And then once the shared knowledge fossilizes, the web app becomes restricted by the limitations we discover in fully exploring it.
Thus a new framework is born.
And the circle of life continues.
Jeff Escalante
@jescalan
i guess what bothers me is that all of the knowledge is centered around engineering for web apps
yet most of the internet is not a web app
and when we encounter non web app projects, we tend to just take tools for making web apps and throw them at it
this tendency makes me wonder how much traction a proposal like this, which doesn't really have a ton of use for building web apps, but would be useful for other types of sites, would get
Jonathan Neal
@jonathantneal

we tend to just take tools for making web apps and throw them at it

Yes. And that is hard.

What would you call the part of the web that is not web apps?
Jeff Escalante
@jescalan
unless they are trying to use it as a polymer-like type of import thing, as a part of a system for building web apps
i usually split into 2 categories
Jeff Escalante
@jescalan
content sites (blog, news, etc), and marketing sites (information)
Jeff Escalante
@jescalan
i kind of have the feeling, looking through this, that they just want to use this instead of imports for polymer
since imports didn't pick up any steam
Jonathan Neal
@jonathantneal
Imports are dead. Polymer is dropping them, AFAIK.
Jeff Escalante
@jescalan
ah that confirms it then
a lot of web standards stuff is driven by polymer
however, polymer is 💩
unfortunately
yeah, all the people in this thread are polymer people
or skatejs
both of which are web component frameworks that are not really ready for prime time
this response says a lot too

The "try it yourself" section is broken on this page
It is identified as XSS attack and blocked by my browser plugin
It is not an iframe
in fact, the entire html page is injected to my page
Well you can just write a runkit notebook and publish it

Hey does anyone know if Reshape supports nested layouts? I have a repeating section which has a lot of boilerplate and i want to use it inside a child page. Something like:
<extends src='layout.html'>
<block name='content'>
<section class="work-experience-area">
<h2 class='label'>Work Experience</h2>
<extends src='_resume_incumbency.html'>
<block name='title-area-content'>Software Developer IV</block>
</extends>
</section>
</block>
</extends>
Thank you!
Jeff Escalante
@jescalan
a lot of people have reported issues with nesting layouts
i haven't yet run into a situation where i used them, on anything
and i make a lot of pretty complex sites
typically using includes or components is a better solution
zwerdlds
@zwerdlds
Thanks, Jeff. From what I've seen, includes can't contain blocks for variable content, I tried looking but I can't find a good starting point for the example I gave. Do you have a good article to start with?
Jeff Escalante
@jescalan
could you use an include instead?
zwerdlds
@zwerdlds
Yeah, I think that's what I'll do.
Thanks for your help, and thanks for the project!
Jeff Escalante
@jescalan
you got it!

I’ve updated Reshape Hfill to support transforming contextual headings (<h>) into HTML5 compatible headings (<h1> - <h6>) https://github.com/jonathantneal/reshape-hfill/

@msssk
does anyone have advice for using components with reshape?
I'm probably on my way to using SkateJS, but in the meantime trying to get a little more mileage out of somewhat plain HTML templates
I've extended reshape-include to provide somewhat more configurable component-like includes:
https://github.com/mkdecisiondev/reshape-component
but I'm wondering if a better approach exists
