Nicholas Tierney

Hi There! Does anyone know how I could go about extending the header of my website whilst keeping the main body of text below it the same width?
Currently I control the width by setting body width here
but I'm sure that there is a better way

@yihui
Whenever you want to control anything on a page, first you must be be able to select it easily. The most common way is to put it in an HTML tag/container and assign a class. Then define CSS for the tag or class.
Nicholas Tierney
@njtierney
OK sure, I guess I see two obvious options here
  1. Add a class within the header.html inside the <body> tag
  1. Make a class that gets used for everything underneath the header

perhaps this is a bit of a simple question, but how do I best go about getting my current blog, njtierney.com to now be njtierney-test.netlify.com

@yihui
No, that post won't answer your question. See my example: https://github.com/rbind/yihui/blob/master/static/_redirects#L8-L9
I think you want to redirect njtierney-test.netlify.com to njtierney.com instead of the other way around.
@/all Anybody can help him? rbind/support#40 I'm very busy these days, and don't have the time to ask him for detailed info.
Nicholas Tierney
@njtierney
ahhh
OK, so I'm actually not sure what that entails
image.png
Would it mean that I change a CNAME to have on the left, njt.netlify.com and njtierney.com on the right?
Yihui Xie
@yihui
No, your current settings seem to be correct. I misunderstood your question. I thought you wanted to redirect *.netlify.com to njtierney.com.
For example, people can access your website through http://njt-test.netlify.com but you probably do not want them to use this subdomain.
BTW, you should enable HTTPS on Netlify.

I transferred my blog repo to rbind at https://github.com/rbind/blog.jemu.name and now I don't have a settings button anymore, is that… intended?
Eric Nantz
@rpodcast
@jemus42 I made you the admin of your repository so that should enable you to view the settings

Wonderful, thanks :)

hello everyone
I've deployed my blog with netlify; I must say I'm impressed
it's really easy
however I'm not sure I've done the right steps to use my own domain
I own www.brodrigues.co, registrar gandi.net
I enabled the custom domain on netlify
and then pointed the domain to the nameservers that I was given
is that enough?
Bruno Rodrigues
@b-rodrigues
yep, seems like it's enough
just had to wait
Yihui Xie
@yihui
That is right. You always have to wait when making DNS or nameserver changes.

Hello. I'm not sure if this question is best here or as an issue (I opened it as #195). Yesterday I made a changes to my website (https://ellakaye.rbind.io) and appear to have successfully pushed it to GitHub, but the change hasn't deployed to the website. It shows up fine when I serve the site in Rstudio, just not online. I've cleared my caches and tried in a couple of different browsers. I haven't had issues with this before, and I'm not aware of having changed anything in the setup. Does anyone have any ideas what might be going on and how to fix it? Thanks!

Hello everyone! Great community, I read issue #195 @EllaKaye and it solved my issue as well, so thanks. My question: Has anyone customized ghostwriter? I have it up and running, but have no css experience and would like to customize a few things. Any help appreciated. Cheers, and thank you.
Liechi Zhang
@liechi

Hi, there, may I ask a help related to the deployment of my website(/Users/administrator/Documents/liechi) from repo(https://github.com/rbind/liechi).

I wrote a blog in RStudio and using blogdown and pushed it to my above mentioned repo for autopublishing through netlify. But the email from netify said that my recent builds had failed. I checked the repo, and found the blog was pushed to the folder under the repo correctly.

The error message said:

failed during stage 'preparing repo': git ref refs/heads/master does not exist

I checked my .git files and I could see the "HEAD" there.

I checked the deploy logs and found this:

2:20:36 PM: Build ready to start
2:20:37 PM: build-image version: 42bca793ccd33055023c56c4ca8510463a56d317
2:20:37 PM: buildbot version: 15854c92f1b74f9c77ad951b5536193c76eff25e
2:20:37 PM: Fetching cached dependencies
2:20:38 PM: Failed to fetch cache, continuing with build
2:20:38 PM: Starting to prepare the repo for build
2:20:38 PM: git ref refs/heads/master does not exist or you do not have permission
2:20:38 PM: Failing build: Failed to prepare repo
2:20:38 PM: failed during stage 'preparing repo': git ref refs/heads/master does not exist
2:20:38 PM: Finished processing build request in 774.672806ms

I used hugo 0.19 to build my site before. When I found this building failure, I updated the hugo to 0.50, because some google search suggested the older version of hugo was not supported.
But it did not solve the problem. It has been quite a while since the last time I wrote blogs, so maybe something has changed? Is there any idea?

BTW, I did not use hashtags in my posts, so the issue seemed to be different from that of issue #195.

Liechi Zhang
@liechi
The local serving of my site in RStudio is OK, the problem only happened in the deployment through netilify.
Yihui Xie
@yihui
@liechi I just reconnected your Github repo and site to Netlify. I don't know why this is necessary (something in Netlify's authentication might be wrong) but your site seems to be working now.

Hi there, I'm considering joining rbind and would like to request an invitation for my blog at https://github.com/matdoering/data-blog which is hosted at datascienceblog.net. I'm not sure if this is the right channel for asking for the transfer permission but I couldn't find another contact ... :-)
Yihui Xie
@yihui
@matdoering I've sent you an invite.

@yihui Thanks for the invite.! I've just done the transfer :-)
