Hi everyone! I have a microservice-based architecture and i would like to use Zipkins to trace messages from one service to another. I have a php implementation of my application's logic where i orchestrate the requests to the microservices. What i need to add in order to send data to Zipkins? Do i have to configure each microservice or should i use the Zipkin's php library in order to instrument my app?

Trying with py flask

ZIPKIN_DSN = os.environ.get("ZIPKIN_DSN", "http://zipkin:9411/api/v2/spans")

def default_handler(encoded_span):
body = encoded_span
app.logger.debug("body %s", body)

return requests.post(
    headers={"Content-Type": "application/json"},
Any leads on how I should troubleshoot this? TIA

Hi Team, I am new to open source and started learning spring boot recently. I wish to start contributing to the open source community. Zipkin project seems to be lot more appealing as it's having a continuous code updates. Can someone please help me with how should I start withing this group? Appreciating if someone can share any learning roadmap specific to the project.

while running zipkin.jar with elasticsearch as stoarge, we also need to run zipkin-dependencies.jar.
My question is, do we need to run it once ? as it is being executed and then stopped(done), not running continuously!!!

Hi, I am trying to configure storage for zipkin using Kubernetes. I am able to deploy the zipkin image and see traces in the ui using STORAGE_TYPE: mem pretty easily. when I try to set up elasticsearch storage from the openzipkin/elasticsearch6 image its stuck on STATUS: CrashLoopBackOff. Logs saying ERROR: [2] bootstrap checks failed. Anyone know what's going on with this? Also if you know how to give the elastic pod more RAM that would be great.
Alice Wasko
I think I figured out how to modify the memory with JAVA_OPTS, when I run the elasticsearch I'm getting "heap size [1.9gb]" up from the previous 256, but I still get the crashloop with the bootstrap message. Also, still getting max virtual memory areas vm.max_map_count [65530] is too low, increase to at least [262144] despite increasing the memory. Any help greatly appreciated.

hello guys.. I recently installed zipkin server and integrated it with 4 microservices (out of dozens waiting for the integration) ... my server configuration for zipkin is 8 CPUs and 8GB RAM ... but it seems the server is burning the CPU down ... when I issue the TOP command it gives me 500% usage of zipkin service running .... the zipkin gui is pretty much unusable.. i can access it on IP:9411/zipkin/ but when I hit dependencies or trace .. it keeps on loading in the middle and shows nothing...

Any idea why it is so CPU expensive ???

hello all ,I want to ask something about zipkin server connect elasticsearch. while my elasticsearch cluster enabled xpack http ssl,I run zipkin server with java -DSTORAGE_TYPE=elasticsearch -DES_SSL_NO_VERIFY=true -DES_HOSTS=https://node1.elastic.com:9500 -DES_HTTP_LOGGING=BASIC -DES_USERNAME=elastic -DES_PASSWORD=xxx -jar zipkin-server*.jar, but it doesn`t work. It log com.linecorp.armeria.client.endpoint.EmptyEndpointGroupException, and elasticsearch log javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: no cipher suites in common. Can anyone resolved it , thank you very much!

hey guys, is it possible to use zipkin-dependencies in a kubernetes cronjob?
i've tried to invoke the zipkin-dependencies image with '/bin/sh -c /etc/periodic/daily/zipkin-dependencies-yesterday' command in a kubernetes cronjob, but it fails with permission denied to run that script. Is there a way to make kubernetes cronjob do the trick instead of running 24/7 a heavy container just to run once a day its job?

I am bringing in my kafka instrumentation to zipkin.
what is recommended: Brave: Kafka Interceptor(https://github.com/openzipkin-contrib/brave-kafka-interceptor) or Brave Kafka instrumentation(https://github.com/openzipkin/brave/tree/master/instrumentation/kafka-clients)

Good morning for the zipkin server what is the main class called?
For some reason my docker image can't load org.springframework.boot.loader.PropertiesLauncher
So wanted to see if I could run the main class directly

Or I guess a better question is... how can I load/add spring boot to my docker image so I can run Zipkin?

Fixed that issue and what not

How do I connect to a secure aws server/for the storage/backend that does not use kinesis?
Trying to use the zipkin-module-storage-elasticsearch-aws-0.21.3-module but that github is gone... unsure if it's supported anymore or not
I've currently setup a container (openzipkin/zipkin-aws) with a secured AWS ES cluster as storage backend. Everything works as intended. Only the dependencies graph is empty currently. As far as I understood zipkin-dependencies should be used for this. There is a Docker Image (openzipkin/zipkin-dependencies/) available that supports ElasticSearch, but it does not seem to support connecting to a secure AWS ES cluster. Is this correct? Is there anything you can recommend to make the dependency graph in Zipkin work in this setup?
Hello everyone

I am getting this error when opentelemetry is trying to export traces to Kafka using Kafka sender.

Hey everyone. I'm trying to mark a span as non-erroneous but I cannot find the way to do so. We're calling an API which returns 409 for valid cases. We don't throw any exception when the API returns 409. I'm not sure if there's some logic down the line that just converts HTTP 409s to errors. Any ideas?

Hello team, I'm trying to convert Tags field in Zipkin's SpanModel from map to string. zSpans is defined like this so I'm trying to call zSpans.Tags but my terminal says

zSpans.Tags undefined (type []*model.SpanModel has no field or method Tags)

which I am confused of because there is a Tags field in SpanModel. Is there a better way to refer to Zipkin's Tags field?

Hey everyone, I want to use the kafka collector but my cluster is setup with SASL_SSL with GSSAPI sasl mechanism. The collector is having trouble connecting to the cluster. I also want to use kafka as storage so I will probably need to add similar configs for that as well. Can you please provide some help. I tried running the zipkin jar like this. I removed some of the sensitive information.

KAFKA_BOOTSTRAP_SERVERS=SASL_SSL://ip:port,SASL_SSL://ip:port java -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.sasl.mechanism=GSSAPI -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.security.protocol=SASL_SSL -Djava.security.auth.login.config=/path/jaas.conf -Djava.security.krb5.conf=/path/krb.conf -Djavax.security.auth.useSubjectCredsOnly=true -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.ssl.truststore.location=/path/truststore.jks -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.ssl.keystore.location=/path/keystore.jks -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.ssl.truststore.password=pass -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.ssl.keystore.password=pass -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.ssl.key.password=pass -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.sasl.kerberos.service.name=name -jar zipkin.jar --logging.level.zipkin2=DEBUG

The zipkin server starts with no errors but doesn't seem like the collector is connected to the cluster. Am I using the right properties?

I also tried using the docker zipkin image. These are the env I set when creating the container. It's pretty much the same as above.

KAFKA_BOOTSTRAP_SERVERS=SASL_SSL://ip:port,SASL_SSL://ip:port JAVA_OPTS=-Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.sasl.mechanism=GSSAPI -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.security.protocol=SASL_SSL -Djava.security.auth.login.config=/path/jaas.conf -Djava.security.krb5.conf=/path/krb.conf -Djavax.security.auth.useSubjectCredsOnly=true -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.ssl.truststore.location=/path/truststore.jks -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.ssl.keystore.location=/path/keystore.jks -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.ssl.truststore.password=pass -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.ssl.keystore.password=pass -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.ssl.key.password=pass -Dzipkin.collector.kafka.overrides.sasl.kerberos.service.name=name

When the zipkin container starts up, I get this class not found error. Is the java inside the container missing that class? How can I add it?

Hi Zipkin - I am working on a group project for a data visualization course via UC Berkeley. We've decided to see if we can create some new, useful visualizations of trace data, both at the single trace level, and at the aggregate level (i.e. visualizations for groups of traces). Have two questions for the community: 1) are there good public datasets that we could use as we develop the viz? some sets of zipkin traces in JSON or other accessible format? 2) is there an existing list of visualizations that have been proposed for zipkin, but nobody's gotten around to implementing them?

Hello guys, my zipkin is working pretty much ok .. the only problem I have is the cassandra integration ... I installed cassandra, run it ... but I cannot force zipkin use it's storage

by simply running "root@machineName ~]# STORAGE_TYPE=casandra java -jar /opt/zipkin/zipkin.jar" it fails to start with

Parameter 0 of constructor in zipkin2.server.internal.ZipkinQueryApiV2 required a bean of type 'zipkin2.storage.StorageComponent' that could not be found.

Consider defining a bean of type 'zipkin2.storage.StorageComponent' in your configuration.
