awesome, the README should generally be correct for getting stuff running

docker-compose up complains of the absence of .env file. Is it possible to use env.example as my .env file?
michaelb
@michaelpb

@ngksternhagen i think so! all the docker stuff came with the cookiecutter template i used to restart the project: https://github.com/pydanny/cookiecutter-django

i haven't had a chance to actually try it out, but probably(-ish) should be pretty reasonable

michaelb
@michaelpb
btw, the docker compose files there are probably overkill
i think they include things that openlab doesn't need any more
since omnic is coming along nicely there is no need for celery or rabbitmq
or worker nodes or anything

@ngksternhagen
The docker-compose stuff didn't work for me. I filed an issue and then closed it since the problem was actually caused by user error.
proceeding to familiarize myself with the project sans Docker.

@ngksternhagen oh cool...... yeah i have actually not tried using those docker files, they just came with the cookiecutter template.... they "should" work, but likely need a lot of tweaking

@viktorsmari
Hi everybody!
Viktor Smári
@viktorsmari
I work as a software developer at Fablab Barcelona with @Jonathan-Minchin and I would like to help move this project forward!
In order to get more people involved, should we mirror the code on Github?
michaelb
@michaelpb

hey @viktorsmari -- Cool, i'd love to help you get going with this then! I won't have much time for direct development on Open Lab itself, but I am planning on diving into OmniC soon again (which we can discuss what that is). That said I would be very happy to provide the resources + planning neccessary for others such as yourself to get this rolling again.

Why don't we schedule a call? Are there any time slots here that would work: https://calendly.com/kickstartcoding/admissions/ ?

(and i have no strong preference for github vs not)
Viktor Smári
@viktorsmari
Cool! I don't think I will be spending that much time on this, I just wanna help when I can, and feel like it.
The repo has been duplicated to Github as well: https://github.com/openlab-org/openlab.org
I asked @Jonathan-Minchin to create issues and maybe write down his vision for the project, so contributors could know where to start.
I personally would like to see the Dockerization complete, so getting the project up and running would be easy as docker-compose up- I know Docker well, but Django not so much
At fablab we use Docker for almost everything, and we use docker-compose in production with good results

@Jonathan-Minchin
Hey @viktorsmari .. beyond issues on github, what other ways are there to post useful comments and observations?
Viktor Smári
@viktorsmari
@Jonathan-Minchin do you have an example?
If it is knowledge from you, the creator, I would probably put it in the README.md in the repository
Jonathan Minchin
@Jonathan-Minchin
@viktorsmari thanks for that. I guess I was refering to the stories tool but will stick with making issues now as you suggested.
michaelb
@michaelpb
@Jonathan-Minchin hey did ya want to have a call now? :)
Jonathan Minchin
@Jonathan-Minchin

Hey @michaelpb ... thanks for the call. I have listed below some of the next steps for @viktorsmari too.

  • Repos of 10 example projects initially forked from my git repos and osbh repos.
  • Extend to include sub directories component file types that demonstrate file types and needs.
  • Readme files that explain the projects for end users.
  • landing page on wix or similar.
  • Changing the hosting from cloudfare is super important

The idea here will be to start from the smallest design component and rebuild the demonstration repository that somebody would like to use with me adding git issues. Adding mapping associations later.
