folks, it sounds like the native app is still in review limbo with Apple? does anyone know if any developers are working on an apple watch app like the current pebble release? has there been any talk about a basic iPhone app to simply send data to the watch?

@hackingtype1 what issues does Apple have with the iOS app? They don't like web wrappers?
Alastair Halliday

Apple has no problem with web wrappers

Maybe Apple's public relationship with Dexcom is influencing them to drag their feet. Maybe #WeAreNotWaiting but they are.
Maybe the Dexcom

CEO doesn't want us to steal their hinder and release first on iOS.
Their thunder. Ugh autocorrect.

I've thought about that @jimsiff but apple usually states explicitly why it has been rejected for submission. is @hackingttype1 running the submission process?

They wanted to see the app in action, then the last request was a list of "Required Hardware," since it DOES depend on the user having a CGM in play to make the thing work.

@jasoncalabrese
Feb 27 2015 19:59
it doesn't we all run publicly available sites that return all the data needed by the app, no hardware needed
wonder what they said for Fingerstick, that seemed to be approved much faster

Do you know if John has had a chance to submit the information they requested? We're coming up on another 30 days... If the process might extend past early March, a new beta should be released ahead of the expiration.

I don't know. I think it's all in how you present it, Jason. I'm sure the FS guys just said they were displaying a DB table in a graph form and made no mention of the upload side. Spin, baby, spin.

Ha!
Alastair Halliday
@iphotostuff
Feb 27 2015 20:06
agreed. no hardware necessary. just a URL displaying DB data
I think responding to apple is important.

I don't think anyone disagrees. As best I can tell, only one person can sheperd that process, and John's the man on it.

so apple wanted the G4 kit to play with. explained the primary use case to them, and they're "re-evaluating" I'll have a new beta near the expiration of the current one

March 8th
Alastair Halliday
@iphotostuff
Feb 27 2015 20:20
so it's in apple's hands saying they are "re-evaluating?" can you escalate?

I can try, yes

Feb 27 2015 20:22
@hackingtype1 that's interesting, they wanted a G4 to play with and didn't have one?
how did they resolve that?

rumor is they're close w/ dex, don't want to step on their apple watch debut... we shall see

Feb 27 2015 20:24
I wonder if they've been attempting to contact FDA about this
I mean if you were apple, would you care more about FDA or Dexcom?
John Costik
@hackingtype1
Feb 27 2015 20:25
i pointed them to their new guidance, FS, etc...
Ben West
@bewest
Feb 27 2015 20:25
especially considering their own glucose meter got recalled
a conservative lawyer looking at the new guidance would still come away with conclusion that our project is not FDA approved, not compliant, I fear
John Costik
@hackingtype1
Feb 27 2015 20:26
My guess is FDA concern is the issue, yes
Jason Calabrese

I referenced them, use case is the same... still waiting for a response
Alastair Halliday
@iphotostuff
Feb 27 2015 20:27
Apple dealing with a lot of FDA issues especially around the watch sensors right now, but I don't see why that would hold up a response on an app approval process.
Ben West
@bewest
Feb 27 2015 20:28
when Nightscout first came out, there were conversations in industry at executive levels at vendors and FDA about how to shut it down
one theory that seems to be in play is that once Dexcom has a proper way to fulfill the use case, our project will die
and they can shut it down easily without taking something away from people
if that theory is true, holding off just a few weeks would help
what I've heard from Dexcom, informally although at executive levels, is that there are no plans to encrypt unless FDA forces their hand
Alastair Halliday
@iphotostuff
Feb 27 2015 20:31
don't mean to fragment here, but I'm curious if there has been talk here about focusing on developing something native for the watch separate from the phone app
Ben West
@bewest
Feb 27 2015 20:31
one thing we can do to help this situation is to do what FDA asked us to do
at this point, they've asked us to prep some docs and apply for de novo
if we can do that, they can get us approved, and everyone wins
no clinical trials needed for this
we can just submit descriptions of how we do development, along with hazards analysis
I found some tools for helping with that: here's some example output: http://santoslab.org/pub/mdcf-architect/_downloads/PulseOx_Forwarding_System.html#spo2_to_display
