I have qownnotes on 3 different computers. I was thinking it would be nice to be able to apply particular tags to all newly created notes relative to which machine I'm creating them on. Just thinking out loud; no worries.

[telegram] <Constance> I am trying to write a script for macOS that starts a python process with some arguments but I can only get it to start the executable and not pass anything. Grateful for any ideas?

import QtQml 2.0
import QOwnNotesTypes 1.0
QtObject {
function init() {
script.registerCustomAction("pyhton","python")
}
function customActionInvoked(identifier) {
switch(identifier) {
case "python":
var note = script.currentNote();
var filepath = note.fullNoteFilePath;
var py_proc = "/usr/bin/python3";
var py_script = "/scripts/qnotes.py"
script.startDetachedProcess(detached_proc,[pyscript]);
}

[telegram] <Sander> Hi @patbek do you experience flickering/jumping in the preview panel when editing? I assume it's quite difficult to mitigate this, but maybe it's possible to create a debounce setting. Meaning: only update the preview panel after 500/1000 ms of no interaction. Or: have the preview panel only update on a shortcut (e.g. Ctrl-S).
QOwnNotes Bot
@qownnotes:matrix.org
[m]
[telegram] <patbek> I don't know if I have seen a flickering. the preview only updates if anything in the note changed and the scroll position will also be updated. maybe there is something special with your panel layout? best open an issue... [telegram] <tg_bart> Now that we are on the topic of the preview panel, does anyone know if there is a way to prevent the position update? I am editing a PlantUML diagram, and it jumps to the text to that I don't see the diagram anymore.

[telegram] <Sander> Well.. this is one of the flickering/jumping scenario's that I mean.

I don't think it has to do with panel layout, but with contents - if there is an image involved (or a diagram apparently) it seems that the rendering inserts the image every time again, making the contents of the panel 'jump' (re @tg_bart: Now that we are on the topic of the preview panel, does anyone know if there is a way to prevent the position update? [telegram] <patbek> I can't reproduce that. Strange... (re @tg_bart: The middle * gets superscripted for some reason.)

[telegram] <patbek> Exactly, I guess the script re-generates the image. (re @Sander: Well.. this is one of the flickering/jumping scenario's that I mean.

[telegram] <Marco> I agree. If you have a font with ligatures, it's done on purpose.
Try !== or >= and if you'll see, say, ≥ means that you have a font with ligatures. (re @tg_bart: I think it may be my font. 😂)
[telegram] <Marco> Seems like you're using fira code or something similar.

[telegram] <Sander> A 'diff' update would be too complicated I guess? Would it be possible to pre-render the preview somehow without updating the view - hiding the 'jumping'? (re @patbek: Exactly, I guess the script re-generates the image.)
[telegram] <Sander> Or otherwise create an setting to debounce the update of the preview panel and/or have a shortcut to update?
QOwnNotes Bot
@qownnotes:matrix.org

[telegram] <patbek> The script could do that I guess. (re @Sander: A 'diff' update would be too complicated I guess? Would it be possible to pre-render the preview somehow without updating the view - hiding the 'jumping'?)

[telegram] <Sander> What script are we talking about? The diagram script?

What I mean with diff update is that QON only replaces the characters that were modified/added, so no complete rerender, no jumping.

[telegram] <Sander> Is there a way to delay the update of the view, waiting till the image/diagrams are done rendering?
[telegram] <Sander> Or otherwise debounce updates after editing - maybe in general a measure that will benefit performance
QOwnNotes Bot
@qownnotes:matrix.org
[m]
[telegram] <patbek> not that I'm aware of (re @Sander: Is there a way to delay the update of the view, waiting till the image/diagrams are done rendering?)
[telegram] <patbek> but is it always desired to not update the preview while typing? I guess the jumping mainly comes from the inability to determine the position in the preview to jump to precisely... I assume as long that isn't possible there always will be some kind of jumping... (re @Sander: Or otherwise debounce updates after editing - maybe in general a measure that will benefit performance)

[telegram] <Sander> I'm not sure. Maybe you can temp disable code that tries to change the scroll position of thr preview panel and see if it is less jumpy? Or would always the top of the contents be displayed in this case?
[telegram] <Sander> Debounce would update the preview and ideally skip all the renders after each keystroke except for the last (after eg 500ms of no edit). I'm sure you know the concept from angular forms / rxjs. (re @patbek: but is it always desired to not update the preview while typing? [telegram] <Sander> Result is less processing and a less jumpy UI

[telegram] <patbek> Then the prview scroll position will not change when loading a or typing in a note.. I'm not sure if that would be better. 😅 (re @Sander: I'm not sure. [telegram] <patbek> Hm... I like that in search fields...when you stop typing after a short amount of time... but I don't think I have seen that in html textareas... [telegram] <RonBillock> I am pretty new to QOwnNotes. I have loaded all my notes into the App. Seems to be all in 'default'. Is there a tutorial or something on how to use this App? Specifically i am looking for a better way to manage my long list of notes by grouping them into related folders. I did create another Folder but I don't see it anywhere or how to put notes into it for better sorting.
[telegram] <patbek> Hi. 😁 Die you enable note-subfolders for your note folder in the note folder settings? Then you should see a panel for note-subfolders. Of course you can also just move them in a file manager... (re @RonBillock: I am pretty new to QOwnNotes. I have loaded all my notes into the App. Seems to be all in 'default'.
