If it is indeed active, I think perhaps the project could collaborate in some way with Open Food Facts. https://world.openfoodfacts.org/ What do you think?

hi folks, I'm looking at the BibJSON project page (http://okfnlabs.org/bibjson/#feedback). It mentions that a number of translators/parsers have been implemented already and are available in the organization's repo. Could someone please point me to that repo if possible? I'm unable to find it.
Tom Morris
@tfmorris
Probably these: https://github.com/okfn/bibserver/tree/master/parserscrapers_plugins but that repo was abandoned almost a decade ago
Davis Marques
@elmarquez
@tfmorris thanks for the pointer
is there still any interest in promoting and using BibJSON or has this standard fallen by the way side?
Tom Morris
@tfmorris
I haven't seen any recent interest, but you should probably ask someone from OKFN for their official position.
Rufus Pollock
@rufuspollock
@elmarquez i still very much like bibjson and have seen use in the wild. Also it was pretty mature so did not need much more work. I also think the cottagelabs folks are still using it.

If anyone is looking for open data day stuff there is a dedicated gitter channel here https://gitter.im/okfn/opendataday
😄
@amercader are you around today per chance? I want to try and fix some stuff on dataportals.org and may need your help deploying!

Good morning folks! I haven't been in the OKFN hangouts for a long time, are they still happening? It would be great to catch up with you, and one is scheduled tonight.

Hi, folks! I can't access field guide page. Anyone has same problem?
Rufus Pollock
@rufuspollock
@melffagundes it's fixed ... (if you mean the frictionless data field guide)

Hello all! As forum posted and tweeted, a virtual hackathon is being organized in Canada this weekend to respond to the Covid-19 crisis. You are warmly welcome to join us from anywhere. The program begins on Friday, starting at 10:00 EDT time.

i tried to join the mailing list and got a warning for an expired SSL cert on lists.okfn.org. i clicked "go anyway" and got a "no such list" error presented to me in the browser
if the list exists can someone add me? mori@invoked.net
Adrià Mercader
@amercader
@moribellamy The lists previously hosted at lists.okfn.org were shut down and archived a while ago. Some of them migrated to alternative homes though, which one were you trying to join? For general okfn projects discussion or following I guess the best place is https://discuss.okfn.org
Thanks for flagging the certificate issue, we are looking into it

Hi folks, I'm new here! 🐣

I came across a Rufus' post on PDF text extraction and I was wondering if any of you could point me to a 2020 state of the art PDF extraction library. I would like to parse journal articles (scientific papers) and reformat them in a better HTML view.

I confess that I have not tested the suggestions from Rufus' post yet, but I will.

@lwinfree
Hi @felipedaraujo__twitter ! We don’t use this channel much anymore, and instead use https://discuss.okfn.org more often. But for your question, I’d recommend trying out some of the suggestions from the blog you posted. For example, Tabula is very popular for this. Also, we recently particpated in a hackday where we parsed some manuscript tables from eLife manuscripts, and you can see that script here: https://github.com/chris48s/elife-tables/blob/master/extract_tables.py. Hope that helps, and if you want to chat about it more, please open a discussion in our discuss forum instead :-)
chris48s
@chris48s
The elife articles were xml, not pdfs.
For PDF table extraction, the best I've seen lately is https://camelot-py.readthedocs.io/en/master/

Thanks for your suggestion @lwinfree and @chris48s. I will look into that.

Hi, I am new in this room. I am from the democratic republic of the Congo. I am the CEO of DRM Africa; an African initiative that applies the open data concept in strengthening the community resilience to both natural and anthropic hazards. I hope getting some useful knowledge and tools to reach out this goal in the African great lakes region. Thank you
Mark Herringer
@markherringer
Hello @kashindipierre healthsites.io is building a baseline of health facility data with OPenStreetMap
as @lwinfree mentions above..https://discuss.okfn.org is where most of the OKFN chat is happening
Kashindi Pierre
@kashindipierre
Is it possible for us to get involved in this process?
And how can we do in order to get involved?
1 - Create an http://openstreetmap.org account
2 - Sign into http://healthsites.io with your OSM account
3 - Find the health facility that you would like to update
4 - @sharehealthdata
