I'm curious what yarn brings to the table that regular npm couldn't do.

heard good things though
I think newer versions of npm are close enough(tm)
installing a package manager from the package manager was a little too meta for me without a pressing need

:joy:
As far as I know, npm 5 pretty much copied what yarn had against npm. (lock file, faster downloads, better caching, etc.)
Which made me wonder why yarn still exists/what it's remaining selling points are.

locking deps of deps by default and being slightly faster still
or so I've heard
does the package lock in npm handle deps of deps? I haven't looked at it much because I'm super picky about what kinds of deps I let in
an eslint change did bite me a week or five ago with ractive though

yep, lockfiles work well in npm 5. It recently broke in 6 tho :joy: npm/npm#20434
Found that issue the hard way, and broke 3 separate projects.

that's rough
I still don't know what happened with the npm registry yesterday
unkpg managed to get the builds, because I checked an issue after I pushed the fix, but today everything was broken
of course, I also vividly remember when npm would just be straight up unavailable for hours at a time, back in the good old days
one of the reasons I was hesitant to do browserify-style stuff
