@FrieseWoudloper in the netherlands RVO publishes the complete address but EU only asks for municipality name. http://ec.europa.eu/agriculture/cap-funding/beneficiaries/shared/index_en.htm
waterbug
@creepywaterbug
I know that Inspectie Gewas is also scraping Word docs like Ivor is doing.
Simeon Nedkov
@ndkv
@AtlasLO_twitter Thanks, good to know.
It's amazing (and sad) to hear that everybody is wasting time and resources scraping the same documents over and over.
Ivor
@ivorbosloper
@keeskodde_GP_twitter farmers are reluctant to share exact usage/applications of pesticide usage. In my opinion it's not because they're intentionally doing something wrong, but because the regulations around it are so complex, not even the government department defining all these rules is capable to digitize this is an understandable database, although they've planned this for over 30 years.
Corline van Es
@clien_twitter
@AtlasLO_twitter so we need some kind of in between space, where we can open up data you can't
Simeon Nedkov
@ndkv
I'd say you need to find people who are willing to open and use their data as a leverage.
Just like OS did with open spending.
waterbug
@creepywaterbug
@Ivor Have you ever thougt about using waterquality data ?
kees kodde
@keeskodde_GP_twitter
I understand the hesitations of farmers, but local governments and waterschappen could be a lot more open about pesticide usage
Atlas Leefomgeving
@AtlasLO_twitter
@clien_twitter That might be part of a solution. A sort of safe haven for data -owners as well
waterbug
@creepywaterbug
I just scraped the waterboards measurements in a userfriendly api for that http://openh2o.nl/ihw/meting
kees kodde
@keeskodde_GP_twitter
Problem with the Waterschappen is the quality of their measuring varies widely
Simeon Nedkov
@ndkv
Why is that?
kees kodde
@keeskodde_GP_twitter
influence of the farmers inside the Waterschappen i am afraid
Bart Spee
@Legolias_twitter
Opening up data is hard work. Even in our own organisation it is hard to convince colleagues to open up their data or even show all they got.
waterbug
@creepywaterbug
at least you can easily find where are problems with pesticieds by using WQ data
kees kodde
@keeskodde_GP_twitter
Bestrijdingsmiddelenatlas.nl also gives info
Ivor
@ivorbosloper
@ndkv people didn't believe we could pull it of. And there's another problem: people don't want to trust a database by volunteers, they want an official database by the government body. But that's probably what people said before wikipedia about enceclopedia. You have to see it to believe it...
Corline van Es
@clien_twitter
@Legolias_twitter thats why we create these kind of platforms
waterbug
@creepywaterbug
bestrijdingsmiddelenatlas is closed website for waterboards on ther measurements. But there measurements self are open and available. It is easy to make something like bestrijdingsmiddelenatlas.nl with it.
kees kodde
@keeskodde_GP_twitter
Sorry, I have to run, thanx for the session, byebye, to be continued!
Corline van Es
@clien_twitter
Everyone, I think meanwhile I am ending the official part .... so that people feel free to sneak out :) but please keep using this place to keep the conversation going. Thank you so much for making time everyone!
Thanks Kees!
Simeon Nedkov
@ndkv

influence of the farmers inside the Waterschappen i am afraid

Good to know.

But that's probably what people said before wikipedia about enceclopedia. You have to see it to believe it...

Or OpenStreetMap

Thanks @keeskodde_GP_twitter We'll keep in touch!
Atlas Leefomgeving
@AtlasLO_twitter
See you next time. Keep us informed and good luck to you all with opening up data!
Ivor
@ivorbosloper
@creepywaterbug I saw you published the water-quality API. I'm not sure how to use it yet. I've been told the time between chemical usage and measurement is long (years). How could farmers benefit of this data?
Corline van Es
@clien_twitter
@ndkv will work out the notes
willdo @AtlasLO_twitter thanks for your time!
Eric Terlien
@EricTerlien_twitter
Thanks all and contact me or Bart if you have questions or ideas with our (South Holland) data.
Richard Tukker
@RichardTukker_twitter
Nice to meet you all. Goodbye, and see you next time.
Simeon Nedkov
@ndkv
Yes, thanks for participating in this (succesful) experiment. We'll try to condense this in a blog post or doc.
Corline van Es
@clien_twitter
thanks @EricTerlien_twitter thanks @RichardTukker_twitter !
:bye bye:
waterbug
@creepywaterbug
Ivor: yes I understand what you mean. But you have these places in which certain pesticides always show up in high quantities.
Boyan Nedkov
@attexx
goodbye, thanks to all too
So, since this isn't a physical room that closes at 17:30 we can continue discussing opening up data. :)
Willy Tadema
@FrieseWoudloper
I've got to go too. Bye!
Simeon Nedkov
@ndkv
I think @clien_twitter is preparing an "official" closing statement...
@FrieseWoudloper Thanks for your time!
waterbug
@creepywaterbug
Do we get a speach of @clien_twitter ?
Simeon Nedkov
@ndkv
I guess it's up to me to thank you all for participating in this chat. I hope you enjoyed it and found it useful. Let us know if you'd be willing to participate in future sessions.
waterbug
@creepywaterbug
thanks everybody. nice to have experienced a virtual meetup for the first time. have a nice evening.
Simeon Nedkov
@ndkv
I found it extremely useful and enlightning. We've clearly got a lot of exciting work to do.
I put it in the follow-ups section of the google doc.
Corline van Es
@clien_twitter
Thank you @creepywaterbug for your valuable contribution, as always!
