I sometimes help friends and family setting up computers & browsers, and it would save a lot of time if I could easily share selected bookmark folders (e.g. travel & shopping websites).
Steve Vandervalk
@stevenvandervalk
Great user focused (client side, hold our own data) idea for bookmarks. I've tried a bunch ie raindrop, stache, pinboard etc. Would love to have a js bookmarklet for easier adding and if you are thinking about it, option to save the bookmarked page content. Thanks.
Osmo Salomaa
@otsaloma
@vapniks There is no particular feature to share folders, but if you know what you are doing, you can export your bookmarks and with a text editor cut that exported file down to a single folder and then have others import that file.
@stevenvandervalk A bookmarklet is planned. Saving page content is unlikely, it's a very different and data-heavy problem.

When searching the web on bort (using ?) are my searches going directly to google, or do they at any time go via bort.io or any part of bort? I.e. are my searches being tracked?
Also, is there any way to run bort locally and not rely on bort.io ?
Osmo Salomaa
@otsaloma
@sammcj Searches are not tracked. It's a direct URL. You should see the evaluated URL, when you hover over the search bookmark. There's no database at all at bort.io, I don't even keep track of who use it.
Sam
@sammcj
Good stuff!
Would like to run it locally, is it open source?
Osmo Salomaa
@otsaloma
@sammcj No it's not possible to run locally. It wouldn't work with file:// URLs, you'd need a localhost server. Not open source either, if it were, there'd also be the trouble of getting your own Dropbox API keys. I think it's just too much trouble to run yourself and makes much more sense as a web application. The hosting should be good though (Amazon S3 + CloudFlare) and downtime hopefully rare.
Dan Farrow
@danfarrow
hi there, Bort looks interesting & usefu1l! Does it support tagging? And if so can it import FF bookmarks with their associated tags?
Dan Farrow
@danfarrow
Aha, I've just installed and I see that indeed it does! But I also see I have way too many tags (1698) for Bort to cope with... and tags don't appear to be searchable :worried:
Immortalin
@Immortalin
Is this open source?
Ignore that question
@otsaloma can you at least open source it?
Or at least the client side js?
Osmo Salomaa
@otsaloma
@danfarrow The user interface is not really designed for a huge amount of bookmarks or tags. https://bort.io/about.html#faq-amount
Osmo Salomaa
@otsaloma
@Immortalin I have no plans to open source Bort at this time. I don't see it being that useful for what is inherently a cloud service (even if the code runs client-side). Regarding freedom, I find it more important to ensure it for data, i.e. that you always know what data is stored and where and can export or destroy it at any time.

Bort.io changed recently, it appears that I cannot get rid of the welcome page even though I am logged in
blob
Osmo Salomaa
@otsaloma
@blanfordrobinson I did a bunch of other changes along with high resolution icons as I needed a lot of time for testing, which I apparently didn't do enough of. You might get stuck with the welcome page if Bort fails to open or initialize the local database. Which browser are you using (see e.g. http://www.whatsmybrowser.org/)? Could you open a JavaScript console, load the page https://bort.io/?debug=1 and copy any possible error messages from the console?
Osmo Salomaa
@otsaloma
In case there's a real problem with the latest changes and it takes a while to fix it, I put a version from January 24th at https://bort.io/old/. It's not permanent, but something you can use for a couple days or weeks and at least export your bookmarks to be safe.
Blanford Robinson
@blanfordrobinson

thanks!
Osmo Salomaa
@otsaloma
@blanfordrobinson Thanks. That screenshot explained it to me and I could reproduce the error. There was a silly bug in the new icon code that assumed HTTP/HTTPS URLs, so if you had e.g. an FTP bookmark, it would fail very spectacularly. I have now fixed the bug and also made the error handling more graceful. So, https://bort.io/ should work again; you might need to hit Ctrl+Shift+R or Ctrl+F5 to force Chrome to bypass its cache and load the latest page from the server.

hello, this is my first time to use gitter so apologies if im showing up strangely. i just wanted to say thanks for bort! this is something i have wanted for years and wondered why so few people cared about it!

i am having a great time cleaning up YEARS of bookmarks in record time, and i dont have to entrust a browser with my hierarchy!

Osmo Salomaa
@otsaloma
@alecgynness Thanks, nice to hear!
alecgynness
@alecgynness
hello osmo, i was wondering if this is an appropriate place to make suggestions or requests?
Osmo Salomaa
@otsaloma
Yes, sure, go ahead!
alecgynness
@alecgynness

so my main recommendation or question is to include some kind of "tagged" "untagged" rule, so that i am able to determine which bookmarks do not have a tag at all. i think you get around this by forcing at least one tag?

but i would also like an autogenerated "ALL" button sort of like "All Mail" in gmail, and an accompanying count of the "ALL" total.

this way I know how many of the bookmarks are essentially unsorted, and need to be either classified or deleted

Osmo Salomaa
@otsaloma
There should already be a special "untagged" tag at the end, to the right of "search". If you add a bookmark with no tags, it will show up there.
An "all" buttons could be added, I guess, I'l keep it in mind. It would probably require preferences dialog entries to enable/disable these built-in buttons to avoid too much clutter.
alecgynness
@alecgynness
aha! well i didnt know that bort already gave me an "untagged" icon, so actually you just "gave" me the feature i wanted!
im far less concerned with the "ALL" tag. i suppose i was pretty good about tagging everything so i didnt have any untagged. i just tested and that works perfectly for me!
Osmo Salomaa
@otsaloma
Yeah, the untagged button is hidden if there are no untagged bookmarks
