    So, is this markdown-supporting chat?
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    yeah cool no?

    @ajfarkas
    hehehe
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    I haven't really tried their integration with specific repositories, but seems like it could be useful.
    AJ Farkas
    @ajfarkas
    I always try to put links into slack, but it prints them literally
    oh yeah, I saw that.
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    Ah, haven't used that one.
    AJ Farkas
    @ajfarkas
    slack is nice because it organizes channels within a team or projct.
    also, custom emoji support.
    priorities.
    well, we're going to have to collaborate on a project, so we can work this out.
    *test this out.
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    ha, that's right.
    AJ Farkas
    @ajfarkas
    Yeah, so I've been doing a lot of D3 and general JS, so a data vis/mapping project would be great. I'm going to OpenVisConf in a month, so I"ll have a lot of ideas to flex.
    Sarah and I also want to do a project on income, housing costs, and building typ (apt/duplex/single-family) in our neighborhood.
    I think the city just implemented some discriminatory parking rules in my neighborhood.
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    That's exciting! Wish I could go to a conference like that. I haven't been doing any d3 since the summer. It's all R programming right now.
    It's even in Boston...
    AJ Farkas
    @ajfarkas
    That's not coincidental...
    It's run by Bocoup and one of Sarah's friends at the Globe.
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    I'm looking at bocoup now, seems like an awesome company
    AJ Farkas
    @ajfarkas
    Man, I wish out data scientist was interested in this kind of conference.
    I just convinced him that Excel won't meet his needs, and he's staring in on R.
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    wat
    AJ Farkas
    @ajfarkas
    Bocoup is amazing.
    I know. You will have massive quals when you apply for wrk.
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    When I have in the past I have tended to feel not very qualed.
    AJ Farkas
    @ajfarkas
    You have all the qualia.
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    Maybe it's an imposter syndrome thing.
    AJ Farkas
    @ajfarkas
    :)
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    One might say I'm a qualia junkie
    AJ Farkas
    @ajfarkas
    on average, dudes apply to jobs when they have 70% of qualifications.
    (women are about 100%, which is one of the hiring problems)
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    Oh yeah, I read that somewhere. Women are much more conservative about estimating their own skills
    AJ Farkas
    @ajfarkas
    The other thing is that you have motivation to do well, and I've been unimpressed by the motivation of a significant portion of people out here.
    (small but significant)
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    really? I'm surprised.
    AJ Farkas
    @ajfarkas
    West Coast is laaaaaaid back.
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    Well I'm thinking hard about next steps, so it would be good to chat with you about that soon. I have to decide about the PhD program by April 15.
    AJ Farkas
    @ajfarkas
    My friend Jack is about to take a 3 month sabbatical from Google because he's been stressed.
    ok, yeah. I'm free this evening and tomorrow.
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    Cool. Let's shoot for tomorrow.
    AJ Farkas
    @ajfarkas
    great. I will put it on my calendar.
    AJ Farkas
    @ajfarkas
    Let me know what time you want to talk this evening.

    In one of your posts I noticed that you used to keep your notes stored in github. Do you still do this? If not, how do you store them now? Do you ever take notes in rstudio? thanks.
    Nicholas Potter
    @potterzot
    @hearsay____twitter Apologies for not checking this in... over a year(!) These days I take notes in markdown files, usually written either in Rstudio or in the atom text editor. The notes for a given project are in the project repo and since they are written in markdown are rendered nicely, and include checkboxes and all the usual fun github+markdown things.
