I am thinking about calling an OpenRIF meeting sometime to discuss the ins and outs of reified relationships vs BFO processes and what they mean in VIVO-ISF.
Today I replied to an email from Thea Lindquist, who is working with Alex to investigate extending VIVO-ISF to cover historical persons, and in writing my reply I realized that I either do not understand how and when to use them or that some of the more recent reified relationship diagrams on the VIVO wiki are wrong because they realize roles via relationships instead of processes.
This also made me wonder about how we implemented the contributor roles.
(Hello all, I needed a chatty place to think out loud about the ontology)

@aviggio
Thanks for sharing our questions. Any chance we could schedule this meeting in mid/late June?

@marijane
That is about when I had in mind for it. :smile:
when i figure out a specific date/time i will post details to the openrif lists and vivo-tech.

@marijane
@aviggio I have since learned that this apparent discrepancy in how roles are realized are the result of an unresolved disagreement between the requirements of the VIVO software and the modeling requirements of BFO. I’ve decided, instead of a meeting, to ask for clarification on the openrif-dev mailing list.

Hi, Marijane! Are there a manual or a book about ontology development?
marijane white
@marijane
Hello @eugeneai! A good one is http://workingontologist.org/
It is a good thorough introduction to ontologies and the semantic web
http://protege.stanford.edu/publications/ontology_development/ontology101.pdf is a classic. it is old, and so is some of the jargon used within it, but it is a mostly technology agnostic approach to describing a process for creating an ontology.

@marijane Thanks, I've forgotten to come and say it early.

@marijane
@eugeneai No problem, you're welcome

I've very interested in getting a look at the elements that define a researcher's name as it would commonly be printed (e.g. prefix, first, middle, last, serial postnominal (e.g. Jr.), degree postnominal (e.g. M.D.), licensures/fefllowships (e.g. R.N. or FACS, etc.).
