Relax-and-Recover - Linux bare metal disaster recovery and system migration solution (cfr. mksysb, ignite)
what is the recommended schedule for the full backup?
Hello again folks!
I have now another issue, after I made a backup, I tried to boot the generated .iso file on a VM, but it stuck during boot time
it looks like a kernel panic during boot time, after the line child_rip+0x0/0x20 nothing happened
this is only a POC, I'm recovering from a Linux Red Hat 6.5 on a PC Dell OptiPlex 3020 to a VirtualBox VM, I know it a drastically hardware change and maybe this is why I'm getting the error.

is it recommended to use BLOCKCLONE_PROG when dealing with a large amount of files? I have a server with 200GB small mail files that I imagine would take a long time to mkbackup of when using tar.
@ledj_twitter are you really using BACKUP=BLOCKCLONE ? Because BLOCKCLONE_PROG is relevant ONLY for this backup method ...
Lars E. D. Jensen
@gozora yes I'm aware, but I'm asking if using BLOCKCLONE and _PROG (dd in my case) are recommended over tar when 200 GB small files are on a partition?
@ledj_twitter if you are using BLOCKCLONE with dd it doesn't really matter how much files you have on your filesystem, because dd will clone your whole partition / disk ...
Lars E. D. Jensen
@gozora I imagine that, but doing a tar or rsync on 200 GB small files would take a long time, so BLOCKCLONE seems the way to go
Hi, I need some help with ReaR, when working with VM it works just fine but when I use it for physical systems backup and recovery the backup is successfully taken but when I write the ISO to the pendrive and boot from it, the system instead boots from the harddrive not the pendrive
Can someone help me with it ? not able to boot a physical system from the backup iso config: OUTPUT=ISO BACKUP_URL=file:///rear_backup
Hello All.. new to ReaR and this chat ... I'm trying to install on SLE-15, but the rpm seems to have a dependency of genisoimage, which isn't part of SLE-15. Instead the OS provides mkisofs, but I can't get around the genisoimage dependency.
found a work around for SLE-15 ... version 2.3 is included in the High Availability Extensions module
I installed REAR on Peppermint Linux and it did got error on install, no icon and could not run. So tried to uninstall and got error. Tried to uninstall with the sudo command and it would not, so I have a failed install that I can not uninstall. Would not uninstall from Software Manager either. What is a fullproof way to uninstall it?
@mystic1muse_twitter as peppermint is based on Debian you could try to remove rear from the command line 'apt-get remove -y rear'
"Frequentally asked questions" should read "Frequently Asked Questions"
not sure where to report that but thought I'd report here
as an FYI.. I tried to use REAR for the purposes of backing up instances, a DR, in Oracle Cloud.. I successfully created ISO etc.. but Oracle Cloud doesn't really have any way to boot an ISO.. from everything I've read it only does boot volume backups, and block device images.. with the ability to have custom images (qcow2 and vmdk supported only).. really bad in my opinion as REAR is quite good.. but unfortunately I can't really find any way to make it work with Oracle Cloud instances..
How does rear handle backing up a linux box that is running as a KVM host? So multiple VM's are running while the backup kicks off?
is there a checklist for things to check when you get errors that nothing is mounted on /mnt/local?
what would cause fs lines to be missing in the layout? partitions are there, but root filesystem is not recreated
@Biggen_PCB_twitter Hi. I have the same question too. Have you ever tired backing up a system while it is running huge MySQL/PGSGL databases? I wanted to know that if it could handle and guarantee the safety of open files while they are running...
@amiirrmm Yes, that's possible. Just make sure that you backup a snapshot of the data directory (e.g. /var/lib/postgresql) and not the live datadir. I use LVM snapshots for that purpose.
Does anyone have an idea why booting the ISO doesn't get me an IP address on the recovery system through DHCP? Remapping network interface worked but DHCP fails.
I have a weird issue. I made a backup of a machine, and the diskrecover.sh is empty/default, i made a backup of an almost identical machine and it is able to recover just fine. I noticed that the boot isos for the pair of machines differ by almost 40mb, they are basically clones of each other so im not sure why the difference. Any help in pointing me to the right place to look for errors is appreciated.
Trying to recover a machine - i get disk configuration looks identical / Start system layout restoration / Disk layout created / ERROR: No filesystem mounted on '/mnt/local'. Stopping
Good day, everyone! Tell me, can I find out in advance what will be the weight of my .iso system image? To eliminate the lack of space.
can somehow emulate the backup process in order to know in advance how much space the iso file will weigh?
Good day! Can ReaR backup folder structure of mount point without files in folders?
Hello All, I have three installations of Ubuntu 16.04.5 LTS and only one of them shows rear available for installation in APT. And the one installation that it does show, only has version 2.00 available. Any ideas?
Hi guys, one stupid question but, i am able to recover my system to /mnt/local but what next. Documentation states that after reboot VM will be fine. But FileSystem mounted from /mnt/local isnt copied to /. How can i achieve this? Thnx
Hello All, I have trouble recovering an Ubuntu 18.04 backup to a smaller disk on a different hardware. The original system is on a RAID (3TB) and the restore system is just a single drive 2(TB). The Backup is just 70GB. But recover complains that the last partition has to be shrunk more than 2%. How can I address that?
Hi All, been testing ReaR for about a week now, I notice incremental backups doesn't work when BACKUP_URL=file:/// (in my case to an FSTAB mount), but when BACKUP_URL=CIFS:// works just fine, is this a known limitation?
In case someone else has the same question rear/rear#1146 I guess BACKUP_URL=file:/// is the same as USB
Does anyone know if Relax-And-Recover will work under LinuxMint 17.1 ?
would anyone know if possible or how to backup mount point? like a mounted nas
Have a couple suggestions for the next REAR release: would like to see if the "lsblk" command could be added to the rear recovery; also can we get UDF, NFS, and USB_STORAGE modules loaded automatically? Currently I have to make sure I modprobe them before making a backup as well as having to add lsblk to /usr/bin in order to see if my USB device mountable, and in order to add the file, I have to mount a cdrom using modprobe udf. One last request is to see if ntfs-3g can be added as well, this would help to read a DVD that was created in Windows.
An additional request; I would also like the ISO image to be created during a backup using OUTPUT=USB... (just incase I would need to create a bootable CD to do a recovery). Right now I can either have the ISO created as part of the backup, or have a bootable USB device, but not both.
I would like to add /usr/bin/ntfs-3g to my mkrescue image... how do I add that to the local.conf file so I can ntfs-3g mount my external hard drive?
Never mind all my questions above; I have figured it out on my own. I now can make a USB device, with ISO included in the backup, and can mount my "windows" external hard drive using ntfs-3g during rear recovery.
Hi I'm facing one issue while restoring the backup
chroot : failed to run command '/bin/bash' : no such file directory
