When a tile fails to load, it seems like nothing can be done to see the information in the tile beside reloading. In a case I'm looking at, reloading the page can be painful. It seems like the viewer could be more resilient to errors, like trying a second time to load a tile that failed, or skipping that tile and loading higher-res tiles in the affected area. If getting stuck trying to load a bad tile is a concern, it could wait until the user tries to zoom in deeper on the area. Is that something you would be interested in?

It should already load higher res tiles when you zoom in... does it not?
I don't want it to retry failed tiles automatically, but maybe it would be good to have a retry mechanism that could be triggered

I'm pretty sure it doesn't, but I was trying to double-check that today, and I gave up trying to get an error.

It already should be covering that space with lower res tiles. Loading higher res tiles is an interesting idea, though it would probably require a bit of restructuring
You could remove one of your tiles from your server so it always errors
You can also turn debug mode on to get a better sense of what it's doing

Yeah, when I get back to this tomorrow, I'm sure I can force an error. I wanted to check and see if that was something already on your radar, though.

Cool. Well, I believe the behavior at the moment is to use lower res tiles until you zoom in and then load the higher res tiles. If that's not the case, then it's a bug.
Looking into mechanisms for retry would probably be worthwhile. Having it use higher res tiles might be a little trickier, but would be neat if possible
