Hi, Bro!
please what's that product ancestor field in the product collection?
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 04:09
this defines the relationship between parent products and variants
samgitre
@samgitre
Nov 08 2016 04:37
ok
samgitre
@samgitre
Nov 08 2016 04:45
for example i fetched products to array and I'm customizing the display such as item.title, item.price, ete. now which of the attribute that will give the productImage is it item.ancestors?
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 04:53
product image is not in the Products collection, it’s in the Media collection
There is already a global subscription to Media so you just need to find the image(s) that match the product Id

@samgitre

I see, thanks.

You’ll want to query on the productId property in the metadata
Media is a special type of collection based on CollectionFS
but simply you’ll want to use the url property on the objects returned from the query

Hey guys I have a question about the search functionality on the site.. I have set some tags for my product and I am not able to search by them? I was hoping to add catagories to my products, how would I make the products searchable by the tags?
or add catagories?
Ivanthadev
@ivanthemeh
Nov 08 2016 17:03
I guess what I need to know is whats the easiest way, without messing up future updates, to add a new field to the product item?
or set it up so that products can be searched by tags? Please.

Is there a UI for undeleting tags?
{ "_id" : "n8GHe3DgMbajgbySc", "name" : "Kids", "slug" : "kids", "isTopLevel" : false, "updatedAt" : ISODate("2016-11-08T16:12:01.771Z"), "createdAt" : ISODate("2016-11-08T16:12:01.798Z"), "isDeleted" : true, "shopId" : "J8Bhq3uTtdgwZx3rz” }
Was trying to figure out why certain tags/categories were not showing up using the /tags/:tagroute and after digging into the db, it appears that they have an isDeleted flag set to true
using the mongo shell works, but curious if there’s a better way
Scratch that, undeleting via mongo shell does not seem to work

Running into this issue on a fresh ubuntu t2.micro box on AWS - I've run through the install many times and everytime I get to this point and it just hangs:
`Using settings file at settings/dev.settings.json

Setting up plugin imports...

[[[[[ ~/reaction ]]]]]

=> Started proxy.
=> Started MongoDB.`

any idea what is going on?
Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 21:23
t2.micro is too small.
Carlos
@Losakoa
Nov 08 2016 21:23
i've installed NPM, Nodejs, and meteor in every combination possible but I keep running up to this point.
is it the instance size thats messing it up?
Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 21:26
It’d probably be fine for running the app (just barely), but it’s likely your issue if you’re trying to build the app there. If you really want to use a server that small, my recommendation is to build a Docker container locally, push to Docker Hub, then run it on the server.
Carlos
@Losakoa
Nov 08 2016 21:26
that's what I plan on doing
I want to get something up and running to mess around with.
I'm just wondering why I've gotten it to work in the past
but suddenly the build doesn't wwant to work :(
Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 21:27
Is there a reason you’re trying to do it on a remote server instead of your local machine?

Nov 08 2016 21:33
The reaction-cli loads plugins, etc. It’s not an optional step.
Again, run it locally and save yourself the headache of trying to develop on budget servers. Reaction development is supported on every major platform. There’s nothing wrong with deploying on those servers, but you’re working harder than you need to by trying to develop with no CPU/RAM resources.
Carlos

Figured out the tags issue
turns out our PDP ui doesn’t have support for revisions built in, but any product modifications are still being set as “revisions"
so adding/removing tags to products are visible on “admin” but invisible to normals
if I remove revisions package will that break things?
Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 21:55
that’s probably a @mikemurray question
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 21:55
it shouldn’t
what may happen is that it switched back to the old PDP but it shouldn't
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 21:56
@zenweasel should removing the revisions package make changes to products visible to all users?
We’re not using the new PDP anyway
(custom)
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel

Nov 08 2016 22:02
Tertiary question, we’re seeing pretty long load times on initial app load (/) is that likely due to the amount of code/plugins and because Meteor doesn’t lazy load anything or because of unoptimized subscriptions such as Media trying to globally subscribe to images etc
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:02
Yes
Spencer Norman
@spencern

Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 22:06
ad blocker or ghostery?
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:06
blocked by client is usually a plugin thing
also, looks like we need to i18n our browser policy
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:07
Yeah, adblock in chrome
I have been thinking about how we might optimize the media subscription
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:08
yeah, me too
that’s our biggest sub on home
along with Packages
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:09
you should just get images for whatever you subscribe to for Products
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:09
we have 0 Products and 319 Media on our root
Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 22:09
template/component level subs feels like the answer there.
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:10
according to Meteor DevTools that is
Media is the only one that feels off
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:10
well, it still needs to subscribe to only the Products that are visible
so moving it to the template level would only solve half the problem
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:11
Packages: 41
Translations: 2
Products: 0
Tags: 58
cfs.Media.filerecord: 319
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:11
or actually just move the problem to a different place
yup
Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 22:11
well, that’d be most of it… if the template level is the individual product
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:11
no, you still needs Products at the grid
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:11
yeah, the tags/collection page needs to subscribe to some
but not ALL
Mike Murray
@mikemurray
Nov 08 2016 22:11
Or store files outside the datsbase
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:11
yeah
Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 22:11
YES
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:12
would looove to move to S3
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:12
well yeah
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:12
but don’t have time to build that integration
:/
yet
@mikemurray with the real solution
Mike Murray
@mikemurray
Nov 08 2016 22:12
CFS does S3
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:12
would it be a relatively simple switch?
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:12
I am also thinking it’s the same logic for Inventory
Nope
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:12
I might look into that tonight if it’s already built and just needs a UI and a little code
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:13
It’s probably simple except for the fact that it’s a lot of places
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:13
319 image urls would be a hell of a lot lighter download than 319 binary blobs
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:13
it’s actually 319 x 4
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:13
actually x 7 for us
:(
added addl photo sizes
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:13
yeah, super :worried:
so yeah, downloading 2233 images on the first load could be a problem
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:14
damn, actually x8
:cry:
Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 22:14
nah… should be fine. :)
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:15
I’m no performance tuning genius but…..
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:15
size:72289
yeah, this is probably a bigger problem than I realized
definitely didn’t know it was downloading all sizes of each image
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:16
good broadband papers over some pretty terrible issues
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:16
yeah, I need to throttle my dev machine more often
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:16
I mean, if it was downloading those images async, then awesome
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:17
even then not awesome
but better than blocking
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:18
I think scaling down the size of the Media subscription is pretty doable. I think @mikemurray had some ideas on how to handle that
obviously remove the global subscription, move it into the grid/PDP
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:19
yeah, shouldn’t be too tough. We’ve done that with a few other subs
will need it in some way on
  • Cart
  • Grid
  • PDP
  • checkout
  • completed
  • backend/admin (though I don’t really care if it loads everything here)
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:21
yeah, it’s something that’s not necessarily complex, but it just touches a lot of places
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:21
yeah, I think it’s probably worth it for us at this point
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:21
I think we have a ticket for it
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:21
I can try to push it back to dev as well
I think we’re close enough in codebase that it shouldn’t be much extra work at this point
though what I really want is S3 + cloudfront
so I might explore that too
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel

Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 22:23

Nov 08 2016 22:24

Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 22:24

This is great… https://github.com/VeliovGroup/Meteor-Files
But… Meteor.

Nov 08 2016 22:25
Hey guys, anyone available to help me figure out how to add catagories to my products or make the products searchable by tags please?
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:25
yeah..
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:25
@ivanthemeh the search API already supports searching by tags
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:25
If it’s much work to port to CFS S3 it seems like it’d be better to just port to separate npm package
Ivanthadev
@ivanthemeh
Nov 08 2016 22:25
@zenweasel I added some new tags to my product and tried to search by the tags and its not working
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:26
but tough to force S3 as some people may want to use local/db storage?
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:26
@ivanthemeh the UI does not support it out of the box, you need to add that
Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 22:26
yeah, there’s not a one-size-fits-all solution for binary assets.
Ivanthadev
@ivanthemeh
Nov 08 2016 22:26
@zenweasel I suck at react can you help me figure out how to do that?
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:27
You don’t need to port CFS to S3, there is just an optional add-on
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:27
I know
Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 22:27
Wordpress may make that easy, but I’d argue that their solution is pretty awful too.
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:27
but I’d have to port Reaction to using CFS-S3
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:27
?
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:27
is that much easier than I’m making it seem

Nov 08 2016 22:28
well since I’ve never done it, let me shut up before I mouth off too much

@Losakoa
Nov 08 2016 22:28
admin login information when reaction starts initially is located in what file?
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:28
I know that CFS is unsupported and that currently Reaction only supports GridFS
lol @zenweasel
Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 22:28
I personally wouldn’t put any work into CFS at this point. It’s literally abandoned. (unless you wanted to take it over)
Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 22:29
but I also realize that may be less work than starting over.
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:29
yeah, our ticket is “Replace or Maintain"
Carlos
@Losakoa
Nov 08 2016 22:29
thanks, I know that, but was wondering if it's in a file somewhere after the fact so I can edit it if need be.
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:30
You can put it in your settings.json or in environment variables
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:30
mainly don’t want to take over maintenence of that b/c Meteor
Jeremy Shimko
@jshimko
Nov 08 2016 22:30
since we’re definitely heading in the direction of native Node/npm, my feeling has been that we should use/develop something that would work with any Node app. That feels much safer
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 22:30
would rather just move to npm based solution
Carlos
@Losakoa

so is the product tag search section not enabled by default? I found a file for the template productSearchTags.

I think that just loads all products with a specific tag
e.g. the /tags/:tagroute

@ivanthemeh correct, sorry you want to actually text search for a tag?
then you would need to add that as well
you could extend the current search-mongo package to do that
you could just use a Mongo query and skip the search indexing

@ivanthemeh

@zenweasel yeah thats what Im trying to setup
@zenweasel any way you can give me a hand or point me in the right direction? like what file to edit?
Brent Hoover

Just add a getResults.tags here
the publication takes “collection” as the first argument

@zenweasel I have no Idea how to make that work, Im fairly new to js and this is confusing the crap out of me. :cry:
Brent Hoover

Ok, well I would suggest first starting here: https://guide.meteor.com/collections.html
getResults is an object that has a property where each property is a function
Ivanthadev
@ivanthemeh
Nov 08 2016 22:48
@zenweasel could I just add the tags field to the list of fields in getResults.products?
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 22:49
so it would look something like
getResults.tags = function (searchTerm, facets, maxResults, userId) {
const tagResults = Tags.find(
name: { $regex: searchTerm, options: “i” }
};
return tagResults
}
on the backend, you only need to add that function
I didn’t test that, so it may not cut and paste but you get the idea
just do a mongo query by regex by the searchTerm

so anyway, changing the global Media subscription is the more future-proof solution for now
Spencer Norman
@spencern
Nov 08 2016 23:12
yeah, that’s step one for sure
longer term will be looking for a static solution
Brent Hoover
@zenweasel
Nov 08 2016 23:12
I think you can just wait for us to fix that
Ivanthadev
@ivanthemeh
Nov 08 2016 23:12
@zenweasel I got the function in without errors but its not searching by the tags still. >.<

@ivanthemeh You then need to do the search on the front-end and display the results
Look in the ui-seach package and you should be able to just pull similar pieces

@ivanthemeh
Nov 08 2016 23:16
@zenweasel ok thanks

I just gotta look at the code more.
