Hello Team , i am exploring zipkin server and UI. Current Dependency UI is good but it is lacking to show Realtime data . is there an UI which can pull just dependencies links from dependency tables but the data (success count and failure) can be realtime from trace table ?

is there have other options than changing MYSQL 8 password plugin to mysql_native_password when connecting zipkin to mysqldb storage ?

Hi all,
Is it ok to collect traces without zipkin-server? We already have all infrastructure for gathering logs from our services. First logs are sent to kafka topic, then logstash get them ftom the topic and push into elastic. Can we gather traces the same way? Maybe you have some recommendations or advices about this architecture.

Zipkin version: 2.23.2 , ES Version: AWS ES 7.9

I have setup zipkin to write spans to our AWS managed ES instance. But I am unable to search tags object in ES. They have been marked as unknown datatype and are not enabled in the template.

How can I resolve this?

The zipkin template is:

Hi, has anyone here used ZipkinJS with a web framework like Express and thread workers? My goal is to capture a trace from start (incoming req) to finish (worker task processed), when work is delegated to a node thread. My issue right now is that context is lost, since threads don't share variables and the context is not serializable. anyone have ideas/examples?

Hi guys. Need to inject span context or something into my kafka messages (using sarama/golang) does this lib helps with this situation? I imagine something like: inject spanContext at kafka's message Header and extract it from the header in the other microservice. Thanks (in short, I need to follow the span along all the microservices that communicates using kafka).

Please try to update to a later Zipkin version when using newer ES versions. ES tends to break its API’s often so you need to upgrade Zipkin too.

Hi Guys, I need help in setting up Zipkin with Casandra or MySQL. So far I have tested with Zipkin docker. I could not find any proper documentation on setting up Zipkin with Casandra or MySQL. Is it intentional that the Spring Boot actuator endpoint exposes endpoints like /heapdump ? It allows any user to obtain a heapdump by calling "actuator/heapdump". The "env" endpoint is also exposed which might expose credentials.

hello trying to use spring boot sleuth which use zipkin to send to google cloud trace but I get a timeout because I'm premise, is there a way to see where it tries to connect ? is it something I can change ? thanks

Hi all, we are trying to use sleuth to send logs to zipkin. So I have added below dependencies implementation "org.springframework.cloud:spring-cloud-starter-zipkin" implementation "org.springframework.cloud:spring-cloud-starter-sleuth" implementation "org.springframework.cloud:spring-cloud-sleuth-zipkin"

And added below props in logback.xml
[%X{traceId} %X{spanId} %X{X-Span-Export}]

With the above changes in our 2 services, we were expecting zipkin will have some logs, but nothing appeared. So then we tried to add below properties in application.properties
spring.zipkin.base-url=http://localhost:9411 spring.zipkin.enabled=true spring.zipkin.service.name=rcp-command spring.sleuth.enabled=true spring.sleuth.integration.enabled=true spring.sleuth.sampler.rate=100 spring.sleuth.sampler.probability=1.0 spring.sleuth.sampler.percentage=1.0 spring.zipkin.sender.type=web

And still dont see logs / service name in zipkin.
Can you see what am I doing wrong here. Out apps have cloud-stream dependencies as well. And also noted that in logs I am getting X-span-export coming as false. For ex: [3e205e41db60212f 77a405a53d62c9fa false]

Hi Does Zipkin support link tarcking to RabbitMQ if I'm use NetCore

Hi all, I'd like to ask about zipkin with grafana dashboard.
I installed zipkin with grafana using official docker-compose (but storage is elasticsearch. because when I use mysql, an access error happens. es doesn't happen)

By the way, I am using zipkin for collecting graphQL execution time with nodejs application. (using opentelemetry library such as HttpInstrumentation, ExpressInstrumentation and GraphQLInstrumentation)
And I'd like to show which graphQL queries are slow on some graphical chart.

I try to use prometheus metrics explorers below with the grafana dashboard.

But it looks like they can't filter any metrics tags on grafana dashboard ... (because in terms of above controller, we can only use 'instance, job, transport' labels)

Could we do that by prometheus metrics explorers? Or, for filtering by metrics, should we use data storage (such as elastic search, mysql, etc) on grafana dashboard?
Thank you so much.

Hi all, sorry for asking again.
I changed my strategy. Actually, zipkin + Grafana dashboard is not suitable for my requirements.
I switched to using elasticsearch storage with zipkin and I'd like to show Kibana Visualize(dashboard) for showing tracing information.

By the way, how is "tags" index enabled for the Visualize field?
As far as I know, we have two approaches. 1: query indexing 2: template index.
However, we can filter by tags ( https://github.com/openzipkin/zipkin/tree/master/zipkin-storage/elasticsearch#query-indexing ) but '_q' doesn't appear in the field.

And it looks like we can use the template index approach. (https://github.com/openzipkin/zipkin-support/issues/46#issuecomment-742872992)
I tried to fetch it. But I don't get any template index.

$ curl -s 'localhost:9200/_index_template'

My environment:
official docker compose yaml of zipkin
official docker compose yaml of elasticsearch7 (openzipkin/zipkin-elasticsearch7) (version 7.9.3)
oss Kibana image (docker.elastic.co/kibana/kibana-oss:7.9.3) (version 7.9.3)

Hi. I’ve been working on an open source project called Kronicle that includes an integration with Zipkin. Here’s some info in case any is interested.

It combines dependency data from Zipkin with dependencies defined in YAML to render an interactive architecture diagram with filters: https://demo.kronicle.tech/all-components/dependencies

It uses Zipkin traces to render “call graphs”: https://demo.kronicle.tech/components/kronicle-service/call-graphs

It uses Zipkin traces to calculate response times: https://demo.kronicle.tech/components/kronicle-service/response-times

Kronicle uses Zipkin’s Get Traces API endpoint rather than Zipkin’s Get Dependencies API endpoint, as the data from the Get Traces endpoint is much richer.

There’s more info available on https://kronicle.tech
