i have not @arnested opened an issue asking about how to build from the master branch so i assumed he was using it from there himself

what do you mean by the "base system"? the operating system the vm runs?

it's custom, based on buildroot. the current config and build scripts are here github.com/nlf/dlite-os

buildroot is kind of letting me down on size with recent versions though so i may eventually be looking in to what it takes to put together a custom alpine build
i used to be able to get it down to about 12mb total between kernel and rootfs, now it's more like 21

Alpine should be cool since it's also damn tiny... Just the question if it also boots so fast

it should also be able to boot very quickly. i have to see how difficult it will be for me to customize it for my needs though
i have a lot of little tricks in there, like an init script that can make sure you're running the newest docker on boot. installing the user's public ssh key. making the vm easy to find from the host by setting its hostname to its UUID etc
