djtechman yeah every time T-slim rep calls me trying to get me to buy the next model, i do the same. I also remind him I was told when the new system came out I would be able to software upgrade at no cost. That's when he starts studdering and saying goodbye.
Scott Leibrand
@scottleibrand
Mar 21 2017 23:57
@Bal00 sounds like you're trying to do something rather non-standard, so not sure. the Explorer board uses SPI to talk to the cc1110, if that's relevant
Dana Lewis
@danamlewis
Mar 21 2017 23:57
@MicheleJustine some things re: carelink to check in the troubleshooting list: http://openaps.readthedocs.io/en/latest/docs/walkthrough/phase-2/troubleshoot-oref0-setup.html#it-s-not-working-yet
also per your last q, mmeowlink is easy if you have the relevant radio stick. You can get a TI stick easily (and borrow a cc debugger if you don’t have one/want to pay $50USD to do the one time flash) for your Pi. Or switch to Edison/Explorer Board for rig.

@scottleibrand I'm hoping to build an APS solution for Medtronic 640G. I can send a remote bolus using a Raspberry Pi operating buttons on the Contour Next Link via micro-relays. I'm having trouble with USB drivers on the Raspberry Pi Zero so am taking the dive to Edison as it seems to be the go-to platform for APS...
