Going afk for the day
Dani Arribas-Bel
@darribas
yes, I get a similar behaviour
which I wouldn't expect
OK I'm out for the day on these matters too, but planning on blocking a few hours on Friday
Levi John Wolf
@ljwolf
all PySAL GSOC mentors, to reiterate: we'll have a call at 4PM UTC today to discuss advisement & coordination on student advisement.
let's keep discussion here rather than in email so that students are in the loop, too.
Stefanie Lumnitz
@slumnitz
Is the meeting via hangouts from the calendar? :)
Levi John Wolf
@ljwolf
the "GSOC Calls" event in the shared calendar should have a meet.jit.si/pysal-devs
Stefanie Lumnitz
@slumnitz
awesome, thank’s for sharing! I am looking forward to it!!
James Gaboardi
@jGaboardi
Is the a room for the spopt sprint?
Levi John Wolf
@ljwolf
James Gaboardi
@jGaboardi
and/or is that still happening now?
Levi John Wolf
@ljwolf
yes
hey @slumnitz you coming?
Levi John Wolf
@ljwolf
https://hackmd.io/dzfJGS4VTYCvNx3t8CzEBA for notes on our GSOC organizing call
main takeaways are:
  1. each project mentor set should update/craft "getting started" documentation for students
  2. Make a tag for every PR/issue relevant to a GSOC project so that it's easy to assess at the end of the summer.
  3. start a GSOC_{project} channel on gitter where the development of each project can coordinate separately from the main channel (in case this gets too noisy :)
  4. coordinate every other week w/ all projects and separately in the off-weeks with your own project.
To that end, we'd like to have a first call w/ GSOC students next week! Friday, may 15th at 4PM UTC
@jeffcsauer, @pabloestradac, @MgeeeeK if that works for y'all, let us know!
Mragank Shekhar
@MgeeeeK
:thumbsup: , 15th at 4PM UTC is good for me.
jeffcsauer
@jeffcsauer
Works for me! :thumbsup:

@ljwolf
Ace folks!
Pablo Estrada
@pabloestradac
Works for me too 👍🏼

@sjsrey
For anyone interested in contributing to spopt, we setup a project for the december release target. For the region component, the current phase is to pysal/spopt#33, with a deadline of June 23. Please jump into that thread if interested in shaping this cycle.
Dani Arribas-Bel
@darribas
Should we think of something for this?
Dani Arribas-Bel
@darribas
hello does anyone have any idea whether I can get a geopackage/shapefile with all tracts in the US? Or, for that matter, some easy to access of that size more or less (in the order of tens of thousands). Easy is better than complete for this task

@knaaptime
i have states, counties, msas, tracts, and blocks for the whole country saved as parquet files in the spatialucr quilt bucked
easiest way to work with them is geosnap ;)
jeffcsauer
@jeffcsauer
Oh nice! Much easier than rebuilding them :thumbsup:

@ljwolf

it was nice to meet you all... regarding project specific meeting I don't have any issues with the current meeting schedule (will have my dinner little early in future lol). also, as mentioned should i create a new gitter channel related to the project rn?
Dani Arribas-Bel
@darribas
FYI I'm gonna be working for an hour or so on the performance improvements for the local esda
Dani Arribas-Bel
@darribas
@MgeeeeK nice to meet you too! Yes please, go ahead an set up a public gitter room for the rasters project and let @slumnitz and I in so we can start planning Friday's chat :)

@TaylorOshan
@jeffcsauer @pabloestradac Are their links for today’s meeting? Will they be at the usual time?
jeffcsauer
@jeffcsauer
Were going to use meet.jit.si? I can also set up a recurring Zoom. Any preference?
James Gaboardi
@jGaboardi
@sjsrey @xf37 I had thought there was a touchbase for spopt on the calendar today. Did this change or did I imagine it was planned in the first place?
Levi John Wolf
@ljwolf
Hey Jeff, for the friday meetings, let's use zoom & just keep it ad hoc?
if it helps to set up a recurring zoom call & share the details in the project rooms, that works for me
whoops, @jeffcsauer
jeffcsauer
@jeffcsauer
soudns good! we can run with the ad hoc, i'll send it in there closer to the meeting time
Charles-Yuan
@Charles-Yuan
hi everyone, thank you for all of your effort to develop this amazing package! I am a new beginner to study pysal and I just want to know does pysal has a Spatial Durbin Model (SDM), I search in the document but can't find that. Thanks!
Sergio Rey
@sjsrey
@jGaboardi yes, that was the plan, but my schedule got derailed so friday became blocked
Pedro Amaral
@pedrovma

@Charles-Yuan you can easily run a SDM in PySAL by using whatever method in the spatial lag family (eg. GM_Lag, GM_Lag_regimes, etc.) and including a spatial lag of the X as regressors in addition to the X itself. It's just a single line of code using the function lag_spatial from PySAL's weights module. You can find more help here: https://pysal.org/libpysal/generated/libpysal.weights.lag_spatial.html

Something like this (assuming you already have everything else loaded):

from libpysal.weights import lag_spatial
x2 = numpy.hstack((x,lag_spatial(w,x)))
Charles-Yuan
@Charles-Yuan
Thank you my friend, you did help me a lot! @pedrovma

@jGaboardi
Following the decision for all submodules to follow standardized docstrings, I created this project board in pysal/pysal (which can be further fleshed out). I am setting aside time this coming Saturday (2020-05-30) from 12:00pm Eastern (9:00am Pacific) to sprint on this, and I have added it to the calendar (Standardize Docstrings Sprint).
