@safiume
I'm still tracking down the error and uncertainty of the model for these numbers.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
I bicycled to the meetup... I'm in the seahorse jersey.

@safiume
It's been ages! What a year. I have my head in a prototype for Autofracture and with the latest SR1.5, everyone is talking about carbon again.
The next ONC meetup is this evening at either Hacker Dojo or a cafe in Palo Alto. I'm half tempted to do a cafe near the Palo Alto train station.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
I've started the meetup at Peets in Santa Clara. I'm outside, and on a hangouts.
Tito Jankowski
@titojankowski
how was the meetup @safiume, any new ideas?
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
@titojankowski It was very lightly attended. Met a new member Scott and refereed him to the CARBON RUSH -- The Next Mega-Trillion Frontier meetup and http://manylabs.org. He's reviewing the current entrepreneurial carbon projects to decide how to contribute.

The meetup is happening at Peets!

@safiume
@/all I created a jupyter notebook of the CDR Experiments for Susan's and my upcoming paper. The notebook and magicc input files for the new paper are on github: https://github.com/hsbay/cdrmex.
I do need volunteers for the Maker Faire! 5/17-19! And especially when I'm talking on CDR on the 18th. dm me.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
I should get me some Azolla! We've got a tough precedent to beat.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
Meetup today! It's a virtual one. Dm for the conference call link.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
Meetup has been moved to tomorrow at 12:30. See all of you then.

@safiume
ONC meetup is happening now.
I'm at Peet's in Santa Clara.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
OnC will be Discovery Days in SR, and SF.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
I'm at the tables outside of Peet's, however, I'll have to move either into Peet's or nearby as I'm low on power.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
I'm in the ferry building near the Cowgirl Creamery, at high table nearest to a power outlet.

@safiume
Hi! There, virtual meeting tonight. DM for conference line details.
(And I'll physically be at the UCSF lib on Parnassus St in SF tonight.)
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
the UCSF network isn't allowing ghangouts. dm or drop by for the meetup.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
Wow, the journal article I want to read is paywalled by Elsevier as the UCs didn't renew their subscription. I'll see if I can get this from a CSU otherwise I'll visit Stanford.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
Once ONC finds the fastest way to go to solid C from CO₂, it allows nearly all of these markets to store carbon and become a Negative Emissions Technology: https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1pZRQcMRGDybmGChXYFyawuOJWIIo8RXlq4ngw2csyms/. I say nearly all because forming a carbonate rock is likely to be faster than an electrochemical process.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
Why create a portfolio allocation? Because most people are touting individual solutions but they can't globally reach gigatonne scale. A combined retooling of multiple industries, albeit resource-intensive, will allow us to have multiple markets when aggregated capable of negative emissions in the gigatonne scale. Other people have simply been overwhelmed with the negative and are trying to tune out to the climate discussion. This document is meant to be a seed to incentivize thinking different about carbon use and reengineering products to ultimately create a market to pay for DAC.

Meetup today, here on gitter!
Feel free to direct message @safiume here via Gitter or chat in this room.

@safiume
No meetup tonight. I've had health issues unrelated to COVID-19, none the less have been taking up too much time. Hopefully next week, I'll bring ONC back up to full speed. Best everyone.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
I've changed the survey to move the physical meetups to not occur till post Q3 2021 or medical intervention for COVID-19. There's no reason to incur extra risk.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
Meetup moved to 11:30 (AM) PDT June 18th, in this chatroom. Hope to see you here.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
Meetup moved to Meetup room -> https://gitter.im/opennanocarbon/meetup , hope to see you there tomorrow.

@safiume
And it's been nearly forever!
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
A reminder, this group is focused on going from $CO_2$ to chemical (possibly plasma) methods where most of the product is solid carbon. Chemical routes to carbon monoxide aren't exactly relevant. I say exactly, as it's only going to be relevant if we exhaust the search of going to solid carbon. There are some reactions in plasma that take carbon monoxide and get solid carbon and $CO_2$ back, which could be fed back. This is seen as a waste since it's energy-intensive. Not ideal in the slightest.
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
This paper shows that $CO_2$ absorbed onto cation-excess magnetite will end up that oxygen will be absorbed and diffused through the magnetite, while most carbon will end up on the surface. Neat. A small amount of $CO$ was generated. The experiment was not a standard temperature and requires 290ºC and some pressurized $CO_2$(g). The conversion rate is low, given the energy needed to reach 290ºC, 2.9-3.5 x 10^-3 mol per min per g of cation excess magnetite. However, it gives me ideas related to liquid metal electrocatalysts.

(hello - I follow here from your post on airminers slack and new year / retrospective blogpost)

@TTimo
so magicc does not release their source code, only makes a windows binary available?
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
Hi there! Yes, the latest is magicc 6.8 and it's is only a windows binary. I've asked if there is a prerelease of 7, but unfortunately no, they are rewriting it.
My kit is wine+pymagicc exactly like what's written in the docs for pymagicc and CDRMEx, on MacOS.
Thanks for following @TTimo! ONC is a work in progress and hopefully going to do actual cool stuff shortly.
Timothee "TTimo" Besset
@TTimo
thanks - there's a lot to explore on your wiki
Shannon A. Fiume
@safiume
Yes, lots of breadcrumbs. The most current is the work adapting pymagicc to do CDR and test CDR in large scale formats and pull down SFGhG to meet net-zero/elimination of FF industry by 2030. Right now the current worksheets remove 455GtC to get to about zero. It ought to move upwards since we've exceeded 460 GtC for FF CO₂ (this year, sadly.) Second, is to do calibrate removal similar to the work in RCMIPS: https://doi.org/10.5194/gmd-2019-375, but in a more abbreviated manner. I started that w/ hsbay/cdrmex#6.
Timothee "TTimo" Besset
@TTimo
I see - what does SFGhG stand for ?
