Ben Mezger (seds)
@benmezger
Hey guys, I am working on a personal projeto for sharing Open Access papers. I am created a simple dashboard with Django where a user can view the paper metadata and download the paper itself. I currently have around 10M papers stored in Backblaze B3. I wonder if this is a type of project that may fit in OKFN, since I need some help organising the metadata, perhaps do some text analysis for categorization and so on.

@rufuspollock
@benmezger great to hear from you - definitely something of interest. Let us know more about what you are looking for?

:tada: We’ve just released a new tool for Power BI today. Thought it would be good to share this news on here so you’d be among the first to know :smile:

Data Package Connector (datapackage-connector) is a Power BI Custom Connector for loading tables directly from Tabular Data Packages (Frictionless Data).

Learn more about it at https://github.com/nimblelearn/datapackage-connector

Hello! I'm dipping my toes into TimeMapper, hoping to introduce some faculty at my university to it. Am I seeing correctly that there's no stand-alone account signup option, only through Twitter?
vzafrin
@vzafrin
If that's correct, I'd love to know the rationale for this — mostly so that I can explain it to workshop participants who will then need to make decisions re whether to use it in their classrooms.

I can’t remember if that is only option. I think initially because we needed a nice user name in the url … it would not be hard to change ...

vzafrin
@vzafrin
@rufuspollock ...Well, you'd have to create a user account system that's unique to TimeMapper. Is that on the development roadmap?
Or rather, first: is there someone else who can confirm that currently the only way to create a TM account is through Twitter?
Rufus Pollock
@rufuspollock
@vzafrin we could do login via other services e.g. google or facebook. We’re not likely to implement user/password login in time mapper.
vzafrin
@vzafrin
@rufuspollock Thank you! This helps.

Hi, folks. Any idea why none of the javascript on dataportals.org are loading? okfn/dataportals.org#200

Does anyone know if the open product data project is still active or if someone could give me more information about it. I mean this one : https://product.okfn.org
Augusto Herrmann
@augusto-herrmann
If it is indeed active, I think perhaps the project could collaborate in some way with Open Food Facts. https://world.openfoodfacts.org/ What do you think?

hi folks, I'm looking at the BibJSON project page (http://okfnlabs.org/bibjson/#feedback). It mentions that a number of translators/parsers have been implemented already and are available in the organization's repo. Could someone please point me to that repo if possible? I'm unable to find it.
Tom Morris
@tfmorris
Probably these: https://github.com/okfn/bibserver/tree/master/parserscrapers_plugins but that repo was abandoned almost a decade ago
Davis Marques
@elmarquez
@tfmorris thanks for the pointer
is there still any interest in promoting and using BibJSON or has this standard fallen by the way side?
Tom Morris
@tfmorris
I haven't seen any recent interest, but you should probably ask someone from OKFN for their official position.
Rufus Pollock
@rufuspollock
@elmarquez i still very much like bibjson and have seen use in the wild. Also it was pretty mature so did not need much more work. I also think the cottagelabs folks are still using it.

i tried to join the mailing list and got a warning for an expired SSL cert on lists.okfn.org. i clicked "go anyway" and got a "no such list" error presented to me in the browser
if the list exists can someone add me? mori@invoked.net
Adrià Mercader
@amercader
@moribellamy The lists previously hosted at lists.okfn.org were shut down and archived a while ago. Some of them migrated to alternative homes though, which one were you trying to join? For general okfn projects discussion or following I guess the best place is https://discuss.okfn.org
Thanks for flagging the certificate issue, we are looking into it

Hi folks, I'm new here! 🐣

I came across a Rufus' post on PDF text extraction and I was wondering if any of you could point me to a 2020 state of the art PDF extraction library. I would like to parse journal articles (scientific papers) and reformat them in a better HTML view.

I confess that I have not tested the suggestions from Rufus' post yet, but I will.

Lilly Winfree
@lwinfree
Hi @felipedaraujo__twitter ! We don’t use this channel much anymore, and instead use https://discuss.okfn.org more often. But for your question, I’d recommend trying out some of the suggestions from the blog you posted. For example, Tabula is very popular for this. Also, we recently particpated in a hackday where we parsed some manuscript tables from eLife manuscripts, and you can see that script here: https://github.com/chris48s/elife-tables/blob/master/extract_tables.py. Hope that helps, and if you want to chat about it more, please open a discussion in our discuss forum instead :-)
chris48s
@chris48s
The elife articles were xml, not pdfs.
For PDF table extraction, the best I've seen lately is https://camelot-py.readthedocs.io/en/master/

Thanks for your suggestion @lwinfree and @chris48s. I will look into that.
